  • The PicknPack flexible food packaging system is as relevant today as it was during its development in 2016. Its concept delivers the food industry the much-needed benefits of automation - cost reduction, greater hygiene, and more efficient use of resources - combined with the unique ability to adapt to the product and batch size at hand.
    PicknPack consists of three modules:
    - sensors to assess product quality of individual or small batches before or after packaging;
    - a robotic arm controlled by vision technology that picks up and separates the product from a harvest bin or transport system and places it in the packaging in the correct position;
    - an adjustable packaging module that enables packaging with flexibility in package shape, size, product environment, sealing, and printing.
    PicknPack modules are connected to a multipoint framework so that it can be integrated into any production line. All modules are equipped with a user-friendly interface and an automated cleaning system that ensures optimum hygiene.
    Information from the production chain and the sensors in the PicknPack system is combined, stored, and provided to all the modules, as well as upstream and downstream in the chain. Thanks to added intelligence, this leads to maximum quality, reduced programming time and operator handover time, and less waste of food, packaging materials, and stock.
    Human intervention can be reduced to a minimum.
    The PicknPack project was coordinated by Wageningen University & Research. Project partners were the Danish Technological Institure, Tecnalia Research and Innovation, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, University of Manchester, Fraunhofer AVV, Lacquey BV, ITENE, Spectroscan, Marel, Tecnalia-AZTI, Cam-Tech A/S, XaarJet AB, and Marks & Spencer.
