  • There’s a lot of controversy in the Church right now about issues concerning marriage and sexuality. Underlying these issues though is a deeper issue: Do we really believe that Sacred Scripture is the inspired, inerrant Word of God? In this video Ralph explains how the Church has always approached Sacred Scripture, including in its teachings on this in Vatican II. He explains why we’re foolish not to take the revealed Word of God with utmost seriousness. If we did, this would clarify a lot of the confusion and misguided efforts to accommodate our teachings to the corrupt contemporary culture.

I am a lifelong Catholic who , before I was 40, didn’t read the Bible much and just depended on what I heard in Mass. Once I started reading the Bible daily (now in my 50s) it provided a whole new level of understanding of the underpinnings of our beliefs and the power of the Sacraments.

We cannot know Jesus and His saving plan for each of us unless we accept that scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error. It is the Word of God!

The Eucharistic apparition in knock Ireland
Portrays the message even in its silence of the importance of sacred scripture with the Eucharist

    Excellent teaching once again!!!!
So reassuring is the reliable word of God.
It’s so ridiculous that some in the hierarchy are fighting against the Lord himself when they try to accommodate modern behavior which is basically the same old sins from ages past.

Thank you - the "Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture" series is wonderful; far better than the "Sacra Pagina" series from a few years ago, which were very uneven in spite of their scholarly erudition, and which were also, sadly, laced with modernism. These are my "go-to" commentaries now, together with the Navarre Bible commentaries, which are also excellent. I am pleased to hear that they are working on some of the Old Testament books now.

Sometimes, during the current pontificate, I wonder if those in charge really believe the basic truths found in Scripture about faith and morality. My thinking is based on the behavior and the break with the previous teaching that has stood the test of time and developed over the past 2000 years.

Germany is where Protestantism started. We have to be careful to interpret Scripture in line with Church teaching (the catechism.)

I have two books of the commentary series and "coincidentally", they're the same ones as shown, Mark's gospel and Revelation. They're really good.

Ralph, could you talk sometime about Tradition? A well-meaning protestant Christian friend once said to me, “The Jews have the Talmud, Muslims have Tafsir and Catholics have Tradition.” Could you- providing it’s agreeable to the Lord- explain what Tradition really is?

Hi Patricia! Thank you for your desire to learn more about this. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines Sacred Tradition this way, "The living transmission of the message of the Gospel in the Church. The oral preaching of the Apostles, and the written message of salvation under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (Bible), are conserved and handed on as the deposit of faith through the apostolic succession in the Church. Both the living Tradition and the written Scriptures have their common source in the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. The theological, liturgical, disciplinary, and devotional traditions of the local churches both contain and can be distinguished from this apostolic Tradition." You can learn more from the Catechism, paragraphs 75-83, or in the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, "Dei Verbum" (www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_const_19651118_dei-verbum_en.html). We also recommend the extensive library of articles available at www.catholic.com. Here is a link to just one that you may find helpful: www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/sacred-scripture-depends-on-sacred-tradition. God bless you!

    Thank you Dr. Martin.
Saint Paul told the Galatians Chapter 5:19-24 "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury, 20 Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects, 21 Envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, 23 Mildness, faith, modesty, continence, chastity. Against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified their flesh, with the vices and concupiscences."

Can there be traditions outside of apostolic tradition?

It seems to me that since God is outside of time, He, like the author of a novel, is capable of seeing all events at the same time. All moments in time are for Him equally present, in what I refer to as the Eternal Now. In the Eternal Now, God could have chosen to become incarnate at any moment in history. Yet He chose to do so to a young woman, betrothed to another in a country, ruled by a foreign authority. He chose to come at a time when gender roles were clear. He chose to come when the King could demand total allegiance from his subjects. “My body, my choice” would have no meaning at such a time. In Psalm 24 the psalmist, speaking for God, proclaims “the earth is the Lord and all that is in it.” This includes the individual. These ideas are difficult for the modern mind to accept. God could have chosen to become incarnate in this moment in history had He thought they better reflected what he wanted us to know.

The Word, The Way,The Truth and The Light of God, Jesus and The Holy Spirit has been and is being distorted and twisted in order to make it inevitable that humanity chooses to become antichrist and reject Jesus, to disobey God and to do our own will and not that of God's will in our daily lives. God pour out your mercy on the world you created and on your children strengthen us for the final battle ahead.
