The dialog in Red Rising is definitely young adult. Your summary was spot on. The story was interesting but I did not continue the series. I will be interested in your follow-up reviews.
I would def recommend continuing. The first book is ok, but the 2nd book is so much better. The YA tone is pretty much gone at that point, and you get the truer feel of where Pierce intends to go with the story.
Yes!!! I pretty much agree with everything. I actually picked this up when I was about 14-15, I fell in love with this series because I hadn't read hunger games, so the tropes were new to me then. Now as I reread it as a 20 year old, I find the same issues with it. And you want more world building? Prepare to have that desire fulfilled. So glad you hopped on the Howler train and I can't wait to see what you think about the sequels!❤❤
I 100% agree with everything you’ve said in this video. Everything. Even the writing suggestion you mentioned at the end. I was so bored when at the start of the Institute and like you waiting for it to be over so we can go to the next thing…except there’s no next thing. Haha. But same. Probablly will still read book 2 because I’m curious how book 1 is the worst in the series.
I agree, the structure was strange. I also think the plot was rushed a lot towards the end. I didn't think there was enough time to properly set up the Jackal and make the climax really hit.
I ve had the total opposite reaction. I ve got bored at the first 100 pages, and I ve got interested later. The first day pages are extremely plot predictable wargame part to be that long. I think that s the reason why I liked the next pages
I really enjoyed the first part on Mars. But then, man, did it fall off a cliff. I think I was like you. I bought the whole series in a bundle, so carried on with it. Hope you enjoy book 2
Im about a third of the way thru and im not loving it. I'm gonna finish it because I hate a DNF but I'm definitely gonna have to force myself to finish it
"The first book is the worst" - this is a great trick to lure the readers into reading the second book of this garbage series. It is one of the worst books I have read in my life. Every character speaks and behaves in the exact same way. There is zero depth and character. It reads like it's written by a teenager with no experience of life. It's highly derivative of other works like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Hunger Games.
I just finished this book today and I completely share your sentiment. I am baffled by the praise this book/series has received on Good reads and UA-cam. It did not engage me one bit and I have no interest in continuing this series.
You’ll enjoy the pacing far more in these next books. Much more consistent and the series isn’t as constrained to one setting as book 1. This is my absolute favorite series, so much so my dog is named Darrow, can’t wait to see how you feel about golden son.
I don't get the hype. Hunger Games tropes and definitely YA which I didn't know when I started it and I usually only read adult fantasy. Darrow had a God complex and I couldn't get past that and never followed the rest of the series and avoid Pierce Brown.
Yeah, not the best start. I’m intrigued as it’s loved by so many! So surly, surly it must step it up. I’ve committed now so I suppose I’ll find out haha. Thank for watching :)
The first book surely is the worst book in the series but OH BOY does it get so much better as the series progresses. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the next books!
Hated the book. Didn’t like how things sort of just happened. Big fights and deaths happen within a couple of sentences which irritated me too instead of being more detailed. The main characters arrogance annoyed me too and will only enjoy it if he dies which won’t happen. Everything felt a little too “been there, done that” Will not be continuing.
I think your right. I’m a big believer in artistic contracts. You make a piece of work and establish a contract with your audience or reader in how structurally or stylistically the book will work…and 9 times out of 10 breaking that contract will feel odd. It’s hard to explain…but imagine if the movie goodfellas had a massive all singing and dancing musical number in the middle of it, it would feel strange and out of place and break everything that game before it. Quite an extreme comparison, but thats how I felt with this book. Brown had established a style and rhythm and then breaks it, and to me it felt odd. I’m a big fan or experimental, post modern and post structural fiction, but books of that style establish their presentation quickly, so I know what I’m getting. So yeah, your totally right, a long way of agreeing with you haha…I think I do have a tendency to like styles and structures that don’t break the contracts they establish. Thanks for watching. Hope you’re good.

Think your comment about it was the straw the broke the camels back and made me pick them up. So thanks! New one coming this July isn’t there?
@@rororeads Yep, Light Bringer is coming out in July

Well that’s got me very excited to continue!! Say hello to Darrow for me!
Totally agree with everything and what a great idea, it would have been a lot better to start in the institute and start discovering as it goes.
Good video. I actually gave up after this book even though I've got the other two here

Well you're definitely missing out and to be completely honest it's not YA really can't stress enough on it😊

The first book is 100% the worst BUT please believe me book 2 will blow you away 😅
spoilers. The proctors were too stupid and the way Jax dies is incredibly dumb.
Sounds like you're one of those readers who likes things presented in a particular way.

I've read so much piss I could almost smell it
