When I was in Normandy last May, it had a most profound effect on me. Knowing the history thoroughly, I found myself very emotional picturing what those brave men had to endure. And then the cemeteries and the rows of crosses. When you see pictures or videos you don’t always grasp the scope or the depth that each one of those crosses was a young brave man who died defending the values of our western society. And to see those crosses in the tens of thousands…I even get choked up thinking about it now. I pray we keep out port in Le Havre, for anyone who hasn’t been to Normandy 🙏

If you haven't seen the movie The Longest Day, I highly recommend it for a very good depiction of the tragedy that D-Day was for the Allies. It's being shown on Turner Classic Movies on D-Day. Also, Saving Private Ryan.

On many trips to Le Harve, I cannot get myself to go to the beaches. On one trip, I met a man whose father was killed on D-Day and he was going to a ceremony on Juno; met him later and he told me the French gave him a plaque and played Taps, broke my heart…

@@user-iv5lo8qx4i yes definitely. We planned a trip to Normandy a couple of years ago using the movie “The longest day” as well as getting a copy of the Michelin road map of Normandy from Amazon from 1947 which was made back then for returning servicemen who wanted to go back and explore. It shows a lot of details that are worth checking out.

The only perk Connie & I care about is the free laundry. We have that on Princess since we became Elite, and now on Holland America since Connie is over 200 nights (4 star). The minibar setup is nice, but not really something we care that much about. It seems the daily snacks they have for Elite on Princess is timed poorly for us (too close to dinner, etc.) so we rarely use that. We're unlikely to try and get to an equivalent loyalty level on any other cruise line. Frankly, we may never cruise on another cruise line since we're in our 70s, Connie has rheumatoid arthritis, and we already are booked up well into 2026. Well, maybe we'll try Viking or Oceania, but we certainly wouldn't try to get status on those lines. Right now we're cruising a lot while our health and our minds are still good. There will be a time when it's time to stop traveling and just enjoy each other's company, and that's ok too.
    Steve

My uncle lead a platoon on D Day. Everyone in his platoon was killed. He was seriously injured and crawled to all his men to see if any were alive. Then he was rescued and spent several months in the hospital. Then they sent him back to the front line. An absolute war hero. He died about 7 years ago at 97 years old and someone came to his funeral from the government to tell us what a war hero he was. He never really talked about it. I am going to go there next year just so I can walk where he walked and pray for all the young men who lost their lives for many people’s freedom. God bless America and our servicemen.

Carnival has the best comedy shows. They have the Punchliner Comedy Club with the best comedians. No other cruise line does comedy better than Carnival.

Carnival is fun. It is economical. They have the best casual included food at sea. They have the best comedy. And there is zero stuffiness on it. Most families with kids would be happy there. I don't necessarily think it is for the over 60 crowd, having said that, we, me 60 hubby 73 went on a 6 day cruise in January having not gone on Carnival in awhile! We stayed in the family harbor and you could saunter in down to a private area and get coffee, juice whatever at you private breakfast. We have an aft balcony and it was quiet. You can't take Carnival if you have a "fancy" mindset. It is for fun!!!!

Have not been on Princess but when you first started out with number of days, my mind jumped to comparing it with Elite (200 days) on Celebrity. Would have never thought to compare with Zenith since the number of days is not even comparable.

Princess should add a few tiers to their loyalty program . I think I’m approaching 35 cruises with them, so more than 2 times Elite. I’ve done way more Holland America cruises and just became 5 star about a year ago.

We are Elite with Princess and our upcoming cruises this fall will be our 28th, 29th and 30th cruise. We have done a lot of cruise tours with Princess, but the land portion did not count toward our reaching Elite. We started cruising with Princess in 1997 doing a cruise tour to Alaska. The land tour portion was 10 days in Alaska and Canada to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Gold Rush and the cruise was only 4 days. Later we went back to Alaska on another cruise tour that went to a couple of different places on the land portion and we got to go to the ports we missed before on the cruise portion. Your information on cruises to Alaska going to other cruise ports might make me want to return to Alaska rather than just visiting the same ports again. Our upcoming cruises will be on the New Sun Princess.

I so appreciate the choices Princess makes with comedians that give a clean comedy show and are funny.
Comedian AJ Jamal was hilarious! We laughed the entire time of his show. We look forward to seeing his show on another Princess sailing.
Comedian Gary Delana was so funny. He kept us laughing the entire show. We look forward to seeing a future show by him.

As an experienced RC cruiser, I follow this closely. With the RC group status match implementation, there are exclusions for some of the upper tiers. If RC status matches Celebrity Zenith, they are excluded from the free cruise and entering the retreat area unless they have a retreat cabin. So, some of the better perks still need to be earned in their respective programs. There was a FAQ put out on May 30th that addressed these areas. Just an FYI.

Hi Allison, great topic about loyalty. We have our 20th cruise coming up and it will be our 10th on Princess. Although my wife and I enjoy the small perks we get at our level we continue to book Princess because we like the cruise line the most. If they give us mini bar and laundry in another 5 cruises well extra bonus for us.

Very first cruise in 1996 (greater than 15 now) was on the Carnival Elation. Mexican Riviera which we loved. However, was subtly disappointed in the Carnival experience. It's supposed to be the "party cruise," right? Yet we didn't have a fun "party" experience on that sailing. But after more cruising, I developed a perspective. Carnival "party" ships aren't going to turn a person into a party person if that's not their personality in the first place. Now we are content for more low key-- a la Princess and NCL.

Hi Allison - so to be clear, Carnival Cruise Line Corporation does not offer loyalty match across their Lines. For example, as Elite on Princess I cannot share that same status on a Carnival Ship. Thanks for your content as always.

Hi Allison. We have sailed on Celebrity since 2006. We started in Balcony and decided to go with suites. That helped us achieve our goal of Elite Plus status. Yes, we did show our loyalty with Princess and achieved Elite with them. I see more perks with Celebrity than Princess and will watch for how they match with RCL. Thanks for sharing all this valuable information so when we choose our next cruise, we will listen to you.

We took our first cruise in 2009 and it was on a Carnival ship. We chose Carnival for the price and itinerary. I have now cruised with Carnival 15 times, Royal 4 times and Princess once (to Alaska). We usually take our kids with us (ages 9-21) so Carnival offers enjoyable experiences for all of us. I enjoy the Serenity Deck and the thermal spa. My kids love the kids/teen activities. We all enjoy the shows, entertainment and trivia. We all appreciate the included food options - Guy’s Burgers, Shaq’s Chicken, etc. My next 3 cruises are booked with Princess. We really enjoyed our Alaska cruise with Princess and want to experience the Caribbean with Princess. We will still sail Carnival’s newer ships as well. We don’t care for Royal Caribbean; I don’t plan to sail with them again.

Loyalty is for friends and family not cruise lines. This is the world today and I'm fine with that. We have now sailed 7 cruise lines (8 if you count Margaritaville) and are happy to pick the best for us each time. We do have favorites but not out of loyalty or to try and climb the loyalty ladder.

  • @hettytravels
    @hettytravels Місяць тому

You hit the nail on the head about the loyalty program and exactly what I’ve been thinking about the last few weeks. I’ve been working hard in reaching the upper levels for both Princess and Holland America Line. Although I like the idea that I could match with another cruise line, I’m still struggling with the fact that someone could come to Holland America, for example, as a five-star mariner and not have done the work so to speak. Now granted, they did do the work on their cruise line of course. I’m not sure there’s a simple answer. In regards to Normandy, I certainly hope we can go there on the 19th. I’ve been to Margraten Cemetery in the Netherlands. Indeed, as Carey said, rows and rows of crosses marking the graves of our young soldiers. It is so moving.

I don't really like Carnival because they're more of a party ship. I do sell with other carnival corporation companies because they sell from Southampton all year round, so just P&O UK Princess and Cunard. And if they did the same with P&O Cruises UK with the ships they have, it would be a better fit to move to Princess as they have mainly Grand-class ship and . Royal-class cruise ship

On the way to the beaches at Normandy, it amazed and touched me to see U.S. flags in the windows of many small private homes. Americans often hear how the French think so little of us. Apparently, not all. Some French citizens whose family homes were close to the front do remember when our young men/boys answered the call to help.

Remember that the original people of Normandy were Vikings. (North man=Nor Man) They have a different culture from the rest of France and certain personal traits you don’t see elsewhere in today’s France. Modern English is rooted much in the old French of the North Men (Normands) who invaded England in 1066.

Loyalty was already being matched between Royal caribbean and Celebrity. This change just added Regent to the match. I think it is a more to try and get Celebrity cruisers who are less happy with dropping gratuities from their package to stay in the family rather than trying Princess or HAL.

I have cruised Carnival twice. It was not my favorite at all. I think their reputation as a party/fun ship helps to draw people, especially families with children and young adults. Also, they seem to offer lower pricing by steering to nonrefundable fares. As for loyalty, Princess offers double cruise credits for solo cruisers, which I very much appreciate. I admit to taking some shorter cruises this year as someone at my shared table on my January cruise suggested it would be good to be Elite before I go on my two longer cruises next year (totaling 45 days). I am now one cruise away and doing that one in September. As for shared loyalty across the brands, I can see both sides. I have only been sailing with Holland American for 7 months, so to have the Princess loyalty spill over would be nice, but I have worked really hard to get to Elite on Princess, and it does kind of feel bad if someone else got it for nothing.

I feel really bad for the people who won’t be able to go to Normandy. This might have been there only chance to go there. I understand, that though it would have been especially memorable, this is really not the best time of year to expect for it to really happen. I hope everyone affected can go again, or even better, get to take a land tour of the area. I would dearly love that.

We found the comedians on Carnival did not offer a funny clean comedy show. Most of them just had conversions with the audience, making fun of some, pitting the races against each other. Princess comedians have a higher caliber of material.

I’m of the belief that the loyalty should be kept separate on Carnival. Different clientele between the cruise lines and different prices paid to accomplish loyalty.
