I'm no expert but I have done a complete strip and replaced all the bearings,(which would probably cure the free play), layshaft,(not the cogs, just the shaft) and the parts for this are available as a kit for around £90.
Jumping out of gear on overrun is usually caused by worn engagement teeth which should be evident on inspection.
I'm not sure the movement on the first motion shaft would be so evident in use as it would be stabilized by being engaged in the clutch bush but it is possible that a worn needle roller bearing between the first motion and output shaft is 'assisting' the movement.
If you do strip and rebuild be very careful to get the indent balls installed correctly as they prevent two gears being engaged at the same time, not good!!
Also be super careful of the toothed sleeve that engages first and second gear as if you slide it too far three spring loaded balls escape and they are a devil to get back in,(the voice of experience)!
If I can find it I could send you a link to an excellent step by step guide to rebuilding the box which I found invaluable.
There is also a good video worth watching if you would like the link to that.
Let me know if you would like me to send them.
    Good luck!

Hi DC-dp3hk! Thanks so much for your comment and the insight you have given us. The gearbox is waiting to go onto the bench which has been taken over by the engine at the moment. Once thats done we will reach out and get those links for the video you mention.

I would check the detent springs and balls first, that's what gives that positive feeling when putting it in gear. Wouldn't hurt to put new bulk rings in it to. Good luck with your car 👍😎

Movement of the INPUT shaft while the box is out of the car is normal, when the box and engine are together the pilot bearing / bush in the rear of the crankshaft prevent it. Perhaps a look at that bush might be in order? Often the cause of this jumping out of gear would be either the input shaft moving slightly forward or the output shaft moving slightly rearwards, bringing the synchromesh sleeve against the tapered part of the teeth, the angled surfaces giving an axial thrust pushing the gears apart. A look at the bearings and any circlips which hold them is advised.

so it seems you are correct the spigot bush had disintegrated causing the input shaft to move, this destroyed the bearing. good shout thank you

Unfortunately I have no idea either. But mine jumps out of second which is a common gear for it to jump out of and obviously top gear like yours is much more of a problem. I have no crunching when putting it back into gear.
Anyway good luck and I’ll follow your progress.

It sounds like the syncromesh on fourth gear is worn, you can get all the parts you need to rebuild your gearbox.

Thanks Tony. We have been waiting on some comments to come in so will be sure to check this out. At the moment precious bench space is being taken up with the engine (video to come next week), then we can get back to the gearbox! Thanks for watching and commenting.

all the synchro's were perfect in fact the inside of the box was in great condition, but it seems the spigot bush had failed allowing the input shaft to move, in turn destroying the bearing allowing the input shaft to move around and skip out of gear. haven't tried it on the road yet so fingers crossed. thanks for the advice though.
