It was a very impressive throw, nonetheless. A throw that only a literal God could have pulled off. The even bigger feat is that Ares was able to accurately hit Kratos while he was in Pandoras Temple, which was being moved around by Chronos. The Temple has a large open area at the front, and that was the side facing Ares when he threw the column.

When Kratos entered the portal to the Desert, Athens was gone, nowhere to be seen. Gaia says the Desert is beyond the World of Man. Kratos himself in the novelization, upon going through the Oracles Portal, noted that he felt never so alone in his life and wondered whether he was tricked and cursed into a Tartarus-like fate by the Oracle, wandering around forever. Thats the vision from GoW 1, whatever retcons there were from Valhalla are irrelevant.
