If only some of the best titles on the system (especially ones like Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Sunshine, Kirby’s Air Ride, FE: Path of Radiance, F-Zero GX, The Thousand Year Door and so on) weren’t so expensive to find a copy of.
It was underrated at the time, but also not, because the Gamecube had some INSANELY stiff competition. You had the PS2 juggernaut releasing with some nice exclusives and a trump card in the form of a subsidized DVD player in every PS2 console along with Microsoft's Xbox with absolute top-of-the-line hardware and the former Dreamcast team back for blood, plus fucking Halo and Halo 2. And let me remind you, Halo just absolutely CARVED a path through all its competitors for good reason, formally signalling the start of the rampage of OG Bungie which finally culminated and ended with Halo Reach. Nobody could adequately compete with Bungie in their area. Not one studio. In summary, Nintendo brought an AR15 to the fight, but Sony and Microsoft brought bazookas. Nintendo simply got outclassed. Unlucky, but that's how it goes sometimes.
@@arnox4554 fair to say and I completely agree with you. The PS2 and Xbox's Halos and overall underpower really overshadowed this console into third place. An unfortunate fate, but I feel like it had no shot on launch.
You might have wanted the GBA GC disc to show it off on the channel, in which case this won’t apply, but if you weren’t aware it’s much more economical to replace a missing disc with an Action Replay and a copy of Swiss and GB Interface nowadays.
Never had one as a teen (I owned a Megadrive/Genesis), but got into retro collecting about a decade ago. The Gamecube (next to the Mega-CD) grew to be one of my favorite consoles out there. Such great titles.
I picked up this exact same system CIB as new in 2017 for only 5000 yen when I was in Japan and did a video on it back then too. I couldn't get it out of the store fast enough! The clear controller still remains unused and I will never use it as I have my trusty Wavebirds. Great pick up Michael.
I always did things a little different. My mates had Playstation, I had N64. Friends had PS2, I had Dreamcast. Buddies played XBOX, I had GameCube. No regrets. So many good memories. I miss the early 00’s 😢
Do you plan on retrobrighting that clear controller? It looks incredibly yellowed, even more than many I've seen pictures of online. I'd love to see a video of you doing that if you plan to.
This guy, knows quality gaming, chibi robo is a great game. One of my favorite indie games even though I only played it once at Walmart it was engraved in my mind all these years.. Now I'm playing it off a homebrew Wii
The store named in the manual is my favorite franchise back in old days (not the exact branch though)... I guess they bankrupted already unfortunately.
Its amazing that I had a Gamecube almost 25 years ago and sickening I got rid of it 20 years ago at Computer Exchange (CeX)[in the UK] One silver lining is that CeX wouldn't take third party controllers so when years later I got a Wii, my mate who I gave three third party controllers to (MadCatz etc) returned them and I had four player Mario Party!
Basically like putting a pirated disc into it, without a mod chip it refuses to read it. Basically importing the console back then was hard to get real copies but instead easier to get Rips burned to mini dads
@@MichaelMJD oh I thought you meant that you thought after a certain point, it would stop you, as they usually do on modern consoles. I didn't know you knew that. Enjoy the rest of your night/day! (It's 10 PM for me that's why I said that)
Mr Michael(angelo - best turtle and he painted some stuff too), have you heard of Sendico? Maybe it doesn't have a service in North America but another UA-camr (Retro Future) uses it a lot. Its buying stuff from Yahoo auctions Japan and then you build up stuff you've bought and then they post it to you or something.
I would solder R6 under the heat sink after using a hairdryer to loosen it. Use a little thermal paste to put it back together and poof you have an American system now.
Love your content mjd I have watched like over 100 of your leanthy vids and you inspired me to do stuff with computers and use some vintage technology myself keep up the good work
1 Japanese import product I purchased 2 of actually equalled 1 of the same US product here in the states and that is the smash bros ultimate gamecube controller
The Japanese GameCube is much cheaper than the US console but I still chose the US version coz they are much better than Japanese console. Btw it's nice to see you unboxing a Gamecube other than review computers.
Ok, the GameCube...Many mods, it's fairly easy to change this GameCube from Japan to US by one solider spot(tiny spot)... I have 3 GameCubes. The Same color Silver(US version), a Black one, and a Spice Orange one (pd $26) all with their matching GB player. A Xeno mod is cheap ($6-10) fairly easy to solder on, and will allow you to play discs from any place or burned discs. Then you can get a SD2sp2 ($5-10) and a MicroSD card with a SWISS disc and play games right off the SD using the ports under the GC... Getting a GOOD video output out of the GC is not easy, the Component cables from Nintendo sell for $180+ but, 3rd parties make them starting at $70, or you can find a device called the GCplug, sells on Aliexperss for like $45 to get HDMI out... works pretty well... BTW.... Memory cards... The Japan memory cards are formatted DIFFERENTLY than a US one. If you have a US one with saves on it and put in a japanese one, it WILL FORMAT IT. BE WARNED ! Ask me how I know this.... Yea, I know the GC very well....
1:39 that's not always true... I found Animal Forest e+ for only around $27 or $30 with the case! while the U.S. Game (which I own) Is about $50 without the case.

Hey Michael, Can you Take a look at some custom Windows Vista ISOs?
Nice video Michael! If possible, could you take a look at Windows 11 development builds?
i like your videos so much btw
i. want to support
The Gamecube was always such an underrated console. One of the most ergonomic controllers and best libraries of any Nintendo console.
As the Wii U in my opinion
If only some of the best titles on the system (especially ones like Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Sunshine, Kirby’s Air Ride, FE: Path of Radiance, F-Zero GX, The Thousand Year Door and so on) weren’t so expensive to find a copy of.
The only big problem I personally have with the GameCube is that the best games on the system demand HUGE prices online and in thrift stores.
It was underrated at the time, but also not, because the Gamecube had some INSANELY stiff competition. "Michael Buys Expensive Things from Japan“ is my favourite show from now on! :D
Hope the move goes well, and don't forget Eddy! He's a required character on the channel

I have so many memories with the GameCube! Such a great library of games.
Facts
Super Monkey Ball was excellent, but when it came out on the Wii I got it and strangely enough it was so difficult to play with a motion controller
With homebrew, you can bypass the region lock, and even use your Gameboy player without the disc. Still is a pretty neat bundle.
I like the pop-up info bits on the top left, small details but easy on the eyes and makes the video standout more
Very cool video! Not gonna lie I still would love a Panasonic Q (GameCube / DVD player).
Japanese consoles are always fun to unboxing and play with. Welcome to world of Japanese consoles!
Never had one as a teen (I owned a Megadrive/Genesis), but got into retro collecting about a decade ago. The Gamecube (next to the Mega-CD) grew to be one of my favorite consoles out there. Such great titles.
i'm too young to have ever played or owned a gamecube, but the menu sounds and ambience are so goooooood omg
Speaking of Japan, which Japanese auction site did you get it from?
gonna be weird not seeing the classic MJD wall and table in your vids, but i can't wait to see more of this post-move!
Man I always wanted a GameCube, it’s ok though, the wii was my childhood game console

Wow that orange gamecube looks cool
I always did things a little different. My mates had Playstation, I had N64. Friends had PS2, I had Dreamcast. Buddies played XBOX, I had GameCube. No regrets. So many good memories. I miss the early 00’s 😢
I live in Taiwan, all of the game consoles here are Japanese hardware.
Next episode. Japanese PS2 from Taiwan.

Reviewing Japanese tech.

Today is a Japanese day! I just watched LGR video and he unboxed a Japanese Sony Vaio Laptop lol
Must be something in the water
Oh my god! You replied his comment
hi mjd im a big fan love your work keep up the amazing vids!
I honestly like this setup how it is
The console that defined my soul
i love gamecube. The best console ever
I am also moving within the next few months - from Germany (Schleswig-Holstein) to Sweden (Småland).
The store named in the manual is my favorite franchise back in old days (not the exact branch though)... I guess they bankrupted already unfortunately.
Electronic Bay
Holy crap, is that what the E stands for? How did I never realize this.
Since you're into homebrew, look into Swiss loader and GBI loader! gets a much better Picture quality for the GBA Player AND you dont need the CD
GameCube was such a great console
Best thing that could happen these days is Nintendo launching GameCube into Nintendo Switch Online like N64 before it.
I remember so well when I got mine and played pokemon on my 27 inch CRT Zenith. IT WAS SURREAL.
I'd love to see an MJD Vlog channel!
congrats on the new place!
I love clear tech but I'd also love to see that controller get cleaned back to it's original state lol
Great video, hope all goes easy while moving

still my fav. console!
Perfect film for me when waiting for fries to be done
Ah my favorite console! Just a shame the games cost so much nowadays
Damn this video have been uploaded in my birthday
Basically like putting a pirated disc into it, without a mod chip it refuses to read it. Basically importing the console back then was hard to get real copies but instead easier to get Rips burned to mini dads
If you don't use the accessory ports they serve as a hiding spot for snacks.
I didn't see any comments about this, but if I'm not mistaken, the timer isn't a play timer, it's just a literal timer, like you'd see on an oven.
Yeah that's what I meant, just a timer you can set to limit playtime

Awesome video, Michael!
This isn't related but will you be making a Steamdeck review?
I wonder when another episode of "Michael buys expensive things from Japan" will be released.
I’d kill for this bundle
I got the Hashin Tiger Limited edition that came with the Limited edition controller and Gamecube Player best $175 I spent back in 2017 🐍 😊
There are ways to make the GameBoy player work without a startup disc.
Noooo, guess we'll miss that wall!
weird to see that nothing went wrong this time hahaha
Clear GameCube controller is very yellowed!
Please make a part two. :)
There is an alternative start screen if you keep pressing the Z button before power on.
I'm surprised nothing goes wrong in this video
I would solder R6 under the heat sink after using a hairdryer to loosen it. Use a little thermal paste to put it back together and poof you have an American system now.
MattKC would be proud
Love the GameCube
the subtitles says "one of the things you could use it for was hookinh up a Game Boy Player." hookinh.
Very Awesome
Michael mjd sounds like Michael mjd
Waiting for Panasonic Q review
Love your content mjd I have watched like over 100 of your leanthy vids and you inspired me to do stuff with computers and use some vintage technology myself keep up the good work
dead easy to mod a GC btw and get mini DVDs if you need to burn a copy of the GB Player disc... or run Swiss
Will you try out Game Boy Interface and Swiss with the Gamecube?
I been trying to get the clear gamecube official controller for ever. Please let me know if your willing to talk about it.
what will the classic wood table with white wall become after moving?
video release around 9:00 AM
Any idea to make a video related to the Nanami Madobe(Windows 7 Anime Disc)? I'm really excited to see a video about that.
1 Japanese import product I purchased 2 of actually equalled 1 of the same US product here in the states and that is the smash bros ultimate gamecube controller
Definitely soft mod for open regions
Where have I heard the news about you moving and missing your Game Boy games before?

GameCube is cool
nice cube
I'm wondering when he will do a review of his MacBook pro

It’s hard because it only plays Japanese games.. unless it’s region unlocked
I think you have to do something internal to change the region
There is a pretty simple hardware mod you can do. I almost went that route but then I found this for sale.
Where’s the compaq portable?
unbox DS Lite please
Everyone is Welcome Here!
which is the web site you have used to buy this?
:O wow thats incredible
I use Buyee for things like this
No one mentioned this, not that it actually matters, but i believe the date format was year/day/month .. 2017/11/4 . . . Or am i wrong? Lol
Just desolder the resistor that is in R5 and solder it in R6 ( USA)
Almost went that route, but decided to buy this when I found the listing.
whats going on. Lots of youtubers seem to be moving now
1:39 that's not always true... I found Animal Forest e+ for only around $27 or $30 with the case! while the U.S. Game (which I own) Is about $50 without the case.
If you want to do more videos with the Gamecube please fix the 4x3 stretch
Nice!
Nice video!
Really Nice :D
so cool
any examples of these japanese websites?
