The velvet ropes to keep parishioners at bay are hilarious.
This Methodist minister and his velvet rope has been replaced by evangelical preachers calling airplanes "tubes filled with demons" and justifying their private jets by claiming their flock won't leave them alone of they fly commercial.
@@CanItAlready ???????
@@HisWordisLife4U What?
@@CanItAlready I have never heard of what you are talking about. No one says planes are full of demons...how silly.
@@HisWordisLife4U No one who's sane says that. Prosperity Gospel preacher Kenneth Copeland did say it.
goodfaithmedia.org/beware-the-tube-of-demons/
There's video of his conversation on UA-cam. There's also video of him trying to destroying covid-19 by telling at it. And this guy has a large following.
The invisible violin is priceless
Nolan Knight that part made laugh out loud!

“Away with you” - hilarious
When I was a kid out of high school I met a priest who said that " Away with you" remark after having a few words. He was burnt out and unhappy with the parish and the people. I later (years later) found out he died an alcoholic and removed from his order and position.
John Lithgow is brilliant
Totally brilliant.
Amen!
👎👎👎
I work a a private college with a cool performing arts center that hosts interesting speakers and performances. I'll go over there after work and they will slide me in for free and sometimes after the show I've met people. A few years ago John Lithgow was speaking but I didn't find out until it was too late. I was really bummed. Now I look at the entire schedule at the beginning of the year. This year I actually had a ticket to Drum Tao the Japanese drum and dance ensemble but.. you know...frickin Covid canceled that. Cheers happy holidays to everyone!
Always loved the guy
“Of course . . they’re cattle” 🤣
Victoria must've been a little cold 😂
He even took dance away from the town. What a meanie!
I looooove John Lithgow. He is extraordinary :-) awesome actor and fantastic comedian
Indeed he is. His facial expressions are hilarious too
Lithgow is sheer genius, the consummate actor. I've enjoyed every one of his movies and the series 3rd Planet from the sun. It may be along time before we see another of his like! Thanks John, when I'm blue I look for your comic talent. You also play a fascinating dark side in "Something evil this way comes"
I had a seizure reading "3rd Planet from the sun"
3rd Rock…. But yeah, he’s a legend ❤️
Was that Dana Carvey in there???
It's always weird to me when people comment on videos as though they're talking to the people in them. I love John Lithgow too (he was AMAZING as the Trinity Killer in Dexter) but honey, he's never going to read this. You might as well write him a letter and burn it.
Buckaroo banzai/ world according to Garp
As clergy I can relate to this sketch. Sometimes it feels like you have to be social worker, psychologist, marriage counsellor, and friend all at the same time.
As a baptist is this true? 🤔
Who else want's this to become a real tv series
Absolutely.
It would have been great.
Here in U.K. we have a series called Doc Martin which is s about an unspeakably rude doctor.
A rip roaring success!!
Or anything with John Lithgow
Shouldn’t he be a Baptist? Methodism is too liberal to be that mean.
I guess no one pitched it to JL back then, even now it'll be hilarious. It'd be like Father Ted on steroids.
It’s called The new pope
I used to know a family who were Methodists. They were super condescending and arrogant. Lithgow really captured the vibe.
The Methodist of the John Wesley days were not like that. Today's Methodist Church is Roman Catholic Lite.
Ignorant. The word is ignorant, applies to all religious fanatics
@@mdb831 But who pays attention to such things?
Dana Carvey doing his best Rick Moranis impression.
I see a bit of Dick Solomon coming through
I am five years to late. However I agree with your statement. There is a lot of Dick Soloman in this character!
I see more of a Shaw Moore....I was waiting for Lori Singer and Kevin Bacon to cut footloose.
Omg this is basically if The Big Giant Head gave Dick a new assignment where he had to be a minister.
@@thaddeuscramer2312
Impressed ... Excellent segue to a new series for Lithgow.
I had an alcoholic Presbyterian minister just about like this dude
He brought even small, throw-away roles to life.
IKR
Imagine him exorcising some demon. lol
thats kinda interesting but itll be looking like Hillary doing exorcising of Tramp, kinda Donald was obsessed buy Russian spirit. Like the Konstantine - Trumpstantine.
Priest: "Puuuuuuuhleeeeease! Wasn't there any other invalid, crippled, unsophisticated, imbecilic carcass in another far far away parish for you to possess? I would normally exorcise you back to hell but I simply don't have the time to waste for the likes of you."
Trump: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe, if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her."
Priest: "✟ BEGONE FOUL ABOMINATION!!!! ✟"
@@celestus87 Typical dumbfuck demonrat. Can't even have 1 video without the left spoiling it with political crap. You must be a very boring sadsack.
How did this become political?
The demon would go peacefully.
Lithgow would have been a great as the Narrator in Rocky Horror
OH MY GOD, YES!!!!!!!!
I wish he had said at the end:
“Rose... I don’t know what to say... wait, yes I do. PUHLEASE!”
Yeah not the strongest ending hehe
This would work great as a British show
Not really. The British would make it wacky and surreal. Their humor isn't very subtle.
All I hear is lord farquaad
Patrice Hyacinth Galotera I know right!
Except for the giant Last Supper print, more like the Episcopal clergy of yesteryear than a Methodist -- especially with the accent and dog collar. Love the rope line.
I loved 3rd rock from the sun, they where all great in that show.
would have been funnier if Dana Carvey had showed up as the Church Lady instead
Perfect missed opportunity!!!!
Yes, wouldn't that have been special?
WELL ISN'T THAT SPECIALLLLLL?????!!!!! LOL
@@scottweeks6379 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In-DEEED!
He's really more of a blue stocking Episcopalian than a Methodist.
Am Episcopal priest. Can confirm.
There are high church Methodist parishes that resemble a low church Episcopal Church service...
Hahaha, - look at the rope line to keep people away!
LITHGOW IS PERFECT FOR THIS.
Love the red velvet rope
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is way too hilariously accurate.
Who is playing Rose?
He also played a minister in Foot Loose.
That married couple, brings up two good points😄
Noooow I get it
LOVE JOHN he’s so hilarious and talented!!!😅😂🤣😆
This guy reminds me of my Organic Chemistry professor
We actually had a priest like this. Pretty spot on.
What did your Parish Council do about it?
@@bgraham928 He always abused us in his sermons during Easter and Christmas. "WELL, WELL...I see the church is standing room only today....HOW DARE YOU ALL?!!!"
He got "relocated". Lol
@@harlowblackadder356 Just asking, was your priest Catholic or Orthodox?
@@bgraham928 Catholic. Why do you ask?
@@harlowblackadder356 I'm Orthodox. If our church ever has a priest who behaved like that, our parish council would have discussions and talks with the priest. If that did not solve the problem, a letter would be forwarded to the Bishop of the Archdiocese. Since your Catholic I was just curious about what your church's course of action was.
He's not so far removed from Dean Ernest Gordon of Princeton University in the 70s... although He was a Presbyterian, most definitely not a Methodist
OMG he sounds like a Monty Python character!
One of the best all around episodes in the history of the show
Jim Carry should play the minister part sometime, he did a good skit for the show "In Living Color"
That would be so awesome!
Well, he did play Jimmy Swaggart and one of his recurring characters was a televangelist.
Not only JL is great but it's lovely they didn't take out that bit where he hiccups a little and backtracks it
So funny
Nora Dunn is also fantastic as the secretary.
Vicki. I missed her . and Dick Solomon also.
🤣🤣🤣 he’s the best 🤣🤣🤣
God bless Rev Henderson!
him raising eye brows is just😂
I love Victoria in this skit
I broke at "butthole".... the violin had me cracking but honestly, "butthole" broke me.
Also... Rose looking kinda "Aw hell yeah!" good!
Apparently it was cold in the studio that night.
playground insults
church lady vs. dis minister
As a minister of the Gospel. I recognized the importance of the institution of marriage. However I must tell you it is not a subject which interest me. Begone! LMFAO!!!!!!!
He got social distancing right
3:33 they found out God doesn't have financial issues LMFAO
JL will go down as one of our finest actors EVER!
Cool synth sound .
That keyboard intro, awesome
John Is so amazing . Where has he been?
This would be excellent for PBS type comedies from England.
Headlights are on
OMG He was gorgeous!
Was?! Pfft, he could still get it 🥰
I’m starting to realize that a lot of sketches from the late 80’s-early 90’s are an episode of some fake TV show. Like A LOT. It’s like a crutch they used to end sketches.
I see what you mean. Some of those sketches might have been ones that they intended to be recurring. Didn’t Lothar and ‘It’s Pat’ kinda have the tv show opening? That might’ve helped with how memorable the skits would be for viewers and how quickly they became popular and kept viewers coming back. This one, though, might be like that to mimic the name-occupation tv show title trend then: Walker, Texas Ranger, Dr.Quinn, Medicine Woman, Magnum, P.I. etc. I think the sort of uniformity that television had then as compared with today’s shows lent itself to writing sketches that could be relevant without sacrificing as much creativity, sketches that didn’t have to be written as just a parody of one show in particular. I don’t watch a lot of newer SNL, but from what I’ve seen, I think they do quite a bit more skits parodying particular shows, which I think makes those skits less creative and less funny. I don’t think you’re wrong in calling it 80-90s crutch but maybe all the reasons for it aren’t as apparent as they were back then. And it seems like it was probably a more effective crutch than what they’re working with nowadays.
3:53 NOT A SINGLE LAUGH and that was the funniest part...
this a brilliant sketch
He should’ve had the church lady on that skit
My father was a Methodist Minister. Although he was the complete opposite of this character, he would have absolutely loved this skit!
This guy is my daughter's ex father in law. Period.
Hahahaha
Must be a reason he's an ex 🤣😂
John Lithgow. Seeing him just reminds me that they are making another season of Dexter.
Please don’t make it as awful as season 8!!
Please spare me!😂😂😂😂
This is exactly how I felt when I were a manager. Oh boy this is so good🤩
MARY GROSS MY SECRET CRUSH...
The pastor from footloose!
"'Your grotesque family"'. 2022 Trump should become a minister. Because he looks like he would fit right in.
Great skit. Back in the days when they didn't just read off cue cards and actually acted with each other
They were still reading cue cards, and they are still acting. Things weren't better just cause you were younger and not as bitter
@@kevinbissinger I think your definition of acting is different than mine. And I wasn't bitter. Just stating my opinion. For years now they literally do every skit while practically staring at the cue cards instead of talking to each other face to face. They glance at each other occasionally but only at the end of a phrase or sentence. In the earlier years, either they memorized the scripts or freestyled it most of the time because they face each other when they're talking and there's many fewer awkward pauses in which someone doesn't know their lines. Again, not bitter. Just pointing out differences. That's not to the current SNL actors aren't good because some of them are good. Just wish the cue cards would go away.
they always used cue cards. they've used the same process for cue cards for decades.
Reading of the cards seemed less obvious back in the early days.
This was fantastic and hilarious
I laughed at the title....YES PLEASE!
I'm a methodist and I don't know any methodist ministers that act as mean as Lithgow did in this sketch. John Wesley would be turning over in his grave.
and laughing
I never knew any Methodist preachers that acts like this, either.
I forgot what a brilliant dark comedic actor this guy was.... What's his name??
He had a show...
John Lithgow. Third rock from the sun
check out Raising Cain ...he is good in that movie
Yes of course he was FIRED. New job: Dog Priest hearing Confession.
The dog confession is a REALLY great sketch though, isn't it?
Best snl skit ever. :D
That's vikki dupcheck
The velvet rope...😆
Hey I am methodist and this is just 1 percent could be shown on TV
Hes so funny. Loved him in Third Rock from the Sun.
One of their best.
This talented fruit went on to play M. Butterfly.
Trinity had so many hats
SNL sketches back in the days were well crafted mini-plays.
It’s just crappy easy laughs now.
the eyebrow after "butt hole" :))))
No bra? That's how to go to meet a man of god
probably had something to do with a time restricted costume change
Amen.
I remember this actress from the 80’s , if memory serves right, I think she went braless quite a bit
@@nancygemeinhardt8701 Are we talking about Victoria Jackson?
@@cedk144 yes, I thought so, maybe I’m mistaken ? . . I didn’t mean as an insult , I think she’s beautiful !! Loved her on SNL.
At first glance at the thumbnail for this video, I could have swore this was a Chris Parnell sketch!
@1:34 Must be cold in there. ;)
Reverend Henderson sings more like an Episcopal priests rather than a Methodist minister. I don't necessarily mean the rude tone but the demeanor...
Why isn't John Lithgow didn't anything anymore??
He has trumpty dumpty on youtube. Pretty halorious
He was Winston Churchill on The Crown
With a grain of salt a very big grain of salt
yours very truly Alfonso Cantu USMC
Is John Lithgow's performance an example of Methodist acting?
Sheldon Cooper as a minister
He's so sensitive! 🤣
I wanna be his friend lol
The years when SNL was refined and every joke wasn't a potty joke. A little more wholesome.
Yes, and also when you couldn’t tell if they were reading from cue cards or not. It’s painfully obvious with recent SNL casts and I just can’t watch any of those shows.
farts. needs farts
Trust me. They ALL secretly feel that way.
Naw, don’t think I trust you.
I think Sheldon from BBT got his personality from this character
I agree
"Of course...their cattle"
I couldn't stop staring at Victoria Jackson's cherry covered flapjacks in that yellow sweater.
