I love how "Friends of P" was so deadpan and static, and then the Rentals followed it up with a video that's in constant motion. Guys falling through the ceiling, car chases, bike tricks, and an effin' helicopter. Amazing. These guys should've been huge.
Some random trivia: Matt started The Rentals mainly because he wanted a project where he could work with Rachel & Petra from That Dog. In the early day of both bands, Weezer proclaimed That Dog to be their favorite band. Yes, that’s Maya on keyboards here. Before this gig, she was the original That Dog drummer (before they ever recorded anything). The friendships and intertwining lives and careers of the members of Weezer / The Rentals / That Dog go back to their high school days.
Synthesizers seen in this video: Moog Source (2x) (played by Jim Richards and Cherielynn Westrich) Moog Opus-3 (played by Maya Rudolph) Crumar GDS (played by Jim Richards) On the album, however, all of these are played mainly by Tom Grimley.
The woman doing the countdown -- that is Rachel Haden, the identical sister of violist-singer Petra Haden (Tanya was the other one--hence triplet sisters). Rachel was with The Rentals as a bass player and singer twice in her career. She was an original member but left the group shortly before the band's first CD was released, followed by Petra soon afterward.
Yeah, the Hadens were also in another great band That Dog. Tanya married Jack Black. I'm also pretty sure that's Maya Rudolph from SNL on the other keyboard/harmonizing.
Caleb Drew they ALL have money from one project or another. The Haden triplets are very talented and well paid, Maya Rudolph was born into money and is slap famous in her own right (SNL as well as several movies and shows) Matt had Weezer and other bands and projects, etc., etc....
For those of you who don't know who Maya Rudolph's mother is, she is none other than Minnie Riperton, a singer gifted for her amazing falsetto on the 1975 hit "Lovin' You."
Politico just published a lengthy profile on Cherie Westrich, the blonde keyboardist. She's now in the state legislature of Iowa and is a trump supporter. The other keyboardist is Maya Rudolph who went on to Saturday Night Live. Interesting legacy from a short-lived band.
Cherielynn.. ahhhhh so cute. I knew I recognized her from somewhere else, and it's Overhaulin! She was on Chip's A-team! She's quite the badass car gal. Super nice and very talented.
Vi a The Rentals de teloneros de Blur en 1993. Personalmente, su actuación me gustó más que la de Blur. Es estupendo poder ver sus videos para recordar esos años de juventud.
I also want to say that the first couple of times I saw this video (back in 1996) that Petra's smile (as she does her mimed viola solo at the 2:03 mark) reminded me of Alanis Morissette with short hair.
There’s another version of this video that replaces some of it with clips from the movie “Joe’s Apartment.” That was the version I saw the most when it aired. Can’t even find it on UA-cam.
Man. How good Weezer could have been had Matt Sharp stayed in the band. I love Weezer so I can’t even imagine. All these years later this tune still rocks!
I think everyone on here knows that Maya Rudolph in the band but did anyone realize that the blonde female, Cherielynn Westrich, was on the show Overhauling and is currently running for the Iowa State House of Representatives as a Republican?
I think that both of them contributed essential parts to the band. The best material Weezer ever released was on those two albums and though Matt might not have penned most of the albums output he put an unmistakable stamp on their sound. I think The Rentals and Weezer (give or take) are solid by themselves but they were certainly better together. However, I personally think The Rentals have more songs that are open to a lot of repeated listens. That's just me, though.
I think youre right abt the last part, i listened to return of the rentals like 5 times while in call playing minecraft, and even after i still wasnt really tired of listening to it lol
Wonder why they they barely showed Maya Rudolph in this video. Other people had highlights and special entrances and she barely got any camera time. 🤷🏾♂️
@MrJackMeOffski Well it's a good thing you looked it up, found this video, probably played it, clicked on the comment box, and typed those three words.
I always like to think the helicopter that picks up Matt at the end of the video is Rivers taking him back to record Pinkerton.
Luke O'Brien lol
5 years later=still resonates

Friends of P was basically the worst song they couldn't made a single
@@CB0STL They had way better songs that could have been lead singles instead of Friends Of P.

One of my favourite time capsules.

Songs from the black hole
What high school? Fairfax? Hollywood?
I think of The Rentals and Weezer as being like ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and The Move.

2024 and this song still fucking bops. Doesn’t ever hurt to have Rachel Haden from That Dog providing some violin.

Wow, I miss this decade.
This song/video makes me happy and sad at the same time, like a good dream that I woke up from.
I awoke from troubled slumber and this song was in my head and kicked the funk to the curb.I think that I will watch it again.
I miss this weezer and rentals era. And then that bass player who replaced sharp for the green album who did a lot of drugs... He was a cool guy RIP
Why doesn't this have at least a million views? Music UA-cam is failing music.
Reminds me of "The Good Life" music video
yes, me too
I saw Weezer and No Doubt together at great woods back in 98'- awesome performances, the good old days...
the second best weezer album after the blue
It’s like Weezer and That Dog had a less pretentious baby 😂
I love this video :) its so cute and goofy with the cute girls singing and the speeding car, the helicopter and bicycle race
I love nice sunburst Fender Jazzmaster electric guitar :) The Rentals rocked hard
Damn I didn't know there was a video for this song! I'm in my 40s and I've been living under a rock lol
The rentals are underrated

She was also the inspiration for "Lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful" Her mum wrote/sang that lovely tune♥
I have a theory that this song is about rivers. Mainly the “write a real sweet tune” and “no more barbershop harmonies.”
plus, rivers wrote a song called "waiting on you" Coincidence? I think not!
Maya Rudolph was so cute here and still is! I love her!
