And compared to the original version that sounded so much more upbeat and hopeful this is indeed very sad. Like Lennon said about The Beatles after they broke up "The dream is over".
It's pretty clear that Sharp and Cuomo very different artists and to me it's obvious why they never worked together in the end, but they're both talented and it's nice to see them play like this.
This is absolutely wonderful. The are both fantastic artists. I would love to see them playing together from time to time. To be honest. Weezer was amazing with both of them working together
@@runnersdialzero1244 They settled a court case out of court before weezer started making money again after Matt left. So we can say that Matt literally ‘has a case’ in being a significant component of weezer’s early success
In case you anyone didn't know a newer version of this song appears on the Rentals first album Return of the Rentals where the name was changed to Please Let That Be You.
I wonder if they avoided doing a Weezer song fans really wanted to hear on purpose. Who at this show wouldn't be overwhelmed with sweat to hear the two of them do "El Scorcho" ?
Matt didn't write songs for Weezer, not even his own Bass lines. It's not because of Matts departure that Weezer changed, it's because Rivers changed after the backlash that Pinkerton got. P.S.: I love Matt Sharp and The Rentals, he just didn't participate as much in Weezer as people say. His falsetto background vocals were fire though.
I remember reading the liner notes on the blue album and Pat and Brian had co-writing credits on a song or two. That's how you collect significant royalties, you need writing/co-writing. I was surprised to see, because Matt's influence on the band seemed obvious, that on Blue and Pink he didn't have any writing credit. I'm guessing that he was making less money than everyone else in the band, so he departed. Then again, Pinkerton was a flop when it first came out, so who knows what differences between them that may have caused artistically.
+Michael Carlo Pink got some heart songs. And that triangle on her sleeve let me know i was barking up the wrong tree. But, really, it sealed their fan base for their pork n beans filler pop crap like Beverly hills. These guys are from my neck of the woods.. near Buffalo NY
sean james yeah rivers and pat used to be in a different band before weezer, when that broke up they decided to start a new band and write 50 songs together before doing a single show. They didn’t write 50, but some survived to the blue album, and pat got his credit.
Last year Rivers released a whole bundle of demos that span the entire career of weezer- one of the bundles is called “Rivers Cuomo and Patrick Wilson through the years” and it’s got some great shit on it
Don't get me wrong, I love Matt as much as anyone. Return of the Rentals is in my top 10 albums of all time, (though you have to admit, he hasn't done anything of note since) but I don't know why everyone seems to think his departure directly resulted in a decrease in songwriting quality. He had very little to do with writing anything on Blue and Pink, thus the reason he wanted out in the first place (Pat also has said he came very close to leaving at that time as well for the same reason). He himself has said "If Weezer sucks now, they'd still suck if I were in it". That and River's has openly talked about wanting to change up his style after how hard Pink bombed at the time of it's release. Again, don't get me wrong; I'd love it if he'd never left, but I think the notion that Weezer would have continued to stay at the same quality if he hadn't is inherently flawed.
I dont know I much prefer ROTR, but I guess SMM's style is what they ended up following more for most of their albums after that. I had a hard time liking the other Rentals albums considering how far they deviated from Return of the Rentals
I have a story if anyone wants to read.. heres my story, I have missed out on seeing Weezer 3 times now (I have never seen them live). 1st time was during the Green Album at Virgin records (RIP) in NYC. I was 1 minute late to get a wristband and they did not have anymore. 2nd time I called up a radio station to win tickets and I was caller 7 and I needed to be 9. 3rd time I was actually outside the venue without a ticket and there was an assload of people.
The Green Album and Maladroit are genius. Matt did add a nice quirky touch to =W= but he wasn't as instrumental in the sound as he gets credit for. Rivers got really weird after the reception Pinkerton received after it's release and that had more to do with the music than Matt's departure.
everyone needs to stop saying Weezer isn't good anymore cause I just recently saw them live and they still have it. Scott isn't as good as Matt but Scott is all right and has a different sound. Some of their newer songs are good and they're coming out with a new album which might have some really good songs on it. Not everything can be the blue album, pinkerton, or sound just like them. Weezer is still Weezer.
Rent Boy on Lou Reed after he left the Velvet Underground: "No, it's not bad, but it's not great either. And in your heart you kind of know that although it sounds all right, it's actually just shite." ...just sayin'.
Rivers is the Rock n Roll, Sharp is the creativity. Neither really works without the other. New Weezer is just crap rock, The Rentals were creative but lacked teeth. We need these guys together.
calvin peck Rivers is more pop than rock now. The two Black Album songs we’ve heard so far are evident of that. I think he’s trying to wipe his track record, evident by the fact he called fans who enjoyed his old sound “zombie bastards” in one of the singles. Sad to see such talent go into that crap
I really don't know how you figure that. Of course, his falsettos and fuzz bass are great, but he contributed next to nothing to the actual songwriting, or "creativity", of Blue and Pink. That's why he left. That's not me hating on him, I love him, it's just the way it is.
Why are people going on about Matt and Rivers as if they where ever a partnership? They could've been the American Lennon/McCartney(maybe stretching it a bit) if they learned to write together but sadly that never happened.
ROTR (and probably Seven More Minutes also) are better than anything post-Pinkerton, but what he's is saying is that Matt Sharp never wrote anything on Blue or Pinkerton. Matt contributed his falsetto, and maybe the fuzz bass, but he never claimed to have written anything on those records until his lawsuit. Matt even credits Rivers with giving him the courage to write his own stuff.

I SERIOUSLY would not miss it for the 4th time.... I just wanted to share that! By the way this is such a beautiful video... So nice to see them together. "matt and rivers they way to should be". thesoftsquid... its obvious that you have never played in a band. It would be my dream come true to see Matt and Rivers and Pat and Brian play together again. They have a connection a chemistry that is undeniable... Its NOT the same without them TOGETHER... Whether its the Rentals or Weezer. I miss them playing together.
I agree with the "matt and rivers the way it should be" sentiment, but Matt isn't the one who gave weezer their heavier, fuzzy sound. It was Pat. Pat would make instrumental demos (guitar and drums) and Rivers would write melodies and lyrics for them. For example, My Name Is Jonas was a song that came together that way.
yeap!!! weezer without matt is not as weezer as they were! blue and pinkerton, and b-sides during weezer+matt sharp era were the best!! geek rock forever!
I only got really into Weezer recently....I know I missed the boat like 10 years ago haha....but could anyone explain what happened in the band and why did Matt Sharp leave?
Actually I prefer "Please Let That Be You" to "Mrs. Young". PLTBY is much more upbeat and I love the sound of the moog. Not to mention Maya Rudolph and Rachel Haden look much better than Rivers.
@tuleli It hasn't been said. Matt said he left the band, Rivers said he fired him. I'm guessing Matt just wasn't into the music. His solo work is very different. Since Matt wasn't into it, he probably wasn't very serious about Weezer. Rivers needed a more dedicated member. Matt filed a lawsuit because he wasn't getting any royalties for the first two albums. Rivers and Matt settled it out of court eventually. But obviously things won't be the same after all that. They made amends, and thats it.
i love this song so much. weezer is my fav band, but its not the same without matt. blue and pinkerton are my all time two top albums. but i guess thats the way with most of you who bother reading this so ill just stop writing now already. ok.

I understand the urge to want to look for a reason that Weezer sucks now. And it's easy to pick Matt as a scapegoat because he went on to make some decent records himself, and because Scott is absolutely terrible. But the reality is that Weezer just sucks now because Rivers decided to be a real life troll, jettison his "old, out of touch fans," and try to court fame and make meta-statements about pop culture instead of write good songs.
i didn't cry because of the song, i cried because of seeing

definitely
Everyone wishes they'd make more music together. That's why the music of early Weezer was so brilliant, Rivers+Matt together.
Matt had a smaller part than people really think
Early Weezer was mostly Rivers' and Pat's baby. Matt had very little to do with why their 90s material is as good as it is.

3. Say It Ain't So
4. Undone (The Sweater Song)
