You’re awesome, thanks so much for all the work you do and all the knowledge you share. I wish I had you as a teacher when I was younger...I also wish we could co-teach! Question about assessing, how do you find the time to jot all of this down each class when you’re instructing and managing?? That’s what I’m struggling with the most.
Appreciate it! I normally have my clipboard with me as I teach or at least nearby, so as I observe things, or hand out consequences I just pick it up and make a note and continue. It's gotten easier the longer I've taught bc I know my kids better, I know my curriculum better and so it gives me more mind space to take notes and observations. I definitely didn't take as many notes or record as much data in the beginning when I was just trying to figure out how to teach, but having the data makes doing grades and giving feedback on report cards really nice. Also, somedays with a great class I might go for a whole class without taking any notes until the end and just give everyone a big smiley face down the entire list - it really just depends on the class and what we're doing that day
Awesome, thanks for sharing. Try to do similar things myself, but like your report card grades, distilling all that data into 1 grade is problematic and difficult for anyone but the teacher to interpret. The alternative several scores on the RC also has its problems when numbers of students is large and limited time in class. What are your thoughts on no score for PE in the scenario of 1 score, nothing for PE on the RC?
No grades sounds like a dream job to me bc of all the time I would save 😂 but I definitely think providing grades gives our subject validity and provides parents with important feedback on where their kids are - it's hard when you only see them 9x in a grading period though, you just have to pick 1-2 things to focus on and assess. Another solution would be giving kids more PE time, if I saw my kids more often I would feel better about providing grades I think
Great content, as usual. Just a clarification though. When you talk about behaviour (e.g, talks without permission), you use that content when you meet the parents but you are not using that to assess the student, correct?
Depends on the grade level, in K-2nd part of our GLO standards that. are on the report card are things. like "safely follows class expectations" or "participates in activities" so in that case it would be assessed, in my 3-5th grades I usually don't worry about in regards to grades unless the student is being a disruption to the point where they have to sit out of the activities that we are doing
I'm also following SHAPE standards and I was not able to figure out where you would fit that. "Follows safely class directions" is more a social and emotional standard and you are not just assessing behaviors. I understand more what you meant in your video. Thanks to your reply.
Your video shows fantastic ways to assess and collect data, but how do you convert all of that data into the final 9 weeks grade? What would constitute a M, P, or U?
I wondering if you give the students time to practice the skills over a certain period of time before you test the students. I personally teach my students around 6 periods before assessing their skills which gives them time to progress and achieve the goals that were set for any specific activity.
For sure, depending on the assessment I like to do a pretest or self assessment if possible to let kids see where they're at and then after the unit of instruction usually 3-5 lessons depending on the unit we do a postest and hopefully have improved during the unit
Hello Ben, I am new to this Job, I am starting a program soon, but before I do this, I must pass a practical assessment in which I have to delivery a 20/30 minutes session to a group of pupils, I have to plan for a session of that length, but I got lost at this point. Do you have any tip or any suggestions for me in order to plan a successful session?
Check out my resources page on the website. Cross the River, Hula Hut Relays, Striking Balloons with Implements would all be good ones for that sceanario
Ben, Thank you very much for this video. On your sample grading sheet, you only had one detail filled in for each of the students. If one of your students had multiple issues on a particular day (for example, "Billy" had 3 offenses: wearing flip flops, talking w/o permission and not following directions), would you squeeze all those acronyms into that one box for that one class period?
I love how you assess, Ben! I’m always looking for new ideas and you constantly bring it! Thanks!
:-) - Truly appreciate that man - I'm digging the podcast man, keep it up!
Thanks for sharing your Grading and Reporting System I teach in a Elementary & Junior High School Setting , Best to You
Do you remember the movie Mr. Woodcock starring Billy Bob Thorton? Would you say he was a good or a bad P.E. teacher?
Definitely Hall of Shame

@@ThePESpecialist thanks for taking the time to reply AND for doing all the work you do. Your school is so lucky to have you!

Do you have a spreadsheet already prepared that you could share? If so, could I get it?

Do you use the same grading sheet all 9 weeks or a new one each week? Thank you!!
One sheet for each class every 9 weeks, so 4 per year since it's one for each Quarter

Just wondering what state standards are you following for your GLO? Just wondering to create my own type for my school
I use the SHAPE America GLO Document (link in the video description)
You don't create your own standards, you use the standards on SHAPE America for your state that you're living in.
Do you assess the students individually and how is that accomplished?
Yep - Check out the link in the description for some examples!
Can I get a printable copy of that last sheet?
Sure there's a link in the description

Sure thing - yes, I'd just write in 8 point font and get them all in there :-)
