You set your sights high and sacrificed to get to this moment & no matter if La Douleur Exquise is first of three or the first of 50 fragrances of Les Abstraits you should be very proud of this creation. I hope you give yourself the time to physically and mentally take in this moment and enjoy every single second as you know it goes quick. Bask in the sunlight before getting back to work on making Les Abstraits a brand known throughout the world 🌞
I just got my bottle yesterday. I gotta say your description is so brilliantly accurate. What an extraordinary leap into perfumery for Eugen 💪🏼

Great review Ramsey! I love perfumery as conceptual art and sounds like Eugen and Antoinne really put so much heart and time into this. The comparables you mentioned are all beautiful fragrances that I wear. Imitation Man is an overlooked gem, very classy. Hope to get a bottle of this soon.

Ram, i received my sample pack from Eugen today. I get the Imitation Man comparison much more than the Portrait of a Lady comp, though I see both. This is truly beautiful. It makes me look at my collection (past and present) and makes me regret all of the trash and mid perfumes I’ve bought but also so thrilled for the future of (independent) perfumery. This is absolutely beautiful and no question full-bottle worthy. Well done, Eugen!

Nice review. I just received my bottle today and my first impressions are similar to yours. In addition to the wonderful rose, I really was hit by the antaeus vibe with the castoreum/myhrr combo in the base. I also really like the spicy incense vibe from the clove, saffron, cedar, oppoponax and frankincense.
It is a fantastic fragrance... has quickly become my favorite rose / patch fragrance and the castoreum in the dry down is out of this world 🤌🤌🤌

I am ecstatic to say.I get a strong COCO edp "vibe" with Douleur...Not sure why or how but, my nose and brain are definitely on to something, I strongly believe.
I have been frequently sniffing them together ( Mr. COCO, lol). It is almost impossible for me to like a perfume as much as the CHANEL but, let's wait and see! Re: quality and craftsmanship, I think he knocked it out of the park.

Great review, Sir. It's very easy to compare it to Portrait Of A Lady, but when I try them side by side, I really don't get any significant connection. Love and own Imitation Man, which comes across "brighter" than La Douleur Exquise, which shouldn't be a surprise given the "douleur." Beautiful composition by Antoine and Eugen.

I agree completely about the opening, there are no sparkling top notes its just straight into this sensory overload and you're thinking where is this going to go.
The first wear or two I was kind of wished it would have a bit more in your face wow-factor (maybe even dirtier and richer) but I think in the end the restraint probably means it is a lot classier and more wearable.
I finished the sample Rich sent and ever since I've been really wanting to wear it again.
Its totally full bottle worthy 🍼
Have thoroughly enjoyed wearing it all day today .. will try and pick up a bottle soon although I must say I am stoked to try the other two!
I don't blind buy bottles anymore for quite sometime so I skipped the EU offer. Want to sample it though.

Great review. I managed to sample it at Max Fragrance, jagged rose is a very apt description. I'm not that familiar with castoreum but I do get that animalic vibe in the dry down.

Man I haven't worn Antaeus in ages. Great impressions here Ramsey. Never was that big a fan of POAL on my skin, so there's no question that LDE would work better for me. 🌹 Material quality should be what this comm is all about. 💎

I wouldn't say its just artistic. I would say perfume lovers will love it and regular perfume wearers will connect to it as well. My wife wore this 1st day I had the bottle in she had 3 compliment on 1st wearing. I wore it my self and I love it.

I have a bottle already that I got on the presale. Is it unpopular to say this reminds you of POAL. I dnt no why it would be. That's a master piece after all. I personally do get a similarity. I just find this to be more wearable in every day situations. Rain or shine this stuff is great. Looking forward to trying it out in the colder weather too.
Ahhh yes great point about the weather...although I have to say I personally now wear any fragrance I want anytime any place.. but different weather will bring out different aspects of a fragrance & castoreum in particular is one of those notes that brings this leathery warmth in the cold.. I am sure it will shine🥶🌹
Yep , I knew it would be on a to buy list for you, I think it’s a perfectly blended all weather,any time ,any event any season fragrance that behaves beautifully and never becomes overly linear and annoying in the dry down,as I feel POAL is and outside of similar notes in both Doulier is far more wearable for pretty much everyone in every situation. It can be applied liberally and not choke out the wearer ,nor anyone in close proximity. You cannot say that for the Fredrick Malle. It’s a damn good rose and The animalic should not scare anyone it’s a pussycat who purrs.great review fella 🙏👍😝

@@RamseytheRam exactly,beavers are slobs haha, I get your Imitation man comparison for sure,minus the vinyl vibe of course,but the common notes are done so well and harmoniously in both, and behave so well on skin and in the air, beautiful first release, no pressure on the rest then lol 😝
Interesting to me the juxtaposition of clean rose worn at his wedding (one of the Malle’s… can’t remember if it was Lipstick or Une) to this one. Really looking forward to this release

Your description of La Douleir reminded me of Tori Amos’ song: Jagged Little Pill”. To me Exquisite Pain is being with someone you love and He/She doesn’t love “you”any longer. So you try making it again, and it still doesn’t work, but you are addicted to each other. Yes. a Rose is a Rose, is a Rose! I will not go into “Exquisite Pain”, because I can only think of one thing that could be the cause of that. But I could say that Iris and Rose are my favorite florals.
There is definately some heartbreak in this fragrance ... some experience behind those eyes if you will... if you get a chance to sniff or own a bottle do report back and let me know what you thing Phyllis 🥂
Amouage was once a House that housed some of the most exquisite fragrances of all time.
Yeah it is sad to see what is happening to them, i have a decant of their newest offering they are hyping... this Royal Tobacco... I will do a video on it in a few months when the weather cools down👑 🚬

I honestly don't get the portrait of a lady comparisons and I'm very familiar with POAL 🤷♂️ I will say this, Eugen has managed to come up with a really beautiful fragrance that I drawn comparisons to anything I know personally.
