  • Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
Sign up for my newsletter here: Sign up for the DRK Newsletter: eepurl.com/diPxsr
In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. I’m wondering if you have any tips/suggestions for pregnancy and/or postpartum knits - what to knit on that I will be able to wear during this time. Should I stick with cardigans and shawls or can I try a pullover with a large intended positive ease like a weekender? I’d love to hear any thoughts you have about crafting (knitting, spinning, etc) during this time. Thank you!
    2. Hi Andrea, I'm a new mum, baby Max was born in November, and I'm struggling to find time for knitting as the little one requires constantly my attention. But I miss knitting so much! knitting is a big part of who I am. Any tips on finding time? I'm sure you know all the tricks being the mum of two kiddos:) Thank you and happy new year!
    3. Hi Andrea! I've been an avid fan of all of your designs, tips and tricks since the beginning. Thank-you for sharing your knowledge and providing this Q and A forum for us. I have a question which I know you've talked about on another episode but I just can't seem to find it. I have a ChiaGoo Interchangeable Red Cable set of knitting needles and quite the collection of cables which I'd be lost without BUT trying to store them all in one place has just turned into a nightmare for me. PLEASE HELP!!! Would you please share how you store your needles. Thank-you! I LOVE YOUR WEEKLY PODCAST! Thanks much!
    4. Hi Andrea! I love your patterns, they inspired me to get back into knitting after about 8 years away from the hobby and I am currently waiting for my first ever sweater, your nurtured pattern, to finish blocking, yay! I have been watching all of your videos while knitting over the festive break, and wondered if you've ever shared what is in your notions pouch? I've been refreshing my tools as there are some great ones that have come out since I started back in 2006, and have added the cocoknits row counter on your recommendation, so I would love to know what other items you carry in your notions pouch and regularly use when knitting. I'm also a stationery fan and "what's in your pencil case" videos are common, I feel what's in your notions pouch should be just as popular! Thank you so much for inspiring me to pick up my needles again.

    5. I have a design question. Even though I'm pretty sure that you are knitting all the time :), I have wondered about how you manage to knit enough in your sweater design process. Specifically, after you have decided on the stitch pattern, structure, etc., do you just jump in and knit a full size version of the sweater you've envisioned? Or do you try out a mini-version to explore the concept/pattern in a scaled down version? I have to admit that I have a little fantasy of a whole array of little Mowry sweaters!

Socks are good for maternity. Your feet need more pampering by the end of pregnancy. The hospital room is cold too. Pack a pair of wool socks.

I think when you’re a mom especially, it’s always knitting and…. Never just knitting! My kids are older now but I am still so busy driving here, going there, I think I had more time when they were babies because I was home. Now with working and going to school myself, it’s always knitting and…watching a soccer game, sitting in class, waiting in a doctor’s office, sitting at a school play. I usually bring two projects with me everywhere: one is whatever my main project is at the time (sweater, shawl) but just in case I need keep it discreet or knit without looking for long periods of time, always a simple stockinette sock too!!

I just had my baby and finally felt good enough to enjoy knitting again, but with another older child I’ve been busy!!
So when I nurse, I make socks! I call them my “nursing sock series”. I keep a small stash of yarn by my chair and I’ve always got a sock on the needles

OMG I HAVE THE CHIBI NEEDLE THINGY!!!! Got it from a knitters who passed estate sale :) Honestly there’s so much to comment about in this video…you sing my song with everything about little babies and body changes and knitting. I so clearly remember the final relief of getting to wear what I wanted again. Basically from month 3 of pregnancy (with the first one, with the second you see it right away) til you finish breastfeeding (1 year old for both mine) you’re forced to wear utilitarian clothing and it’s so restricting!!!! I think if I was doing it again I’d buy clothes that made me feel better about myself as my body changed. I bounced back to the exact same size I was before so I can wear everything I had, but none of it is my style anymore so I’ve pledged 2024 is my selfish knit year. DONT WORRY NEW MOMS, you will get your time back!!!! After your spirit is broken for years and your life centers around your children (the process is so hard, but we come out changed in such an awesome way). Love you moms for everything you do xoxoxoxoxxoxoxox

With my last baby I was able to knit while he was nursing. Now that my youngest is seven, I do a lot of car knitting. Even though my kids are not babies anymore, I still tend to stick with simple knitting projects. With four children I need to be able to put my knitting down at any moment.

I definitely hear that push-pull between making time for crafts/personal creativity and time for your young children. I agree with you Andrea-- sometimes, for one reason or another, we just can't prioritize craft/creative time and I found one of my lessons to learn as a parent is being okay with that, being okay with putting my crafts aside for a period of time, and trust that they will be there when the time is right. It's just not worth the stress to fit it in and risk not being present with (or even resenting!) your children and family commitments. If I'm working too hard to make it fit, I just need to let life be what it is for a while. I don't mean that to sound defeatist, more accepting of where I am at at this point of my life. Thank you for putting this perspective out there!

I didn't anticipate how much my body would change after having a baby. The one area that I was unprepared for was my upper arm circumference! Its definitely one measurement I'm always checking when casting-on on new garment now! Your really build those arm muscles up quick when carrying around a baby all the time!

    To the new mom questions:
1st question: I know people have feelings about cotton yarn, but I might also recommend projects with cotton yarns because of their wash ability, and breath ability. I was so hot for my entire pregnancy, I did not want to put on a sweater ever. It was cotton all the time. I sweat so much. Also, babies make messes. Spit up, diaper leaks, nursing leaks etc. as much as you may want to use that beautiful wool, you may find that it’s too hot or gets ruined with stains or felted with how much you have to wash things.
2nd momma: I learned to crochet granny squares. I found different fun designs I liked and could make individual granny squares in 15-20 min. Then when I had enough I could make a blanket, cardigan, so many projects out there for pieced together granny squares

I switched entirely from knitting to crochet when i had babies and toddlers around. Firstly because i didn't like having such sharp needles around babies and toddlers. Secondly, because it is much easier to put down and pick up crochet without loosing stitches, and a curious toddler can't so easily pull your project apart. I didn't go back to knitting until my youngest was 3!

I feel like i caused absolute chaos for you with my question 😂 thank you for answering though!! I definitely need to check out those project pages, as I had been struggling with making sure i always had the cuff needles ready, that looks like the perfect solution! I’m also so glad to see you also have a mess of stitch markers in your pouch, I have recently tried to wrangle mine with magnets, a little tin in my pouch, and clipping them together but i still keep finding them everywhere. It’s a nice reminder of reality to see someone else just happily having them roam free in there!

An absolutely enthralling, fascinating and exciting book on drawing is "DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN" by Betty Edwards. In the book she teaches you how to access the right side of your brain and how to see things the way they are. I read the 1999 edition in 2001 and now I am rereading the 2012 edition. She teaches you that anyone and everyone can draw. They just need to learn how to shift from the left brain mode to the right brain mode.

I actually found there was more time for crafting when my kids were babies because we were home. Once they got older they were involved in more activities and there was a lot less time.
I’m enjoying colour by number books for adults…..no thought process involved!
My knitting is pretty much done at home so I have a crochet covered 1/2 pint jar on the end table in my living room that holds my notions. If I do take it travelling I use a small clear case recycled from a set of sample hair products (no need for expensive pouches) so I can see into it at a glance.

My baby will be a big 3 year old on the 22nd 😢 time flys by! That first year, and even during my pregnancy, I knit a lot of baby blankets, hats, and socks. Easy to pick up during those late night feeds 🍼 (I wasn’t able to BF my son 🤷🏻‍♀️) like mentioned, this is such a short season. I can sit and watch my son play with his trains while I get a few rows done on a project.
Also, I started my own small business out of our home so I could stay home with our son. That had also taken away from my knitting/yarny time, but I just adapted to car/family visit/church knits. I still get projects done, but not as fast as I once did. I know that the day will come that I will have more me time, but I will miss this stage in too with the little guy running around.

For cords I use a zippered CD case with clear plastic sleeves. This way I can store each cord, separately rolled and labeled with the length. Won't hold the needles but a really good and cheap way to store cords.

One thing I always have in my notions bag (which are often cool pencil cases) is a stitch fixer. It's about 4 inches long with a crochet hook on one end and a pointy needle on the other. I swear by it. It's great for helping to pick up stitches. And if I have to ladder down, it makes it so easy to just "pull" the lost stitch up.

I finished a shawl the day before my son was born. The amount of time I spent cuddled with my then newborn son under that shawl are some of my favorite memories if the newborn stage. I do plan on making that shawl again as it is one of my favorites and storing the original one to give to my son when he becomes a dad himself in the far off future. I also gifted my sister a shawl when she was pregnant and she had used it so much in the last year. I say shawls are the way to go with pregnancy and during the newborn stages.

Love catching up with you and your makes.
I do think we all struggle with finding time. When my babies were little I had to find my little moment of a few minutes to knit maybe just one row and be content with that. I did get very accustomed to sneaking in rows while sitting on the floor playing with them.
On the first question… I chose one garment to make for each time I was pregnant… that fitted me for that time or stage in my life. They were all cardigans and I found I wanted something that was a comfy cosy hug that made me feel good.
    💚

Coming at you 4 months post partum. I agree with Andrea- knitting a pullover when you are just coming out of pregnancy I think is a bit of a gamble! Even if you feel like your body hasn't changed beyond your growing bump during pregnancy, the hormonal shifts afterwards also change things so much. I think 3-4 months is when I started to feel like things were mellowing out, but I've just focused on knitting shawls or cowls like the DRK everyday cowl. In those first few months I just wanted something super easy that I wouldn't have to look at a chart or figure out where I was at.

Hi there, I like to wake up early in the morning to do my crafts. My daughter is an early riser too so sometimes that can be hard. I get up at 5 and have my coffee while I knit or spin yarn. She is now four so we got her an alarm clock that she is supposed to follow. It goes off at 7 am. Sometimes she plays or looks at books in the morning….. sometimes not. I recently started teaching her how to knit too. She has her bag of yarn and needles she “knits” with. I also let her do the peddling on my spinning wheel. So right now if I can’t get the time alone I try to incorporate her.

I really got into knitting socks when my two year old was born... Like I knit 20+ socks that year. I always had a sock near me and knit when I could. I would sometimes take a little time for myself at the end of the day, if I wasn't too tired, and knit before going to sleep. For now, just knit when you can and know you will get time to knit again. It comes in cycles with babes.

Hi all. I must say I love Andrea‘s recommendations, a little pricey for me. But I did find an odd solution, but it holds tons of cords, I purchased on Amazon, a “fishing leader wallet”. I’m assuming fisherman use it😂. But it has lots of little Ziploc pockets, easy to roll up your cords put them in there and I just took and labeled them with the cord size, small, convenient, easy to carry around and very reasonably priced. I hope that helps anyone on a budget looking for cord organization. It works for my Chiagoo. That’s all I use and they’re so flexible. It’s perfectt

I have ChiaoGoo Red Twist set and the bamboo set. I also the ChiaoGoo red twist shorties. ChiaoGoo cases are decent and I just store the shorties inside the Bamboo case. I have lots of cables, as I've tried the various ones that have come out. I don't like the spin ones much because yarn often sticks on the join. That never happens with the red cables. I I just keep the plastic pouches that the cables come in minus any card board insert. They always have the length label so I have a separate pouch for each size and store them in the side zipper of the case. I keep my favorite style, the red, in the red case zipper and all those other 'in case of emergency' cables in the same kinds of plastic bags in the Bamboo case's side zipper.
I have several pencil pouches with notions and then usually 2 or 3 projects that I keep in their own Japanese Knot Bags (pattern on etsy). All of this I keep in a colorful 15" round African market basket (I'm lucky to have a local store that stocks them but you can get them on etsy too). It has a wonderful leather handle and makes it easy to haul my stuff from room to room in my house. If I'm going to a doctor's appointment or something else where I may have some time, I just grab the Japanese Knot Bag that contains my 'easy' or small project and off I go. No need for all the other hoopla for short outings. If I'm traveling by car I just take the whole basket LOL. My sweetie knows that it's much easier to make a bit of space for the basket than to have an unhappy travel companion.🙃

If you breast feed your baby you may actually have a lot of time to knit! I had twins in December and find myself on the sofa with them 24/7. When I had my older daughter I actually started knitting because I was so bored breast feeding all day long. So I learned knitting with her on the nursing pillow either feeding or contact napping. I was scared of tandem nursing the twins but I actually mastered „knit feeding“ (props to Carson from Carslee handmade) them two weeks in. It just takes some practice to handle both knitting and breast feeding if you’re a first time mom.
It’s also a good idea to work on small projects like socks, hats or baby knits. I would just stay away from DPNs, those seem like a major hazard.

I loved a shawl for the same reasons that Andrea said. A little warmth and a blanket and a nursing cover.
For sweaters I also used an oversized sweater with a split hem and nursed under it. (I wasn't able to breastfeed very long 3m and 9m so they fit under the sweater) i still wear the sweater and I am 30lbs heavier than pre-kids. I also had a thrifted oversized cardigan that was almost a housecoat for me that I wore almost everyday at home (I destroyed that sweater lol)

I just want to say your resilient passion for your crafts is so inspiring! I am in the last class of a Masters program while working a full time job. Logic and time will not allow me to spend much time doing crafts (knitting) but I always listen to your videos. I do have a project on needles and another I need to frog and start again (in larger needles). I cannot wait to have more time for enjoyable pursuits such as knitting, playing with my dogs, hiking, and whatever captures my imagination. Thank you for being that source of inspiration. I enjoy you pod casts so much. THANK YOU!!!

I was only into crocheting when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was a 'mobile furnace' so I lived in shorts and tees ... even in a Canadian winter. Wool was not my friend then. Most of my projects were small especially after she was born. My favorite project was a cross stitch Christmas stocking.

I know the feeling of too little time in the day. What I feel really helps me, is to try to let go of that feeling, by focuising more on what I actually CAN do in a day. And it turns out that all the little moments together, turn into quite some finishes! Also think about regular moments that you can implement knitting in. For example in case you're watching TV every evening, or watch the news in the morning, watch this podcast every week etc. That can all be knitting time (too)! And I try to not overspend my time on social media, but use it to actually craft. So I quit insta, facebook, etc. and that really helped spending more time crafting.

I love that everyone is looking for ways to refill the joy of life. Many years ago when my son was young I tended to knit baby things. As time matched on, I have made a commitment to myself to do whatever thing fills me at the moment... I can say.that my attention has been taken in many directions over the past year dealing with family matters...but I committed to myself last January 1st to knit every day and to do yoga everyday... I can say making a commitment to myself did the trick.

I have also struggled with "enough time in the day" so I have been actively trying to think of life as a metaphorical garden. I think of distributing my energy on work, parenting, eating, knitting, etc.(not time, because everyone's energy levels are different) like planting an appropriate garden (i.e., choosing the right tasks) and distributing my collected rainwater (i.e., energy) to the best of my ability and to the most success. Considering the way we talk about our time/energy matters. English uses the time=money metaphor a lot, but I didn't find that fulfilling

I had a baby in February and I was in the same position of wondering what to knit last year! One thing that I have really loved learning about recently is Latched Mama! They are a small business who makes nursing and pregnancy friendly clothing. I love layering the sweaters and cardigans I make with their nursing and pregnancy apparel! Cardigans are great to make during this time because they are adjustable to changing hormones/body sizes, and can double as a nursing cover in a pinch if you're nursing after pregnancy 😉

As a mommy I agree with finding pockets of time to craft. I have a few socks going that I can grab and throw in the truck when I run errands. I love carpool knitting 😊. I have project buckets/baskets throughout the house that I can grab and work on whenever the time allows. Unfortunately, I’m unable to attend any knit nights as my children’s activities are at the same time, but that’s something I’m looking forward to in the future.

On the subject of cable storage, I keep mine in a big zippered project bag, I use power cord minders to keep them together in groups! You can get cord minders that are adjustable, I use Chiaogoos and KnitPicks needles and I organize the KP ones by length one group of short, one long. My Chiaogoo cords I do by tip size. They are still messy and I still feel like I wish I had a way to keep them cleaner looking but it’s quick and easy to pull out a bundle and grab what I need without creating a cord barf situation!

I knit the Ginny cardigan a size up for pregnancy and postpartum and love it! I’ve also worn a lot of cardigans with tank tops that pull down for breastfeeding, or cropped-ish sweaters over a tank top to reduce bulk if I pull the sweater up and tank down to nurse! My baby is used to wooly fabric bunched up next to her face while she eats 😂

Love your answer to the first question! I’ve just had our third and final baby and also wear her a lot - but had never considered the magic and convenience of a shawl! Also struggling a lot with making for my size at the moment… with breastfeeding on demand, my bust measurement is drastically different every time I measure. 😂 There’s a lot of guess work happening… and making garments with a lot of positive ease just to make sure it’ll fit ok no matter what!

I love all of your notions cute little bags. Like you I also have one in each of my project bags. I love them so much I made a little tin toolkit and in it I have basically all the essentials and I now just need to have one of those toolkits on each of my project bags.
I’m re-designing the label on top of it and I was wondering if I could send one as a gift for you to try when I have the new design ?
I live in Portland, OR and we met 10 years ago ( I know you me so many people you won’t remember but it was a happy day for me) at Happy Knits, remember that fun store ?

Gorgeous yarn!! I just finished my first skein of home spun yarn and it doesn't look like those but I am so happy and proud of it. I will find a way to use it, probably as color work in a hat. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Thank you for the inspiration to begin spinning! Can't wait to have yarn that looks like what you've created.

Love the yarn you finished spinning! As for how to make time for our making, reading, etc... One of the things I like to do is write down all of the little things I do to fill up my bucket. I have a spot in my paper planner where I just jot down everything I read or stitch on that day, even if just for a couple of minutes. It helps me feel a lot better when I can see that I'm slowly making progress on things and reminds me that I AM finding time for what feels special to me, even if it's only in tiny bites. Have a great weekend! We are finally expecting some snow in NH this weekend - I hope it makes it up to Portland!

I loved my swoncho during the early days since I could easily wear mine to pump or move it to feed the babies. I knitted a Moonwhistle shawl during my early postpartum months with my twins since it was a relatively simple stitch pattern to follow/pick back up mid row or do little bits at a time.

Hi Andrea! Looooing time fan but I’m not a UA-cam person so I’ve never watched before but I’ve got my alerts on now! lol
I do have a question: you said you wash woolens weekly, socks for sure, but how often do you wash your garments, specifically sweaters. Do you wash shawls and cowls often? How about hats and mitts? I’d love to know
    Thank you!!!!!

I love my Thread and Maple pages! They are amazing for travel and yes they are a little pricey but having them organized and with me keeps me from buying more needles when I stumble on a LYS (always visit at least one when I travel) and find a project I must start immediately!!!

I’m finishing my Alpenglo. It’s looking great using Magpie Fibers, Spincycle and Sonder yarn. My question is how to gauge is a yarn is really fingering, sport , DK or worsted? Given where I live in Southern California there a very few yarn shops so mostly I buy through the internet. But yarns seem to vary so much within each weight. How can I figure this out as some dk are like worsted and some sport are really fingering? What clues can I look for when online yarn shopping. Thank you
