It has officially been pointed out about 100 times in the comments that the wires are the lines from the barrels, which is actually pretty awesome and some great attention to detail on the movie’s part.

@@colindanger3396 According to Erik Hollander, director of the documentary "The Shark is Still Working," the crouching figure is that of Roy Scheider. In the film he's standing behind the pulpit as Quint talks but, while shooting Quint's speech, he crouched down to cue Robert Shaw when it was time to start talking. I don't know why Roy volunteered himself for this but since Erik and Roy worked together on The Shark is Still Working documentary, I assume the information is from Roy himself.

Quint smashes the radio because he's facing off against both his past and the present. He's afraid of the shark, but he remembers what it was like to be defenseless in the water with one, and he's not backing down while he thinks he still has the upper hand. He's not waiting for someone to come save him again. But as the shark defeats him at every turn, his fear begins to overtake him. When he tries to run away from the shark, he panics and burns up the motor sealing his fate.

I think it was better than the book in some spots, and it really had what the movie had but more and the only thing people bring up when hating it (apart from the affair) was the way less climatic death of the shark. Which much I remind you was an amazing ending which I enjoyed with that huge drop in tension as it disappeared and how it just floats down into the depths with quints body going down after it. All I can really say is, the book started the film and a book doesn’t need an exploding shark because it’s a book. It’s all
About story and description. It would be so unrealistic for such an accurate thriller to just have the shark explode or get its head sliced clean off at the end. Because books are built on the foundation of story and not practical effects.

Scuba diver here and I can shed some light on the exploding tank. From the invention of scuba until the 1970s, all tanks were made of steel. They were tough as nails - case in point, my dad still wns six tanks from the era in working order. But in the 70s they started making them out of aluminum because they could be made lighter, cheaper and easier to maintain than steel. In an effort to minimize cost as much as possible, the alloy used for tanks made by U.S. Divers (which is the brand shown on the tanks in the movie) contained lead. Under normal circumstances this would be a non-issue, but a number of tanks were manufactured that had a defect: during the pouring of the liquid alloy into the tank molds the softer lead would "pool" into one area of a tank and create a weak spot which would expand and contract over time as the tank was used and refilled, stored in a nn-climate controlled shed or garage, etc. And eventually, that weak spot would no longer be able to hold the pressure in and the tank would rupture quite violently. Modern aluminum tanks (those made since the 90s) use a different alloy process which omits the soft lead entirely and thus any attempt to get a modern tank to explode in that manner will fail. Even if you had a tank from the time period there is no guarantee that you would be able to find one with the flaw, much less know where exactly the flaw would have settle on the tank to be able to target and blow it up. Tanks did randomly rupture in the 70s and 80s and there were injuries and deaths because of it, but it wasn't known why for over a decade so the overall attitude was "aluminum tanks can just explode for no reason", which kept a lot of divers using their old steel tanks due to not trusting the newer tanks.
Also, a final note: you cannot scuba dive with pure oxygen below 45 feet (give or take). The reason is called "oxygen toxicity" - if you breathe nothing but pure oxygen at a pressure of greater than 1 atmosphere, it tends to concentrate rather than disperse which can cause far too many problems to list here. Jacques Cousteau, the inventor of the scuba system, experimented with oxygen in his early days as a researcher but twice nearly died. For any sort of real diving you need to used normal compressed air containing a mixture of gasses. I have rarely seen a non-scuba diver actually know any of that, though - everyone I speak to who doesn't dive just assumes it's oxygen in the tank.

    • @plan9fromsyracuse
      @plan9fromsyracuse 2 роки тому

      Great analysis.
I'm going to tackle the exploding tank issue soon and this was one of the details I needed. Excellent info.
Also, in the 70s, divers were experimenting with mixed gas diving to stay down longer.
What Hopper was using was a mixture called Nitrox...nitrogen and oxygen and it was extremely volatile. The extra nitrogen, would decrease the level of oxygen in the air mixture to allow a diver to go super deep and for longer periods and not feel the effects of oxygen toxicity.
Modern day deep sea divers use HeliOx, a mixture of helium and oxygen, to lower the oxygen level and go deep.
Take an old aluminium tank, load it with Nitrox gas mixture and shoot it with an M1. There will be an explosion.
The mythbusters never were divers from that era so they wouldn't know.

Here's another: Why do Brody and Hooper not mention finding Ben Gardner's body when they are arguing with Mayor Vaughn the next morning, instead of just talking about the tooth Hooper dropped? Answer: Because the moment with Gardner's head popping out was added at the last minute during post-production, after all the other scenes had been filmed. It's such a great scare that you can forgive that it creates a plot hole.

I watched Jaws last year on the big screen and it was awesome!! Pandemic forced some theaters in Texas to show oldies but goodies and this was one I saw! Yes Texas was open all along, ;) ....I personally think she was not having flashbacks at all, but it was a "synchrony" and bridging the events on her family. I did like the idea of a psychic connection to the shark. This movie portrayed it as an embodiment of some demon or other paranormal entity and I see how the plot of Voodoo could have come into play.
On Jake's final scenes, I remember he died when I watched it as a kid in the 80s but then vaguely remember watching him survive later in years so I assumed I had simply forgotten he survived all along.

Shooting stars can occur in the daytime you know? We just can't see them because...well, we aren't looking at them through filters like the camera was when shooting day for night. It was probably an effect, but at least rely on the animators saying it was, and not the day for night stuff. Also in the book, it wasn't the wounds that killed the shark, it drowned from the barrels, it eventually tired it couldn't pull against them and couldn't get water through it's gills and died inches from Brody.

I think a more reasonable explanation for #12 would be that it wasn't a memory or recollection from Ellen. It was more then likely just a trope the director used to call back and show similarity and symmetry between the ending of '75 and the ending of The Revenge. A final nail in the coffin and a fan service piece to come full circle.

I love how Jaws is so obviously incorrect about sharks. I love the idea of a great white who thinks and hunts its victims. The fact of shark can have Revenge Vendetta is a smart and interesting idea for its time. At least it's more creative than Sharknado series. I just love the suspense and unknowing of who would be the unknowing victim on First Watch. Even on my probably 100 watch, I still enjoy the Jaws series. I always make it a challenge to binge watch the whole marathon of movies. I have yet to be disappointed by the movies. Although the more I watch them, I have noticed unanswered questions and plot holes , but I guess that's par for the course, the more you watch something repeatedly.

#2 - Years ago, I asked this on a Jaws message board somewhere. People pretty much told me that the "It's happened before" comment by Meadows was regarding swimmers getting run over by boats. The points you make have me wondering again.
#4 - Personally, I thought the night scene on the Orca was supposed to be a night sky lit up by an off-camera full moon.
#5 - I think Quint's smashing the radio has more than one reason. I think it's a combination of pride (wanting to be the one to get the claim to fame of saving the town), greed (not wanting to split the bounty with anybody else), and personal revenge (the great white is much bigger than the shark jaws in his home, and killing it would be like going after the granddaddy of his past traumas from the Indianapolis).
#6 - I think the shark came up at the Orca like it did at the end to attack this thing that was tormenting him with shooting barrels into him and chasing after him, refusing to leave him on. The wires that you referred to were the lines for the barrels that were shot into his back. Having those attached like that would probably send the shark into a fury, causing it to lash out at the closest thing, which was the Orca.
#7 - There were no flames, indicating that it wasn't flammable in them like oxygen. While it was most likely not possible, perhaps he hit the tank in such a manner that caused the tank structure to fail?
#8 - I think the shark in Jaws 2 was simply another great white. In the novel, there were seals around Amity, which are a popular food for great whites in California and south Africa. Another possibility is in a "Jaws 5" script that somebody posted part of online years ago, and that is that Amity Island was on a migratory path that great whites used.
#9 - Mayor Vaughn was well involved in the real estate development on the island. The disaster of the Fourth of July in the first movie probably got downplayed that they believed that the tiger shark that was caught was the culprit and that the nightmare was over. One scene that I wish would have gotten left in Jaws 2 (it's in the deleted scenes on the DVD as well as put back in for the ABC airing of the movie) was when the town council goes into Vaughn's office and votes to fire Brody. Everybody but Vaughn raises their hands. When asked if anybody opposes, Vaughn raised his hand, indicating that while he felt Brody was overreacting, he knew what had happened before when he should have listened to Brody.
#11 - I think the shark was passing through Amity (if I want to really put any thought into a movie that shouldn't have been). After the attack on Sean (I think it was attracted to the noise of the dock piling hung up on the buoy, and when it investigated, it saw the police boat as another "animal" moving in on potential prey), it continued on its way heading south, getting a few days head start on the Brody family. I think the fact that it ended up in the Bahamas at the same time was just coincidence. I don't think the shark was "stalking" the Brody family or set a trap for Sean. As for the roaring shark and its exploding in the dumb reshot ending, I'm biting my tongue on the poor movie making.
#12 - It's possible that Martin could have vividly described the killing of the sharks, and that was what Ellen was remembering. Again, that's if you really want to put any thought into that movie. As for seeing Sean killed, she probably played out what she imagined happened in her head after the attack, which is what she was "remembering". For the attack on Thea, she was on the beach, but rather than reshoot the attack from the beach, they just replayed the attack from earlier.
#13 - Reshooting the ending was the dumbest part of the movie, even dumber than Hoagie getting out of the water with a dry shirt. I saw the impalement version in the theater and when the movie aired on FOX. I heard about the altered ending, and when I saw it, all I could do was laugh at how bad it was. As far as the change with Jake surviving, I think it was dumb. He was getting crushed in the shark's mouth and would have been bleeding profusely from the teeth going into him.

Something else that isn't often mentioned wrt the air tank in Jaws 1 is that it (magically?) makes around a 100 degree turn inside Bruce's mouth. Brody shoves the tank inside the shark with the bottom away from him and it winds-up jammed diagonally in its mouth, but that wouldn't present the chief with something flat to hit with his rifle and also probably wouldn't have been ideal cinematically.
The shark jumping into the air is a pretty common hunting tactic and is called breaching. Whales also do it. They can get their entire body out of the water, so Bruce's final attack on the Orca is highly plausible.
Quint smashed the radio because he wanted the prize of the kill for himself and wanted a sort of revenge on the sharks that attacked the crew of the doomed Indianapolis. The money was a distant second. And he DID want to kill it and was NOT trying to commit suicide, as he tries to drown the shark in the shallows, but the Orca's engine fail due to being immersed in seawater long before the boat gets there. He also relents to Hooper's plan to inject the shark with some concoction that'll kill it.
The shark in III is actually much larger/longer than Bruce at 35 feet. I kinda like III, as it has a "lightness" to it and the score by Alan Parker is remarkably good and thematic. Plus, it's fun seeing Dennis Quaid high on nose candy during almost all of his scenes.
I really don't get people complaining about Ellen's "remote viewing" flashback in Revenge. It's obviously just a dramatic sequence solely for the audience's benefit as a visual callback. It's not suppose to be psychic voodoo. And I doubt Martin would've been announcing how he killed the shark to anyone within shouting distance, as that doesn't fit his character.
Mayor Vaughn was reelected since the shark WAS located and destroyed during his tenure, so it was a clear socioeconomic win for the town. Hell, he probably ran unopposed.

The shark exploded in the Revenge because that tracker had radioactive material, the impact of the boat triggered the chain reaction of the radioactive material causing the explosion, of course… 😂
