Pretty sure Richard was being sarcastic guys. I could be wrong, but the message I got was basically saying women should solve the world's problems if we think we could it better than men. It's almost like saying to OP, oh ur a female mechanic? Well if women like you are so great, why don't you go solve world hunger? OP was happy to take on an occupation that a lot of women don't get into. Like women who decide to become policemen, welders, architects, engineers... they are still choosing fields that are male dominated. It doesn't make them better because they are women, but neither are the men of the same position just because they're men. A person's capabilities and interests aren't restricted to gender. Men and women at the top (those who have the ability to do things that benefit the world with limited loss) usually don't give a shit about others (people who dont benefit them). Men and women of status do not care to change the world for the better because they have money and they want more. Greed isn't limited to gender and there's plenty of it.

Definitely one of the best if not the best channel I've come across in a long time. So genuine and overall like, normal, but in the best way. Very relieving from most of the content you see nowadays from "bigger than life" people. Thank ya for doin' the do!
I seriously appreciate that! Normal is what I aim for 😊 just wanna show people you can do whatever you want, and it’s really not much harder than a little elbow grease and the drive to just jump in 😋
@@hannahleeduggan Which is why I keep directing my daughter to your channel. You're really a great example of "just jump in, put in some effort, and you can do it." 👍 Heck, you inspire me, too!
I agree completely. I'm new to this channel and it is one of the best I've come across. I love how you do all your own work, I also do all my own work here on my homestead from rebuilding the tractor to building a chicken coop, next project a deck. So it's refreshing to see others who do things themselves as well. You have such a great style in everything you do. The photography is fantastic, your artistic sense is amazing, I just can't say enough. I'm really going to enjoy watching you fix up your new homestead in the woods. I also admire your completely free spirit.
OK, lots of comments from a UA-cam “dad”. I am also a photographer so I start there. 1) you have amazingly good composition, color balance and story telling for one so young. I am constantly impressed with the way you are able to develop context and the story into your imagery. 2) Shocking how skilled you are with tools. You go girl! Such artistic talent followed by exceptional execution. 3) get a set of Forstner bits. Instead of cutting notches for your bolt heads a Forstner bit makes a nice clean hole that is as attractive as it is practical. 4) Please, please seal the ends of your boards. Driving in rain will push moisture into the ends of the wood and it will freeze in the winter and expand in the summer and crack. Need a more pressing reason? Cracks=butt splinters etc. 5) you just tell a good story, informative, visually appealing, well executed, you have no where to go but up. I think it is time for some major sponsorship, like tool companies, fashion and notions companies, travel companies, etc, etc. Very best of luck, you are a pro.
@@DavidHuffTexas me too. An open grain like that will soak up water, and cause twisting and warping too. Otherwise Hannah, I salute you for just getting it done. I tend to dither and procrastinate when faced with something new.
Thanks for watching guys! Some notes: -I used aluminum bars because I didn’t want them to rust, they were cheap, and they were lightweight - you could definitely use stainless steel if you wanted something more rigid. My bars (obviously) flex a little, but they’ve been great so far, and no problems! (…I may or may not have filmed this video about a month ago, so I’ve had some time to see how they’ve faired) -The planking I used was cedar planking. I was originally going to buy the plastic type decking boards, but when I was talking it over with the guy at the hardware store we realized the cedar was less expensive, and lighter weight. Plus I got to stain it whatever color I wanted. Just added some top coating to make it weatherproof. (Highly recommend allotting yourself enough time to stain & top coat everything. Takes about a day or two to coat, and then let dry for each.) -Use a metal-drilling bit for the metal bars. -I forgot to mention this in the video, but I decided to forgo a ladder for the time being. I’m pretty good at clambering up to get up there, so spending the money seemed silly, and just extra stuff to deal with. After a while my mom pointed out that she has a handy step for putting her kayaks on the roof of her car; it just attaches to your door latch and you can step up. you're my hero. I love seeing you work ! I just want to suggest, if you haven't already , put something on the end of those aluminium bars so you don't accidentally hurt yourself on the sharp edges when getting up and down. happy travels ❤
Great work Hanna and 4 ****stars just for going it alone and a fifth star* for completion but it never hurts to ask someone that has knowledge in woodworking/decking and I know you din't ask me but I got to tell you that leaving a space between the planks for expansion would have been an excellent idea, with a little luck there is still moisture in your planks so that they may create the shrinkage on there own. Also sealing the ends of the planks to discourage splitting would be a good idea, even a roofing tar like substance would work as the end grain will drink up whatever you apply and once again a great job of just winging it, you are fearless in the project department. Kudos
I manufacture cars. The exterior of vehicles at speed are subject to enormous wind forces and vibrations. Over time I am concerned your fasteners will loosen which may allow something to fly off the van. The simple and proper (and fairly cheap) fix is to replace at least some of the nuts with a nylon inset lock nut. The advantage is if the wood shrinks or the aluminum deforms the fastener will be loose but it won't come off. Have fun. You have a cool van.

Miss Duggan, I just wanted to share with your that, one, I wait for every one of your segues every Friday, because there's always SOMETHING to learn. Two, you and a few others have inspired this 50-year old codger into van life, and I really wanted to thank you for that, ma'am. Hats off. Thirdly, I always find it heartening to see a young woman throw herself into situations that, and please, PLEASE forgive me for being so blunt, I have seen too many women both young and old do exactly the opposite. You're presenting Life Skills, and that is a GEM in this day-and-age. I look forward to your next review!!!
I found your channel by seeing the video of you showing your new cabin, but i love these van videos! You are amazing and as a women who takes pride in being independent and able to do my own handywork, you are inspiring ☀️
I am a 60 yr old woman that ran across one of your youtube videos and now I am mesmerized!! You are courageous, brave, independent, and a free spirit, all the things I wanted to be when I grew up...whenever that is. I think "my ship has sailed" on taking off on an adventure like you have, as I am currently raising my 9 yr old granddaughter and nearly "handicapped" by several worsening, degenerative illnesses and injuries, so I will continue to watch, and live vicariously, through your videos!! Safe travels.
HA! I literally was thinking to myself “how is she getting these angles?” And then you showed how tall your tripod was 😂 anywho, I just found your channel last week and have been going backwards through all your videos and enjoying them very much! You’re super talented in more ways than one. Thanks for sharing ❤️
Those boards are gonna go wild! As others have said, your nuts and bolts won't stay tight without help. If you have enough extra thread on the bolts to hold both safely just double up your nuts with a nylon lock nut. If you want to keep your boards from buckling, run a circular saw between the boards and be sure not to cut into your aluminum rails. The kerf of the blade will give the boards more space to expand. The way your frame is built you wont be able to do anything about the ends twisting and curling though. Looked like you needed some sealant on the ends of the boards too. Make sure it soaks in real good on the end grain and you'll be good to go. p.s.- If you were my daughter I'd be one proud dad!
Definitely be careful up there with any kind of moisture, I stayed at a campsite that had a deck just like this (not on top of a van though lol) and slipped on the sealed wood in the rain and bruise my butt horrendously, 3 years later i still have a massive bump. Just be cautious because the deck could get slippery! Looks awesome!
I would be proud of this if I did it , too . Thanks for the tips , and the informative, fun video . I thought it looked good even before you put the carriage bolts on . When you put the bolts on , the deck looked even better , and more secure . Shows you what I know , because i may have left the project unfinished and not put on the bolts . See, i'm learning stuff .
Just seeing this and I'm in WI; would have loved to have you over! Great job with the deck! It seems to be a game-changer for vanlifers. Would love to know where you got your van. I can't find any, at least affordable and not junky ones, in WI. I see them everywhere as they are great work vans but not many for sale! Keep up the great videos!
If you ever hit a bumpy road take a minute to check your bolts and keep a little bottle of locktite or thread locker and put a little on when tightening them back up. It’ll give you peace of mind Worked great for me!
Good morning. If you haven't already done this, get some silicone caulk and run a thick bead in the gutters. As time goes on, the clamps will put pressure on the drain channels of the gutters. They will begin to separate, and water will leak in. Good luck and safe travels. CHEERS from Colorado
I talked about your videos to my parents and they gave the concerned look wondering if Im trying to make a hint about quitting my job and going on adventures haha I enjoooy your videos, they are so uplifting! Also, congrats for that deck, you did great on your own! Girl power!
hi hannah! i just wanted to say u inspire me a lot wearing pretty clothes and jewelry all while living alone, sometimes in a van, and using power tools is so inspiring. (deleting part of my message bc i’m tired of rude replies)
You are wrong about society holding women back... if you just look around you’ll see women are running anything they want ! With pride!! Step out of the victim hood mentality please.
Nadine I don’t mean to be a mean person and I don’t mind anyone being inspired by someone else but that victimhood mentality just doesn’t fly. Inspiration from others is awesome but saying that society hold you back is completely bull**** . There are way too many examples of people coming up and not being held back by their own victimhood mentality.
@@larrybuckner8619 I don't think she's a victim. I also don't think it's appropriate to tell a woman how to feel. We are certainly capable, I don't think that's in question here. Traditionally, we are not encouraged to be in STEM fields, we are not encouraged to be mechanics, or carpenters, so on and so forth. That is undoubtedly societal. The important point here is that inspiration was found in challenging the norm. I believe that is far from a victim mentality. Even so, it is not up to us to police others' feelings. All this to say: The best we can do is encourage, and say, girls can do anything they want! The first part of your message was productive, but the second part was not.
Woah-- gorgeous job!! I invision you up there in one of your breathtaking locations reading a book or journaling under a beautiful umbrella... Your fearless drive is what's most inspiring to me! Thanks for sharing 🌴🌞
I aspire to be as cool as you! I have a family so can't really get up and live in a van but watching your videos gives motivation to get crafty and be outside get in touch with nature. Stay safe! Best regards
That’s super cool! I’ve thought of doing the same because I love stargazing. I have a roof box and am planning on getting solar soon though so I don’t know if I’ll make it work. Might try though 🙂
I really love watching your videos because it makes me feel inspired with the things that I want to do in life. 😌 I really hope that I get to do the things that I want someday. I would love to be an independent and chill person like you. 😊 (btw I'm still in college)
My Econoline is a half universal conversion, the back half is cargo their is a wall behind the rear seat with a hatch window. Best of both worlds. Since I bought it as a bug out vehicle.
What’s the temperature effect inside this van from the shade? Does it feel cooler? Throw some reflectix on the outside of those windows with some alien tape mounting tape and you may be right there with indoor/outdoor temp parity.
Love that you’re out here doing it all yourself!!! You’re a lil Baddie & I love it! I’ve always felt the same way about doing things myself, & my dad always bought me tools for Xmas 😉👌🏻💗👏🏻 looks amazing too 😍
Great van build 👍👍.🤔 The next time you drill on your deck be sure to put a beer or flat or cardboard to catch the hot metal shavings so it doesn’t melt the paint or any potential metal shavings to rust during the morning due. Same other technique applies when drilling into a roof so the hot shavings doesn’t melt the headliner fabric. Just say precautionary measure.
I like the idea of having a sun deck on a van roof, and to me it looks really pretty. I also appreciate the diy-way it's being done. For myself, I would have done some things slightly different: Fitting the poles to the clamps: In order not to have a rattling roof load soon, I would have used nylock nuts or at least two nuts counterfitting. For the deck: To prevent water sitting on the wood, I would have chosen to set the planks in a slight distance to one another, say about 1/8" or a bit more. That does not really reduce comfort when being up there. The planks, in my opinion, should also be secured against being rattled lose or losing volume due to shrinking of the wood: I would have used nylock nuts at the front and rear bar for that, not locktite, as re-fixing after some time would be easier. Last but not least, I would heavily seal the planks' open ends, for these are the first spots to be soaking water when driving through rain. Someone asked about the weight of that roof load and if the shocks were rated for that: I can not imagine the rated roof load of that vehicle being less than 200 pounds - while driving -. In standstill it could surely bear a lot more, because of no dynamic weight influences. That deck to me seems way less than 200 pounds. So, if not being used to carry anything on top of it: no time to worry!
They sell portable hotubs , if you get a utility trailer, you can carry more things, you can also get privacy tents for outdoor showeres and solar powered shower heads for camping, just look on amazon for outdoor shower or solar powered shower, portable shower, portable hot tub, poertable privacy shower tent. Even a portable outdoor kitchen
Ok but WHY was my immediate reaction to seeing "i made a deck for my van 😎" pop up on my screen "😆 classic hannah" What a creative soul, you are ^_^ and DUH fashion icon always 😜
Dang! you could use that tripod as a center pole for a tent! One of my Van Life friends has a deck on their van, that also holds a drum of water in a gravity fed system.
I’m impressed! You used a tape measure and the correct tools. The biggest thing is you did it yourself. Found your page this week and enjoy your posts.
I just found it myself and YT suggested Unstoppable Morgan to me the other day, she's kinda doing the same thing, getting away from people. They both impress me, I've roughed it myself and I wish I knew 1/2 what these ladies do.
Nice work. Looks good, and I bet it will be a great place to hang out. Don’t forget to seal or somehow cap the front edge fo those boards. We’d be interested to know if the shade from the deck keeps the roof and the van interior any cooler. Good Vibrations

Just goes to show that you can learn from, and be inspired by, people of any age, right ? (BTW, fellow codger here) 👍
Great video Hannah, you make everything seem so doable 😂 you inspire me ♥️
You've got me totally captivated with what else you are going to to. Very glad your story was recommended to me.
Thanks! I learned something today! I also celebrated with you when you completed the roof deck!😊
Your a do it yourself type of person and that's so cool🙋

I lived in Laona back in 94, for 1 year. it had gotten to wind chill -60 F for a week & thats thee sticks indeed! nice DIY Ms. Duggan

Right on, love that u just tackle tasks n do you girl, rock on!! From a Fellow female van lifer that built her own.
I found your channel by seeing the video of you showing your new cabin, but i love these van videos! You are amazing and as a women who takes pride in being independent and able to do my own handywork, you are inspiring ☀️

Wow girl you did that, and It came out amazing so impressed
This is so cool Hannah!!!
Really good idea , I’m now thinking about doing the same on my van ^^ thx
I'm truely impressed and I have
instantly fell in love with your channel! Reminds me of myself😆
My new favorite channel honestly!
Dude I'm hooked not even sure how I found this but can't stop watching
It’ll give you peace of mind
Worked great for me!
kudos, you did a really good job!
Love it! Love you and your videos!!!
I have never clicked a video faster. Omg, literally obsessed
Good morning. If you haven't already done this, get some silicone caulk and run a thick bead in the gutters. As time goes on, the clamps will put pressure on the drain channels of the gutters. They will begin to separate, and water will leak in. Good luck and safe travels. CHEERS from Colorado
Another great project... great job 😊
Impressed! You are so resourceful, you will make some super lucky guy quite the catch some day!
I talked about your videos to my parents and they gave the concerned look wondering if Im trying to make a hint about quitting my job and going on adventures haha I enjoooy your videos, they are so uplifting!
Also, congrats for that deck, you did great on your own! Girl power!
Your videos are sick I love the projects, somethin bout em gets me excited
I want one for little Susie. Really good install. Bravo!
hi hannah! i just wanted to say u inspire me a lot
wearing pretty clothes and jewelry all while living alone, sometimes in a van, and using power tools is so inspiring.
(deleting part of my message bc i’m tired of rude replies)
You are wrong about society holding women back... if you just look around you’ll see women are running anything they want ! With pride!! Step out of the victim hood mentality please.
Larry Buckner let the girl share her inspiration, Larry. She’s feeling empowered. No need to interject.
Nadine The same goes for your message
Woah-- gorgeous job!! I invision you up there in one of your breathtaking locations reading a book or journaling under a beautiful umbrella...
Your fearless drive is what's most inspiring to me! Thanks for sharing 🌴🌞
I aspire to be as cool as you! I have a family so can't really get up and live in a van but watching your videos gives motivation to get crafty and be outside get in touch with nature. Stay safe! Best regards
wonderhannah ❤️ the woman who can do everything wow I really enjoy watching you build that deck what you’re always slaying my queen
Very cool set up HannaH ! Thanks for sharing !
I love it!! I can't believe you didn't stain the ends of the boards though. That made me laugh but that deck is so caaayuuuute 😍
That’s super cool! I’ve thought of doing the same because I love stargazing. I have a roof box and am planning on getting solar soon though so I don’t know if I’ll make it work. Might try though 🙂
Your name made me lol
I really love watching your videos because it makes me feel inspired with the things that I want to do in life. 😌 I really hope that I get to do the things that I want someday. I would love to be an independent and chill person like you. 😊 (btw I'm still in college)
Nice new view! Congrats on expanding your space.
Awesome! Looks beautiful! I'm so glad for you!! xoxo
Great job!!... I truly believe you can pretty much do anything you choose to Hannah!! 🚐✌️💕
My Econoline is a half universal conversion, the back half is cargo their is a wall behind the rear seat with a hatch window. Best of both worlds. Since I bought it as a bug out vehicle.
What’s the temperature effect inside this van from the shade? Does it feel cooler? Throw some reflectix on the outside of those windows with some alien tape mounting tape and you may be right there with indoor/outdoor temp parity.
so many talents !!! love your videos
Love that you’re out here doing it all yourself!!! You’re a lil Baddie & I love it! I’ve always felt the same way about doing things myself, & my dad always bought me tools for Xmas 😉👌🏻💗👏🏻 looks amazing too 😍
That deck is sooo bad ass!!!!
Just say precautionary measure.
rad!! what a great idea! sunshine, coffee mornings, woo! lol 😊😊😊
I like the idea of having a sun deck on a van roof, and to me it looks really pretty. I also appreciate the diy-way it's being done.
For myself, I would have done some things slightly different:
Fitting the poles to the clamps: In order not to have a rattling roof load soon, I would have used nylock nuts or at least two nuts counterfitting.
Someone asked about the weight of that roof load and if the shocks were rated for that:
I can not imagine the rated roof load of that vehicle being less than 200 pounds - while driving -. In standstill it could surely bear a lot more, because of no dynamic weight influences.
That deck to me seems way less than 200 pounds. So, if not being used to carry anything on top of it: no time to worry!
Omg her building this in pigtails and a lil skirt, what a vibe
You inspire me young lady. Awesome job.
The vibes in this video... impeccable
Ok but WHY was my immediate reaction to seeing "i made a deck for my van 😎" pop up on my screen "😆 classic hannah"
What a creative soul, you are ^_^ and DUH fashion icon always 😜
Dang! you could use that tripod as a center pole for a tent!
Well, that's patronising.
Really good job! You go girl!!!!
Oh Hannah, this is awesome! Can you tell me where you got the gutter clamps from?
Nice work. Looks good, and I bet it will be a great place to hang out.
Don’t forget to seal or somehow cap the front edge fo those boards.
We’d be interested to know if the shade from the deck keeps the roof and the van interior any cooler.
Good Vibrations
