- Could you mix coolant (antifreeze) colors, brands or technologies?? Find out why mixing it can be disastrous to your engine and cooling system. It can gelling in the cooling system and clog your radiator, water jacket, heater core and passages. It is important to not mix different antifreeze technologies. If the incorrect coolant is used, it is advised to flush the cooling system.

Thank you for the very good explanation. I've always been told to never mix colors, but seems like color is irrelevant. Just don't mix the technologies.
This video is the best explanation I've seen on antifreeze.
Very good and informative. Also make sure that the dealer and shop use the correct coolant when they top-off your coolant and don't mix incorrect antifreeze in your radiator.
Thank you, this is the best explanation I've found.
Great video, thanks for the individual protections and uses.
BASICALLY it was really good explanation😅 THANKS for your knowledge
Thank you bro, May Allah bless you and your family
Thank you so much for this information. It was very helpful 👍
bro i love the breakdown and chart hell yeah
Very interesting and helpful information.
Very good explanation, and helpful even for an old guy like me.
Great information! Well done sir.
I tell you, mechanics with foreign accents seem to be the best mechanics
Thanks Boss, this was very helpful
Thank you that was very educational!
Thank you so much for all information ....gracias
Good video as always. Thanks.
The main issue is the corrosion inhibitors from different types react and neutralize each other so you start getting a lot of corrosion.
Another problem that arises is that if you switch from one type of anti-freeze to another (complete drain and refill) is that all engines have some corrosion and dirt in them that's adhered strongly to the interior surfaces , when you change the type of corrosion inhibitors you are using ,all of the dirt can suddenly come free at once and clog up your radiator and heating core.
I run into this issue quite a bit with forklifts , the owner buys a used forklift and switchsd it over to green glycol so all of his forklifts use the same antifreeze , and a week later the radiator is clogged up with rust and sludge.
In my semi I definitely know there is a difference some end up breaking down quicker than others that's for sure I've done so much testing I have 2 trucks 1 has had the same coolant almost 15 years yes I've had to add some here and there and yes I add the minerals that it's lacking after I have it tested now my other truck man oh man I've thrown just about every kind of coolant in there that I can think of I had it so messed up and acidy a bunch of times that now no matter what I put in there it turns rust / mud red
Coolant and oil is sent out to get tested EVERY service I do
That what so informative. Much appreciated!
Likewise brother thanks for the very informative help I'm actually in the position right now stuck between a rock and a hard place somewhere is there any way you could help me right now as of 212 p.m. Thursday afternoon? I'd appreciate a big time couple questions
excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks for the helpful video.
Perfect explanation 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! This was very informative. Just to make sure, I have a 2020 Kia Rio. The OEM coolant that came in it has the color green. It is P-HOAT ethylene-glycol based coolant. I need to top off my reservoir, and the closest thing I found was Zerex long life for Asian Vehicles. It is also P-HOAT ethylene-glycol based, but the color is red. The video says that color is just a dye, but just wanted to confirm that this will cause no damage mixing the green stuff with the red?
I think the “main” in all of the automotive glycols is ethylene glycol. It’s the additives that are different. Prestone all makes all models says it can be mixed with any other coolant. I have a sneaking suspicion the main problem all along causing most of these horror stories is just dex-cool, people mixing stuff with it and it gelling, but the truth is even people getting a leak and it gets low and it gels up, without mixing it with anything. Just the thoughts going through my brain as I watch the vid.
Thank you very valuable info I caused a problem to my car by not knowing
Great video
Thank you!
In early 2002 F 150 used the old green coolant, but changed to yellow later in 2002.
So if two coolant are different colors but have same technology (e.g: ethelyn glycol) i can mix those 2 right? but if one has silicate it cant?
Do they make a test strip to test if they were mix or to identify OAT and IAT.
I use Preston in a yellow container in my 2003 BMW Z4 and it says it’s safe for all vehicles, oat, iat, poat and hoat . Am I ok using it?
Thanks
Thank you for your presentation. This always confused me.
Bro Best! Simple. All
Idk what my dealer uses in my 06 CRV. Can I add Long Mile Honda coolant? Simple question. Please help.
I have an 2014 Infiniti G37 s coupe. I had my radiator replaced, and now I need to top off my coolant reservoir. I’m not sure what coolant they used, and it’s at the Min. Line. It looks bright green I called and asked the shop what coolant to use and someone advised me to get Prestone all vehicle coolant. For my sense of comfort and peace of mind can you confirm this is ok to do please? I plan on flushing it and going with OEM Nissan blue coolant, but have a long drive before I can do so.
I have Hyndai Santa Fe 2009. Green coolant. I have not changed it for 10 years. The fluid looked always bright green and no speck of inpurity. But too old to stay in the system.
I went to Hyndai dealership and picked up Hyndai original brand coolant that is for my car. Also green in color. I backed up car on 1 foot high ramp to lower the front. I drained old staff. Took a sample bottle. It appeared somewhat transparent bright green and no particles.
I flushed the car with tap hot water. Drained it 2 times. Let the car run 15 minutes with heater at max speed and heat. Drained it again. The water was clear but maybe slight hue of green. I used an air pressure to empty overflow tank into the top of radiator. I rinsed again with bottled distilled water through the overflow tank. Let it run a bit and drained it.
Then I added 1L concentraded coolant into the radiator. I added 0.8L of deionized water. It was full. I let the car work 20min with heater and AC on. No top up needed. I took for a slow ride around the block. Looked at fluid and it had a hint of foam (2-3 creamy bubbles). I took for 20min drive to work. The radiator cap appeared to have plenty of yellow (curry) light foam. I wiped it off. The fluid itself looks green but not as transparent. It has tiny white specks as deep as I can see. Not on surface. I looked inside the overflow tank and it looks very clean bright green with no issues but a hint of rainbowy oily surface. Perhaps from the coolant itself.
1) Did I not suppose to pour concetrate into radiator but do it mixing in the overflow tank? Hence concentrate got foamy as it was blended by the water pump?
2) Could have green previous fluid reacted with green new fluid? And this is the effect of gelling up?
3) Could the new fluid act as a wash and pick up dirt/rust from the inside? 10 years worth of stuff. I believe its an alluminum block.
4) maybe air pressure blown into radiator cap created a hole in the block or transmission where oil is now getting mixed with coolant?
5) Other possibily?
I will right away flush it with tap water in case its the jelling up process. What steps you think I should do?
I'm not sure what type is in my 1999 jamboree GT E450 Super Duty RV. Can l just add water in case it needs to cool. Rv is not having a problem but I just want to be prepared since l am going on a 400 mile drive.
My 2021 Triumph Tiger 850 motorcycle originally came filled with the Triumph HD4X coolant, which is of the HOAT type. The HD4X was standard across the entire range of Triumph models. This year, Triumph has phased it out in favour of the Triumph D2053 coolant, which is of the OAT variety. They cannot be mixed - a complete flush of the entire cooling system must be done before the D2035 can be used.
Why would Triumph do this?
Newer Asian cars require silicate free HOAT. Go for prestone or zerex asian car formulas if you have a Japanese or Korean brand. In contrast European cars need silicated HOAT.
Prestone all makes and models good ?
Why? Can you answer that? Why do newer Japanese cars NEEEED silicate free coolants, and why do European cars NEEEEED silicate-based coolants
Thank you brother
I should have watched your video before reading dozens or articles😀
so white dirty thingy can be mixed coolants?
Brand new motorcycle and fluid level was below min. so I added random coolant and later found bad things under radiator cap.
Which one does my Nissan sentra 2022 need ? It has green coolant and it's under level
Is there any test which can tell me which technology is in my car? It would have been Dexcool when the car was new but I bought it used and I don't know if the current orange coolant is Dex or the new stuff which is also orange.
What about Preston All makes and model for Toyota?
cool content
Transparent too
it's obvious not using OAT on IAT but is it suitable to flush the cooling system that uses ITA then adding HOAT?
which brand is the best for very hot weather?
Ur videos are great, i have a question iv always used dexkool on my chevy truck, is it okay to use prime guard brand 50/50 prediluted anti freeze coolant for all vehicles my truck year is a 2006 silverado
My coolant colour is PINK.
Ethylene glycol is written on the coolant container.
But, in your table, Pink color falls under HOAT.
Now, i am confused whether my coolant is IAT or HOAT? Does HOAT contain ethylene glycol? Obviously OAT is propylene glycol. Then what is HOAT?
Can we identify the technology type by the colour of the coolant? Please make new video about this.
So if my car has pink coolant can I use purple to top it off?
I'm confused. I have a 2006 Hyundai Azera, bought from the second owner. the first owner filled in yellow antifreeze, but almost everyone tells me that I need green, some say yellow
👍
What about all the honda and toyota aluminum engines before 2000? They all used the common yellow antifreeze, never saw any jelling or deterioration.
Ur wrong completely
@@coltonzelkin2694 That's ignorant, how can you say I'm wrong about what I didn't see. It says use on any engine, so what did Honda change in the metal too in the early 2000's to need a different antifreeze. They're just selling dye for twice the price.
Bro I added blue coolant and it turnt orange. I don’t know if that’s good cause my coolant was literally empty. I hope I’ll get a response soon ❤️
Maybe flush it out and use the correct coolant for your vehicle.
What tech is autozone extended life coolant
Hi want quick question what if you mix OAT and HOAT ? It will be fine?
You can use OAT in a HOAT system but can't use HOAT in an OAT system.
What are your thoughts on this scenario :
I bought HOAT mixed it 25% with water as per bottle instructions. Added about 200ml to my OAT system as a top up. Am at risk of gel or will it be OK?
Hey what happened ? Asking a month later hopefully it went okay with u I think I finally found someone ( you ) in-which whom is in thee same exact or very similarsituation I am currently in .....
@@graemecrawford1639
They all use aluminium radiators so why protect the engine leaving the block in phosphate base coolants?
How about same technology for example oat. Using different brands together? Thx
Different brand same technology is fine
@@Top5AutoRepairssame technology, but different colors? Can we mix it?
HELP ME....I have a 2015 Honda CRV , I added Prestone, green, a little to my coolant resovoir, and it was too late when I noticed it had blue coolant in it....Am I okay?
You're fine. Don't worry about it.
@@Top5AutoRepairs Thank you sir, you wouldn't believe the automotive people told me I needed to flush my radiator out. Going with you....thanks. Might do a video on this.
So two different brands or colors can be mixed IF you know they are both the same type (IAT, OAT, HOAT)?
I just ask because I found cooking that is OAT but is a somewhat yellow color. My car is a 2019 and needs that but, the existing coolant is pink or orange looking.
Sorry I know this is a dumb question, I heard from a store person saying you can mix universal coolant with any other coloured coolant, is it true? I just want to make sure thanks.
In some ways.
Surely PRESTONE all vehicles coolant can be mixed with any of the older technologies as the manufacturer guarantees it mixes with everything
So if u can't mix them together what's the point for HOAT isn't it mixed?🤔
Hoat is the most balanced coolant. You can top it off a little bit of anything. Thats why the answer is yes and a no if incase of emergency. But regarding dye color it doesnt matter will look sht long term though. Been using different color same technology flush it properly
i have been using water all my life.
No good idea...
Toyota?if use in VW ..u can say to radiator
Sayonara
Can't go wrong with some good Ol' H2O.
One of my brother in laws is a mobile mechanic. When he changes people's radiators he fills them with straight garden hose water.
Too far off in the weeds for the layman...
Would mixing peak blue asian with peak blue european be a terrible idea?
Pretty sure they are different
Are they the same technology. ie OAT or HOAT or IAT...
Bruh, You answered my question...🫡
But, you DIDN'T answer my question...🤔
