      In two of the three weapons (foil and sabre), there are "right of way" rules, which means that if both fencers make contact, the point can go either way depending on who had the right of way (short version: if you are being attacked, you have to defend yourself first before you can attack back). In foil, it causes some problems, but it is a mess in sabre because it happens so incredibly fast and it is very difficult to not get hit if your opponent commits to attacking. This encourages both fencers to be hyper-aggressive in attacking as starting your attack first gives you the right of way. This leads to a LOT of cases of "both electronic lights are on, so the judge has to determine who had right of way"...and a lot of bad (or maybe corrupt?) refereeing.

    • @M3ANIAC
      @M3ANIAC 5 місяців тому +5

      @abdulkarimelnaas7595that’s not the problem, they use electricity it’s incredibly fast, right of way exists on purpose there are designed time windows for it to be allowed

    • @Myrr21
      @Myrr21 5 місяців тому +17

      @abdulkarimelnaas7595 This issue is that it's not about who *hits* first; it's about who had the right to be attacking at that moment. If I start my attack first, you make no attempt to stop me and hit me, and I continue through and hit you, I get the point even though you hit me first, because I had the right of way. On the other hand, if I start attacking first and you parry my attack and hit me back (or I hesitate and briefly stop my attack and you hit me), and I continue on and hit you, it is your point because I lost the right of way.
      That's where the judgement comes into it--who started first and was there a pause or a parry or similar--and you can't solve that with electronics. It would need a fundamental change in the basic rules of the sport.
      Note that epee does not have right of way rules. If we both hit each other within a certain time frame (the electronics intentionally have a window of time after the first hit where a second is allowed to go through), both of us get a point.

    2:27 Surprise, Surprise. Coach: Tarantino. Arguably the most reprehensible "sportsman" of Sabre 2 generations ago, followed only by his successor, Ochiuzzi, who holds that title for Sabre 1 generation ago. Alshamlan may be a disgrace, but he is hardly "alone", nor the root of the problem, just a symptom. Reflection of the weakness of the institution and still prevalent vulnerability to bribery and coercion - the latter being an important focal point. I think it would be remiss to say all of these referees are corrupt at the core, but I can only imagine what pressures both for gain / or for consequence, they are under, for a position that is criminally under-compensated to start. It may extend to their federations and private businesses. This is a deep cancer that will not be solved by sacking a few individuals, but may require intervention of the highest level...
    Or we could, y'know, just boycott International Sabre - let it go to hell and be the sport of cheaters. Sad stuff. Thanks for your work.

      Epee is absolutely still sword fighting. Foil and sabre can be sometimes, but just as often it simply lacks soul.
      I mean, whenever you make something a sport, you have to create rules and gamify it to allow scoring, and a good deal of the character of the original thing will be lost. As more rules get added, and players find ways to exploit the rules, more of that character gets lost. I still love it regardless, but epee is my favourite because it's most similar to its inspiration (first-blood fencing).

    I remember back in the 90s, American sabre fencers were nowhere, but our referees were considered honest, incorruptible. Maybe because they didn't need the money, maybe because we take Good Sportsmanship seriously. Either way, if two coaches couldn't agree on a referee (because they each knew which way the favoritism would go), they would settle on an American.

    As someone who has never fenced, this looks like jousting

    • @raise_the_black_flag
      @raise_the_black_flag Місяць тому

      Interestingly, that's a feature, not a bug. The three fencing weapons (foil, epee, and sabre) are each inspired by a different way of swordfighting from European history.
      Foil is inspired by to-the-death fencing; it's a stabbing-only weapon, as honor duels were historically, and only hits that land on the torso (including groin) or throat score a point (there's also a "priority" system in foil and sabre that establishes whose hit counts if they both land a hit- it's not relevant to this discussion though).
      Epee is inspired by fencing to first blood, which is how duels were decided after fencing to the death was banned. It's also stabbing only, and since one would bleed anywhere they were stabbed, any hit on the body counts- from the top of the head to the tips of the toes.
      Now, back to your jousting comment- sabre is inspired by cavalry fencing, so it uniquely allows slashing as well as stabbing. Valid target area is from the waist up, including the arms and head- legs do not count, as you would hit the horse in the historical counterpart. Since it's VERY easy to land a slash compared to a stab, and the priority system means the initial aggressor gets the first "turn," much of sabre revolves around charging as quickly as possible to earn initial priority in the eyes of the judge, so when you and your opponent clash in the middle and slash each other, it's probably your point (unless you miss, your opponent blocks, or you mess up your attack by pausing or pulling your weapon back etc). Crossing of the legs is also a penalty, as that's something horses cannot do, which forces the fencers to use that signature sabre gallop. Which is why it looks like jousting. Astute observation. 🫡

    Can not really blame the man for abusing the rules and referees if they are faulty. Footballers do it all the time, even the best ones will fall to ground deliberately for dozens of times in a match to get a faul.
    However in leagues like English Premier, referees are not joking around and players do actually need to play to win instead of dropping themselves to the ground every 5 minutes.
    So change the referees and rules and protect referees from outside pressure, sport will be fixed

      It's as much of a sword duel as an Olympic karate competition is an actual martial arts fight. It's a sporting game inspired by sword duels.
      In order to make it into a sport, it had to be gamified, which means creating a scoring system, rules, standardized equipment, refereeing, etc.
      The two stabbing weapons have a minimum amount of force that the tip of the weapon has to hit with to register a hit. It's a button with a resistance spring. Sabre unfortunately can't be pressure-sensitive because the entire sword is conductive, so that you can slash with it and the electric system will still register a hit. Hope that helps.

      That's the problem with olympic fencing, first to make a point wins, even if it's by milliseconds. Often time you do both strike, it's determined by who did first. It's why in HEMA they use parrying daggers and have rules for double hits. Also alot of the historical methods try to strike without getting hit in return, because it makes no sense to charge recklessly in a fight.

    It is always the double standard. European players qualify = yes well deserved. A new star from Kuwait makes it to the Olympics = cheater and oil money. you using phrase "Oil money" in itself has a racist tone under it. It is like you're saying those players from gulf countries have no skills and no strategy when they play. He has spent a lot of money but on training and competing a lot abroad to make it to this level. The issue is the Saber referring itself because refs make their judgments differently and the smart player is the one who pays attention to what the referee count and what they don't.
    The other double standard is sports and politics. Russia vs Ukraine war = ban all Russian fencers. Isreal commits genocide on Palestinians = nah we don't wanna mix sports with politics

    • @carsontroeh127
      @carsontroeh127 6 місяців тому

      Obscenely dumb take. especially since russia has been banned from the olympics since 2015 due to the doping scandal, and has only been prolonged due to the invasion.
      never understand the outrageous victim mentality some people from non-western countries have. cheating is cheating; no matter if they're french, russian, german, azerbaijani, or kuwaiti. why should cheaters flagrantly get away with cheating just because they're brown lol. it's one thing for a ref to make a bad call, but making a bad call specifically in the favor of a single fencer exclusively when this particular fencer is fencing is beyond a "bad call"; it's collusion.

    • @provincialnotionpreference
      @provincialnotionpreference 6 місяців тому +16

      There will always be Europeans that qualify. The problem with Alshamlan's qualification isn't that people are assuming that he's a cheater, it's that he IS a cheater, and there is substantial evidence to back it up. If you even watched the video, you would realize that there are numerous examples of touches that were given to him that clearly weren't his. It's not unusual for referees to make one or two bad calls in a bout, but for MULTIPLE referees to make THIS MANY bad calls, and they all happen to be in the favour of Alshamlan? You don't have to be a genius to realize that something fishy is going on.
      No one is saying that fencers from gulf countries aren't skilled; talent can come from anywhere in the world. However, qualifying for the Olympics through countless bad calls in your favor hardly counts as qualifying at all.

    • @leftysabreuse3257
      @leftysabreuse3257 6 місяців тому +8

      And he has cheated so many talented fencers from the middle east too not to mention from all over Asia...I recall seeing a video of a talented Iraqi fencer losing a lot of touches to him when he shouldn't have. With certain Americans...it's much harder to prove because they themselves are not as blatant (they don't stop the bout afaik).

    • @Mo13Tube
      @Mo13Tube 6 місяців тому +5

      @@provincialnotionpreference "countless?" If you follow one player the whole time and collect bad calls in one video, it will seem like this player is favorited. He's practiced and went to countless tournaments and camps to be at this level. How many calls does he get every game and why? I watch saber. It is a controversial sport to begin with. Refs don't agree most of the time so you have to pay attention to what the ref count and what they don't unfortunately. You are giving a huge claim by saying he is a cheater without evidence. Like did he bribe a ref or something? Him getting bad calls isn't an evidence cuz all players get this. You only post the calls he got. Why don't you post the calls that were awarded to his opponents but they should have given to him? Also, if he is favorited this much, he will win every tournament but we don't see him on podiums during world cup tournaments. Using the word "oil money" us so offensive and indirectly saying that players from "rich" countries depend on the money instead of their skills.

So there was always an element of unfairness and bias in the Olympics. Both the USSR/Russia, USA, China and all of Western Europe have institutionalized doping and cheating programs to this day.
