This entire parody is brilliant and so very well written and delivered. None of it is “too much”. Being quite believable then when it starts to veer to absurd it pulls right back to a replication of the famous talk show then moves again to punchlines and character parodies and types. In the end it smoothly feels like you have just watched the Phil Donahue show. But you haven’t. You just watched some serious SNL cast talent back in the day.

Kevin Nealon struggled to get his lines right, and sometimes botched it. Also, he wasn't cut out for Weekend Update after Dennis Miller and it showed. But when he got it right, like in this sketch, it was pretty good.

The men and women who worked with Phil Hartman on SNL had an apropos nickname for him: "The Glue," because, according to Mike Myers on 'Inside the Actor's Studio,' Phil held the show together. I've never read a bad word about Phil; he was one of those beloved celebrities like Al Yankovic or Fred Rogers. He was one of those people you'd save from his fate if you had a time machine. Miss you, Phil.

I recently read about how Phil Hartman put in a lot of time preparing for these skits and it shows. There’s no looking at cue cards or breaking character laughing. Far superior show then later years. He’s like the anti Jimmy Fallon. So entertaining and his work lives on as does Jan Hooks’ also brilliant.

I haven't watched with any regularity in YEARS, admittedly. But seeing more recent skits on youtube and looking at comments, it almost seems like some people think it's some sort of achievement to constantly break character. Part of the humor is acting this ridiculous while playing it straight. Phil Hartman was a master at totally absurd characters played completely straight.
