  • Today in the Great Lakes Kitchen we've got an awesome new toy to play with. This massive flat top griddle is made to setup on an ordinary 30" gas stove, and provides an absolutely sprawling cooking surface for frying up all manner of things.
    In this video I will go through a full unboxing and setup, and I'll try the thing out by frying up a whole bunch of bacon. Then I'll share my impressions with a "pros/cons" breakdown.

    So, I got one of these as well but I got the one that's made for my outdoor gas grill. Fits over the grill grates and has more grease holes that cover the width of the griddle. Mess outside is a different clean up as well so although I really think that you will find that not everything is a messy mess, I'm super happy with the outdoor version I got. There are some things like fried rice and breakfast (eggs and pancakes) and quesadilla etc. that are awesome on these griddles. Happy cooking my friend and thanks for the video.

      Same here. I had mine custom made and it nearly covers my six-burner Weber. I had the drain holes all aligned on one side and leave that burner off, so that the custom drip pan does not sit over a lit burner. My only beef is that it is heavy to take on and off - sure glad I did not get the thicker “pro” version. Fried rice, cheesesteaks, a dozen pancakes at once - lotta fun.

    I got one and fired it up last Saturday. I have a similar stove (Maytag). Burners except the front were about medium. Mine is pre-seasoned. When my olive oil coated meat hit that flat top, all Hell broke loose. My entire house filled with smoke in seconds. The fire alarm went off and the fire department was dispatched. Took me two hours to vent the house - though believe it or not - my food came out OK. Keep the flames low and for high temp cooking, use Avocado oil for the higher smoke point. Will definitely call my alarm company before I light this thing off again so I don't have the fire department over for dinner.

    I wish I had a gas range for this product. Unfortunately, I have the ceramic range and I am getting one of these! I can wait to try it out!

    The majority of te cooking I do is with my wok for Asian stir fry’s. The best cooking surface is high carbon steel of which your grill is made. My wok is about 10 ears old and wonderfully seasoned. After cleaning with only water and a chain type cleaning pad I dry, heat and oil the wok after use. This method will season your wok/griddle to cook like it was a Teflon surface. Seasoning is very important for steel cook tops.

    If the upper part of the range had that much splattered grease, how did the wall behind that area look afterwards? That's a lot of greasy mess, Great Lakes, so I'm not going to be putting this on my Christmas list. But . . . you did a great review of the product, and that is most appreciated. Merry Christmas, Great Lakes, and a happy and healthy 2022. God bless!

    If you don't cook on that high of a temperature it won't splatter that much

    • @z3char1ah
      @z3char1ah Рік тому +2

      Agreed. Temp is too hot for bacon, also flinging the bacon around with tongs will cause splatter too lol.

    Recommendation: A simple solution would be to build your own side and back wall “back splash” buy purchasing 6” or larger aluminum or galvanized roll flashing cut to length for the splash sides and back, flatten as best you could an bend 90° at each corner.

    you scrape the crumbles with the 2 spatulas to remove them ...not to shove them into the drain.

    You said ''STAINLESS STEEL''. It is only steel. @ 9:13.

    Great video! I'd be interested in a follow-up video if you've used it since. How was the mess when you aren't cooking a ton of bacon? I'm very interested in this product, but something that causes that big of a mess will have me in the doghouse, lol.

      I've used it a bunch of times since, and it's definitely not as messy with much of the stuff I've cooked. I love it for taco night because I can crisp up my carnitas, saute some onions, and heat the tortillas all at the same time. Stuff like Philly cheesesteaks is great. Eggs, hash browns, etc. Just the really fatty meats like bacon and hamburger are going to be the most splattery. But, I just have to accept that some cleanup is inevitable with those foods. All in all, I'm a big fan of it.

    THE REASON YOU HAD EXCESSIVE SPLATTER IS FROM INSUFFICIENT VENTILATION, OVER THE RANGE MICROWAVES DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH CFM's TO GET RID OF THE GREASY AIR THAT A GRIDDLE CREAT

    I like the idea, but I still rather just use my cast iron pan and a splatter screen.
    If I used/bought this, I would never take it off the stove.
    I doubt that I buy it, but I certainly would buy the Pro Version if I did.

    Can you fire up the burners on one side, all the while, leaving the other side cold? Does anyone know the difference in the cooking characteristics of the pro Vs std model?

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  7 місяців тому +1

      I've read that heating it un-evenly could eventually result in some level of warping, but I've done it anyway. So far there hasn't been any problems. Of course, the other side will still get rather warm even if the burners directly under it are off.

    Is there a cast iron version in this size?

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  7 місяців тому +1

      Not that I know of. It would weigh a ton, and there wouldn't really be any benefit to it that you don't get with the carbon steel one.

    the mess is just too much for me to cook bacon or anything like it indoors. i always grill in my garage for that reason

    • @scooter5940
      @scooter5940 Рік тому

      Me too. I have a griddle that fits on my outdoor gas grill. If I do make bacon inside, I cook it in a griddle pan, at least. The higher walls knock down some of the spatter.

    Can you boil water on it in a pot?

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  2 роки тому +1

      You can, but it can take a little longer. Partcly because the heat is distributed over a larger area before being directed into the pot, and partly because the heat is generally turned to full blast under the flat top (like it probably would be under a pot of water). They also make a half-sized flat top in case you still want to have burners available for pots/pans.

    Way too much oil to season properly. Several thin layers would be much better. Bacon is also not a good idea for the first cook. Do some research

    • @GreatLakesPrepping
      @GreatLakesPrepping  Рік тому +8

      The company that makes these griddles specifically recommends using bacon. It seems reasonable to follow the manufacturer's recommendation.

      You can use bacon, but I think you used way too much bacon :) ... You probably only need a half a pound at most.
      I enjoyed your review though... thanks!@@GreatLakesPrepping
