You do you bro, a lot of things are frowned upon in various car cultures. A lot of people will not share knowledge they have gained over years, it's priceless. Even though I can see where your coming from, you were just looking for angle on how to approach the project. More power to you. Nothing better than a built not bought rig!🍻🤘
Wow keep it coming. You are going to help a lot of guys/gals out. This series could possibly be one of the most viewed impala builds. Definitely not much out there on the conversion.
If I remember correctly the front a pillar can either be cut at the spot weld and swapped or you can peel back each layer of metal and section it in( it's about 4 layers of metal. 4 door and 2 door/rag windshield are different too. In the rear if I remember correctly you need to cut the rag from the door opening because the rag B pillar is different and has reinforcemens that need to be swapped. Also the top of the rear wheel houses are very important and different. The hardtop wheel house is round and the rag is dented on the top of the wheel house to allow the rack to fully lay down. In the rear of the quarter panel you need to cut beyond the rear hinges (rag hinges are different than hardtop hinges) and transplant the whole assembly as one unit. So that's the B pillar, top of the wheel houses and the rear hinges and brackets all need to be swap as one unit. You basically need to transplant the entire convertible tub excluding the floor pans. There's also an extra reinforcement under the rockers on the convertible that's also important. The rockers are also 3 piece rockers on the rag. On the 2 doors you just have the inner and outer rocker. The rag has an inner reinforcement sandwiched between the inner and out rocker. If you need to know anything else ask away. I have study this swap and almost attempted it.
I appreciate it bro! All info helps. I have been studying what I can find. I knew about the wheel tubs but don’t know about the b pillars. My next step I’m going to cut the quarters off the vert, they are not usable anyway. And that way I can look inside everything and compare the two.
@@RJTickler ok I found something for you. Check this guy out. www.impalas.net/forums/30-welcome-forum/686-61-convertible-resto-found-ditch.html#/topics/686?page=1
It's an enormous amount of work. I am just finishing up the metal work on my 64 conversion. For me the work started in the rockers as they need reinforcing inside. Grafting in the tub is tedious. I hooked up my tub to an engine hoist with a boom added on hoist and lowered and raised tub a ton of times till she fit like a glove. I included the rain gutter of deck lid on my tub. Use the whole convertible section of deck lid rain gutter as it is specific. The best tip I can give You on windshield post is this: After studying this on how I was going to weld in convertible windshield frame I noticed my 4 door and convertible shared the exact same lamination on interior side of car. Use it.....as it goes down the A pillar and will be super strong when welded all together. You gotta have patience as there is nothing fast paced about this. I am super happy with mine. Never cut a car before and this car came out better than I ever imagined. Good luck.
James Smith thanks for the tips man. Did you keep both wheel tubs attached to the rear seat pan? And lower it all in as one unit. Also did you cut the full quarters off?
Yes I cut the top of the tub that is convertible specific. Cut it big of course to start out. To the tubs attached was the rear seat back and the deck lid rain gutter with pinch weld and quarters to the B pillar. As far as quarters go I left the of quarters on 4 door to help me line up tub as tub was fit in. One weld seam at top of quarter . When I was happy with fitment and tube tacked in I went and assemble entire car. Lined it all up from front of fender to rear of quarter. The is a long line and you want it straight. Like I said you have to have patience to do it right. I have 7 impalas patiently waiting and went for the toughest job first. We are contractors and been welding for 30 years so have shop, tools and a sense of how things go together. You will do fine.
I don’t think I’ve seen any videos on UA-cam on how to convert a 4 door impala to a convertible... definitely interested in watching the episodes like always. Door panels on the 4 door look good.
Loving it bro. Think the only thing I’d done differently before cutting the top off would maybe been weld in some braces for the floor pan flex. Just an old hot rod way of keeping things squared up. Idk maybe don’t matter. Keep up the good work and keep them coming
I’ve had a few people ask about this. But I’m reality if I wasn’t comfortable with this car not having a top without bracing running to the floor then it wouldn’t make any sense to make it a convertible because it’s not going to have supports rolling down the road. If I get to a point where I’m cutting more off it will need supported for sure.
The only thing I would brace is the rear tub of the convertible. If you brace the 4 door you would be cutting them out to drop the tub in. I can offer some insight but I don't know how to PM on youtube.
You should run a couple of temporary struts to prevent the car from bowing inwards. enough to give you a massive headache later. I converted a mk 2 jag into a 2 door coupe.

I have done a few 1970's Impala's but all was 2 door hard tops. From right off the rear fender wells was taller top would not go all the way down. The front glass section I cut down to fire wall welded steel tubing to slide windshield frame over and welded together. Interior body welded rear quarter section in to mount convertible rack. My frame was boxed in but 1964 has X frame already boxed. The rear panel between trunk and top needs to be convertible it is two pieces pinch welded together also has slightly different shape. That’s a stupid statement. You ever restored a car? It’s about the same amount of work. Most restorations end up with new floors, quarters, door skins. Body work all over. This is about the same instead of putting 4 door stuff back on I’m putting 2 door stuff on.
@@RJTickler Sorry for the stupidity ;-P but yeah I have, a couple late 50's chevys....
Just started watching part 2.... I guess I assumed this was a job you got hired to do, and was looking at it through that lense... also the fact that you got the yellow boy for only 400$ .... seeing all that I could understand being willing to put the fab into it.
I don't know much about impalas.... I just assumed that much of it would involve stretching body panels and the like.... it reminds me of a buddy who I got my 57 chevy 4100 from, he had a the same make/model, and attempted to turn it into a quad cab... I'm sure it being a convertible gives you a lot of leeway.... but still what your talking about here @11:00 is a lot if one plans to do it right, regardless of your experience and skill.
sorry if my original comment came of condescending (I did not mean it to
Hell yes!
I've never seen a conversation video
Oh yea
That looks like 3 and 3/4" to me, not 3 and a 1/4".
What up with the moon roof
Official Kamakazi for sale. Local pick up only though.
@@RJTickler damn would look good in my coupe deville
Why do people like 2 doors better than 4 doors?
Did any one ask what’s wrong with the convertible right there
Clean it all out first then you can truly see how bad it is and what all you really need. If you need info
How bad what is? The vert? Lol it needs EVERYTHING. The 4 door? It needs EVERYTHING lol I don’t need it cleaned out to figure that out.
