  • Continuing on with another compilation video, this time it is the Band of the Scots Guards, unfortunately when going through all my videos it appears that I do not have very many of them, so I am afraid this is a short compilation today. Mostly taken at rehearsals for Trooping of the Colour and Remembrance Sunday.

Fine video. My favorite part is 0:10 - 0:45. The band does a great job with this turn. It is a thing of beauty.

A Yank from Chicago, here. My first question:
At 5:56, there is a trumpet player in the ranks who is wearing a sword. Is this an officer playing under the direction of the Drum Major, who I assume is a Warrant Officer? Is this unusual?

@William Schmidt. On full ceremonial occasions Guards Warrant Officers ( Class 1 and 2), including musicians in the band, wear swords, hence the trumpeter that you mentioned will be a musician Warrant Officer.

There is also a Tuba player in the rank behind carrying a sword also a W.O.

      Thank you for your replies.
I enjoy the music and precision of the marching bands of the British Military. It is interesting to see the hand and mace signals vary from one organization to others. The flourishing of the Drum Majors in State Dress is very impressive. I also enjoy the performances of the various bagpipe bands, both military and civilian.
A Happy Christmas to you all and the hope for a prosperous, happy, healthy, and, hopefully, a more normal New Year to everyone.

It is like the Admiral on board a ship. The Admiral appoints the captain of the ship. Once that's done, the Admiral must ask the permission of the captain to be able to board the ship. Once permission is granted, the admiral may board and then tell the Captain what he/she wants the ship to do, but, does not tell the Captain how to do it nor give any orders to any other crew members. Thus an officer outranking the Drum Major who joins in under the command of the Drum Major, that officer does what he/she is told until dismissed from that band formation. All very common. Of course, all due respect is paid to that senior officer.

@@pj2boys The 7 Regiments of the Household Division each have their own band. My personal experience is with the Foot Guards bands, in particular the Grenadiers. Each of these bands is much smaller than it was in the decades prior to the '90's. I believe they now number about 45, men and women. The basic rank/ title is "Musician". They can progress to be "Lance-Corporal", "Lance-Sergeant", "Sergeant", "Pay/Staff-Sergeant" and "Band Sgt.-Major" (Warrant Officer class 2). Leading the band when marching is the "Drum Major" who is a member of the "Corps of Drums", an entirely separate "body". (On operations they take on a combat role; the Band do not)). The "Director of Music" of each band is, generally, a "Major" or a "Lieutenant-Colonel". Together with the Senior Warrant (and other senior ranks) they are responsible for training(generally musical) and all aspects of administration. The "Director of Music" would never be (quote) "joining in under the command of the "Drum Major". A "Drum Major" would never tell a "Director of Music" what or how to do anything relating to the Band.
