Fred Gwynne really committed to playing the part of Herman Munster - a bumbling, goofy, cheerful, lighthearted monster. People have tried to emulate his performance in remakes over the years, but there is no comparison.
I haven't watched the Muensters in decades. But I realize now what a good actor Fred Gwynne was and what he brought to the part by giving the monster his childlike personality. He really did an outstanding job. Without him, this show would have never taken off.
My mom watched the Addams Family more than Munsters. I've watched more Munsters than Addams Family. Of course I wasn't born yet when they were on tv in the 60s.
Al Lewis was an avid cycling fan. One night, after I had an incredible night on the track, Al, along with his wife, and another couple, invited me to a late dinner with them. It was wonderful. He talked about all the great races he saw at Madison Square Gardens, when he was a young man. Very nice man.
I agree with you 100%. I was born in 1978 and I grew up watching TV shows from the 60s. The Munsters is my absolute favorite of all. ❤❤ I love Yvonne de Carlo, Al Lewis & Fred Gwynne dearly. ❤❤
Watching these episodes as a kid was my favorite. Now I'm showing them to my son and he can't get enough of them. 😄👍 I wish they still made shows like this.
I agree with you The Munsters was beautifully written . I have a beautiful Model of the Munsters Koach & a book about The Munsters that Yvonne and Butch Patrick did
I just love Lilies overcoat. So much thoughtful detail went into every aspect of the scene. It's more than just a script. Watch the body language of the other actors when one of them is speaking. They were so good because they reacted so realistically and naturally. The timing has to be perfect for it to go off flawlessly.
Watching The Munsters today for the first time in January-2022, not sure how I missed. It's a brilliant show compared to what we are watching on television nowadays. Such genuine and engaging performance and a routine life. Feels like a breath of fresh-air. Fine job done by Fred Gwynne !
Kevin Miller yes I know that another great show. I didn't get to see these shows on till the Late 70s early 80s we only had 3 channels on TV 📺 back then.
The Munsters has been one of my favorite shows for 6 yrs. I love Lily's outfit & cape. I was her for Halloween in 2014. Yvonne De Carlo was a good actress.
A lesson for all families; sadly lacking in many TV shows today. The only problem with the Munsters is that they look so weird! But that is what makes the situations with the Munsters so funny.
If you know anything about the show, the writers were trying to teach a bit of a lesson but on the sly. This was the time period where neighborhoods were being integrated, mostly with black families. This series and the way people treat the Munster family is meant to draw a parallel with how non whites were treated in the mid 1960's. There is even one episode where the mailman and the next door neighbor are speaking and she says something along the line of she doesn't want to see any more of 'them' moving into the neighborhood. They ARE a nice family. They just look different is all!
1986 my first time visiting the United States of America... and the very first show on television was..The Munsters..!!! I didn’t understand that much, but I fell instantly in love with Herman!!! What nice memory’s!!! Thanks America for all those wonderful Shows
Grandpa: "Herman, will you please stop pounding those stakes into the ground! You know it gives me heartburn!" Herman: "Sorry, Grandpa." Hilarious comedy!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
His fishing cast always reminded me of my cousin fishing. He would always have these extremely long casts and mine seemed to go about 10ft and plunk right in front of me .
Herman pounds a stake to set up the tent and Grandpa grabs his heart like Fred Sanford, ( Never pound stakes when I'm around you know it gives me heartburn) Classic! Lol!
The munsters is one of the absolute best tv shows in history for several valid reasons AND its a goth must have experience, this show so heavily influenced goth culture.
Best Episodes Herman Becomes a Beatnik & When he Becomes a Pop Star.. the Hip Bone's Connected to the Leg Bone. Da Do Do Duty Do Do Do.. Herman is So Funny When he thinks he's Cool.
Growing up as a kid, I wanted the Munsters as my family because they were all so sweet. That's why I didn't care for the Addams Family. They were sinister. Plus Lilly's hot in a wholesome way.
@LisaK71000 Never watched the Addams Family because the Munsters were just a bit more wholesome as a family. And Herman's sweet innocence could be so funny.
Fun fact 2 Herman or Fred retired to thurmont MD 15 miles away from where I live in Taneytown MD it's something locals used to be proud of being he lived a town over
I watched this great sitcom, after I got home from school🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!! Herman and Grandpa were totally the best ever!!!!! These old great show's should be on TV again!!!!!! 🥀🥀🥀🥀.. 2022....
When I get skunked on a fishing trip I laugh and say to myself I'm having chicken for dinner again tonight - Herman tosses a 1000 foot case and comes up with a roasted hen.. LOL !
I read somewhere that the difference between the two families is that the Addams family were wealthy upper class American patricians in the country for generations. Gomez was a lawyer by profession after all. There are references in episodes where people like Uncle Fester allude to things being beneath the family dignity. Whereas the Munsters more represented immigrant blue collar families. Herman was 'made' in Germany and worked in a funeral parlor and both Grandpa and Lily were born in Transylvania. Which is why they always make reference to 'the old country' and try so hard to be the 'typical average American family' as Lily and Herman so often said.
I liked Adams family Both of the 🎥 movies,(Adams family Values/Adams Family),growing up but older I get more I enjoy the Goofy light hearted 😂 humor of the Munsters 🧟🧛🦹🚗more.
I loved building models as a kid. Working on models waiting for my favorite Saturday night shows. Munsters and Lost in Space. I had the Munsters coach car model.
Well, when you think about the fact that he was made and not born and he did not grow up normally and learn so many of life's lessons, it kind of fits that he would be vulnerable. Just like the actual Frankenstein monster if you read the books or saw the James Whale movies.
You're lucky dude! Back around 1990/91 I actually went to his restaurant in Greenwich Village in New York City hoping to see him but he wasn't there that night! Man was I disappointed!
I'm watching The Munsters for the first time at the moment and I love it! Also did anyone notice Eddie didn't have his pointy ears in his first scene of this episode?
Yes he did. Its just that the pointy part was somewhat obstructed by his hair when he talks to Herman. Look at around :32 when he runs into the room. You can see he has the pointed ears.
"I guess we could put up with a few days of fresh air...for Eddie's sake." GOLD!
The humor on this show was so clever.
One of my favorite late night shows. Fred Gwynne gave me so many laughs as a child. How can anyone not love that signature Herman laugh and smile?
Yoo Hoo I'm home !!
he is very good

Watched has a child .can't remember if I laughed. I am now.
Not just child like but also authoritative when he needs to be. Especially with our gentle giant's voice being informed by one of Mr. Gwynne's aunts.
Munsters is one of the greatest TV shows in history.
Yes it is, i love the opening of The second season of The Munsters , the music on the second season is the best ever.
Munsters & I Love Lucy
Grandpa used to sit us down and we all would just watch it. Loved it
haaa had one season with very good ratings the next season in the toilet then canceled far from the greatest haa 2 season show

Yes!
The whole cast played so well WITH each other.
Always loved it when Grandpa says to Herman "you big dummy"😂
I get away with the same things daily.
Now we know where Red Foxx got that line from.
Grandpa wincing as Herman pounded the stakes in was priceless.

And it's actually smoking even after being in the water‼️🐔🐠

Who designed Lily's out fit?. It's fantastic.
They have in various iterations, but never had the charm and humor of the original.
The Munsters are on COZI
You can get the boxed set on DVD.

What a genius show. I’m 64 and watched this as a kid. It’s even funnier now.😂
This TV sitcom was before my time....but I watched all the syndicated episodes during the 1970s as a kid. The Munsters NEVER failed to make me laugh.
Never cared much for sitcoms but the 60s ones like this, the addams family, I dream of genie, and andy griffin I always had a soft spot for

One of my fave shows, since 1966!! I think it and Green Acres are the most uniquely made sitcoms of all time!!!
The best tv comedy show,it we're so funny.
The Munsters has funny parts. My mom thinks I Love Lucy is better & funnier. There's funny parts in both shows.

That's because we will never see great families again. At least not as the norm or for the most part in OUR lifetime.
