I have the same size wrist as you and we’re pretty close in age. I’ve owned the 124270 for 1.5 years. In that time, it completely reshaped what I value in a watch - comfort. I’ve come to appreciate the Exp1 124270’s bracelet as the best feature of the watch. At first it felt dainty compared to other bracelets in my collection. But, the reduced width translates to increased comfort. Comfort is more important to me than appearing 1mm larger. And if we are being honest, 1mm of difference is completely invisible to anyone but the most discernible wearer. About 6 months into ownership I recognized just how special the watch is. That was the sign to start selling off my collection. I went from 8 watches to 3, and in doing so, I recouped the cost of the Exp1 plus some extra $$$! I would now describe myself as a recovering watch enthusiast because I’m totally satisfied with where I’m at. Maybe I’ll pick up something special down the line, but I don’t have the insatiable urge to buy anymore. I've certainly matured beyond the urge to buy based on social content and hype. This watch showed me what I like and value in a timepiece, and now I can see when those qualities are absent in other watches. Of course these are my personal opinions and everyone is different, but I wanted to share because I love this damn watch so much!
As they say it’s a collection killer, I’ve had mine since Fall 2022… 98% of the time since then it’s been glued to my wrist. Agree 100% on comfort, nothing comes close it’s crazy
Great review/week on the wrist vid on the more under appreciated modern Rolex. I got this watch for my dad for his retirement/60th birthday last year and it's a really classic Rolex without screaming Rolex to people's faces and it's so damn versatile.
I recently bought a 114270. Very similar to this watch obviously.. the explorer can look plain in photos and videos but when you see the black glossy dial in person and the white gold numerals/hands.. there’s just enough flash to make it not boring
It definitely could be a "one watch collection." It is an ideal watch for a minimalist. And the 36mm size is over-criticized. I think for anyone with a wrist 7.25 inches or less it looks great. It looks perfect for wrists at or under 6.75 inches. I don't own this model, but the earlier model, 114270. Also 36mm. It is my daily.
I’m on the waitlist for the 124270. I’m still on the fence as to whether or not I’ll stick to it or a couple others I have in mind. Trying to discern between about 3 or 4 for my 30th birthday/masters graduation present to myself. In a couple years but this is literally a perfect watch in my opinion.
I currently have only one watch, the 214270 39mm mark 2, imo the best version. I almost want to buy a second one as a backup in case something happens, especially since there’s very little appreciation in the secondary market. It’s THAT good
I have almost 100 watches and the Explorer 40 gets the most wrist time. For my 7-1/4” wrist, the 40 is where Rolex perfected the Explorer. I almost never wear it on the bracelet - looks great on a NATO but best on a black sailcloth strap!
Agree with your point on legibility. Not sure why exactly, but this is the easiest watch to read in my collection. It's overall a pretty subdued/restrained watch due to its size and colour, apart from the super shiny bezel.
I love my explorer and I think the 39 is best size for me, the 36 is a bit too small and the 40 felt bulkier than it needed to me. Bracelet all the way, Rolex in my opinion makes the best bracelets
I also love the Explorer. This watch is so good. But the price tag is just too much for me. So I went with the Tissot Gentlemen instead. Another great option is the Longines Conquest (the older version with 12, 3, 6, and 9 on the watch. But I’ll buy Rolex Explorer one some day. That's a fact.
You’re making me want to trade my 6 piece collection for the Explorer 40. I have a flat, wide, 7” wrist and regardless of proportions, on my wrist the 40 is the version I’ve been waiting for. I’m just afraid of being bored without other daily option. Maybe I’ll just save up. You’re totally right, something about it is just P E R F E C T
I have a 7,5" flat wide wrist and love the 36mm. Definitely had to get used to the size after wearing my 41mm Blackbay GMT. There's a reason Rolex didn't have a larger size than 36mm until 2010. I would try to spent some time with the 36mm. I love the proportions more than on the 40mm. Btw. the dial on the 36mm is exactly the same size as the submariner.
Watch review videos outside are so much better ! I personally make mine outside for the sheer purpose of natural nature background & it gets me out of the house. Even if I went down the street to a park. With that being said, this was such a good video ! Leaves in the background ruffling & the Rolex on the dirt shot was amazing ‼️
If I was only allowed to get one watch, it would likely be an Explorer I. Difficult to find a timepiece so versatile---suit and tie, jeans and a t-shirt, it goes with everything.
Agree 100%. Despite being a strap monster the lug and case design is not conducive to straps. Luckily, the bracelet looks and feels as good as you say ! And yes, it is insanely accurate. After 180 days on wrist mine gained all of three second 😮.
great video.. just looking to buy one my self.. two years ago I bought a moonwatch. when my first son was born, now I would like to add a rolex to my collection as well.. :-) btw are you from the czech republic??
I have the same watch, bought new about 6 months ago. Looks great on my 6.2” wrist and makes what I thought was my ideal size watch (the Aqua Terra 38mm) look huge. My only beef is its accuracy. My Omegas never lose time, instead gaining about 2s a day. My Explorer loses about 2s a day. Only a watch nerd thinks about these things but it makes it feel like the Explorer is losing 4s a day. I just set it 1 minute ahead so I don’t worry about being late for something.
A real dream watch. It is the perfect everyday watch. For me there is only one watch that is visually very similar, and that is the JLC Polaris No Date with Black Dial. It is only about 5 mm wider. Maybe you might like this one too. But I don't know of any other watches than these two where the time can be read so perfectly in every situation. And when it comes to accuracy, Rolex did that 40 years ago. Back then, my Rolex was still working to the minute after a month. Interestingly, you touched on all the points that were crucial to me. And that also includes the choice of bracelets. The only thing that annoys me about Rolex is that they don't give their wearers the option to change the bracelets.
I have 6.5 inch wrist. Took me a while to find right size. There are 3 micro adjust positions that most don’t know about. Once I found them I found the perfect fit this watch is known for.
Prefer the 114270 for better fit and symmetry. The 124270 is too dainty. The 19mm lugs n aggressive bracelet taper to 16mm just makes it wear too small.
I want to try an homage before pulling the trigger on it or a tudor ranger, I currently use 45mm dive watch and it looks Ok on my wrist. Guess 36mm will be too small
we think the same bro! , I really want a gmt, but other than that , its either a Wimbledon fluted 36 or the explorer36, I'm finding the green op 36 vey cool now, I think I would be okay getting that as well .
I agree man! I love my Explorer 124270. It’s my favorite watch. Mine isn’t that accurate though. Probably 1 second per day, which isn’t that bad. Question though. Would you say you love the fit of the Explorer over the SMP 300? I’ve been thinking about getting the SMP 300 after watching your videos on it, but always worried about the large size. Great video man!
The Seamaster is big but it’s a dive watch and so it gets the pass from me. I love my Seamaster it’s my favorite watch, but on my wrist I’d pick the explorer over any other watch I’ve ever worn
It's always down to personal tastes and preferences, but the proportions on the 40mm version are closer to the original 36mm Explorer. Not sure why Rolex messed around with these ratios, as we all loved that fact about the old Explorers - maybe they didn't ever realise?
I got my Explorer 40 in June last year.... My first ever Rolex. And it's perfect, however I don't wear it as mu h as I should be cause I hate scratches.... And that polished bezel freaks me out lol
I’ve worn Rolex since 2001. As an OCD guy who isn’t necessarily wealthy, I beat the crap out of my Rolex watches; one of the reasons I’m loyal to the brand is how robust they are. Your watch isn’t jewelry; it should become an extension of you and wear scratches and scars from every moment of your life. Enjoy your watch as it was intended.
i sold my DJ36 for this. Goes with more, looks better in a suit. A watch for a true classic gent. If youre flashy, like to wear brand name stuff, then go with the DJ36
Awesome video, the heart wants what the heart wants, I love the explorer in theory, but I cannot get bananas about it, the Ranger though, it got my heart beatnik faster when I saw it, and I bought it.
People who like natos have complained about modern Rolex not being nato strap friendly for some time now. It's because the holes for mounting the springbars are too close the case. Tudor doesn't do this; Rolex does. Not sure why Rolex made this decision. I suppose they believe you should wear their watches how they sell it.
Rolex... Where is the white dial?.. and for the 40mm version, please move the Explorer text back to the southern part of the dial right above the superlative chrono writing. Yes, just like the previous 39. Thanks for the vid, man.
It is on my short list. Agree with you on it being as perfect as a watch can get. It would be even sweeter if they made it in some Day Date or OP colors.
The comments about the 36 vs 40 related to proportions …are so stupid. They are in scale to the dial size. If your wrist is less than 6.75” than the 36mm looks good. Over 7” and it looks like a woman’s watch. My wrist is 7.3”. The 36mm looks ridiculously small. The 40mm even is smallish but better.
@@Pler1978the same people that claim 36 is the only true explorer are the same people that ask every time somebody post one online “what size is that“. If the proportions were so unique to 36 then they would know what size it was right off the bat and wouldn’t have asked.
Ppl don’t loose your money in this . The king on 36mm is either 114270 or 14270! I had owned all explorer sizes and versions . If you want 36 go with old reference. Thank me later
I went through many rolex models before settling for the 36mm day date. I had the explorer too, and my personal take is that, you take the logo off and it's nothing but a very simple, and "boring watch". Similar with the sky-dweller, take the rolex logo off, and you have a pretty cluttered, confused identity piece in your hands.
That take is so bad lol, its like saying ”take the logo of the rolex and you have a tudor prince” take the logo of the skydweller and you still have a very complicated art of work (still ugly tho with or without the logo)
Ian Fleming had it right and so did Broccoli. To me the Sub and Explorer are the best all around watches full stop. No date, no extra BS. Tells the time and can be worn everywhere whether humid, wet, cold, dry and hot. And it is only 36mm where it’s at. I don’t care for the 41mm sub or maxi case. Those don’t fit like a sub at all.
I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and it's been my most worn watch in that time. It accompanied me on visits to at least 6 different countries, and because of the memories, it will forever remain in my collection! I'm actually thinking of adding an older reference and some point because I love the design so much 😅
I tend to disagree that it’s better on the bracelet although i do know Rolex make the best bracelet, it’s so boring when I look across social media and everyone are wearing it on bracelet. A true explorer lovers know it’s a strap monster and that’s what makes it so wonderful and joyful to wear. I was once tempted to get 124270 but got put off by its poor designs between those lugs. 😅
That's like saying size 10 shoes are too small. For someone with size 12 feet? Yes. For someone with size 10 or less feet it is not. Not everyone has the same size wrist.
Not only that, I also happen to have small 6.5 inches wrists and even though I've had many amazing watches. This watch is jusy perfection, it's simple yet elegant, sturdy, well made, and beautiful. There are not that many great options when it comes to 36mm watches.
i won’t say it’s a lady watch but perhaps too dressy for a sport watch, older references with lesser bracelet tapering is perfect. Modern watches these days even for dress watches have increased their sizes to 38 smallest and biggest 40. I own a 39mm mk2 and it looks more rugged as a sport watch (which is what it should be) and not too shiny with its matte dial
Fair play but I disagree. For me, I like a non diver or chronograph to be smaller. The absence of a tool bezel makes the dial too large as you size up imo. I don’t want a dinner plate sitting on my wrist. But I do agree less aggressive tapering from the vintage days looks really good. I don’t mind it either way.
@@layne-davison Well to some it’s a dinner plate but it’s a sport watch to begin with, the reason for bigger dial is legibility, function before aesthetic, it’s similar case to a pilot watch with huge size and dial as well as big numerals. So i tend to see 39 mk2 as the perfect evolution of explorer, it’s at its peak of design where Rolex removed all flaws existed from its predecessors.
No, I have a lot of watches in my collection and it just seems to be perfect like the Speedmaster or the BB58 is. It doesn’t have to be anything too exciting or have many complications or be expensive to tick all the boxes and for some reason the Explorer 1 seems to be one of those watches.
I have the same size wrist as you and we’re pretty close in age. I’ve owned the 124270 for 1.5 years. In that time, it completely reshaped what I value in a watch - comfort. 3 years on the wrist here. Concur 100%. My best fitting watch by a mile. Mine runs 0.5s per day. Wild.

Totally agree. I can't get enough of watching the white gold numerals 😮
I have the same one, love it. And the 20mm lug width looks amazing, makes it more masculine.
I have a 114270 too I’ve got as a present from my mother in 2009. Tbh I prefer the proportions on the 114270.

I came for the watch but im more mesmerized by how you're recording outside but there's no noise from the background (wind, etc), how?
I have the 40mm one. But I think the lume last a very short time… How long can your last ?
How long does the lume last? For me it only lasts about an hour
Enjoy. It does a look a little small on the wrist.

The 124270 is too dainty.
The 19mm lugs n aggressive bracelet taper to 16mm just makes it wear too small.

I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and it's been my most worn watch in that time. It accompanied me on visits to at least 6 different countries, and because of the memories, it will forever remain in my collection!
I'm actually thinking of adding an older reference and some point because I love the design so much 😅
36mm is the right size. ❤❤❤
Superrep clean factory 39mm, my daily for $400 with Swiss 2824, 2sec fast. Love it! Not worth it buying gen.
Replica
I tend to disagree that it’s better on the bracelet although i do know Rolex make the best bracelet, it’s so boring when I look across social media and everyone are wearing it on bracelet. A true explorer lovers know it’s a strap monster and that’s what makes it so wonderful and joyful to wear. I was once tempted to get 124270 but got put off by its poor designs between those lugs. 😅
I mean you cant fault the watch because its incredibly basic. Black dial, indices. period. Not much you can fuck up on it now.
36 is too small in person... I think it's actual size is 35.5 or something .. this looks much better
NOS 14270. End of story.
Six and a half inch wrist
it's too small, it is 35,4mm. Any other brand would get negative comments.
That's like saying size 10 shoes are too small. For someone with size 12 feet? Yes. For someone with size 10 or less feet it is not. Not everyone has the same size wrist.
This video can be a lot shorter. Just say it’s a ROLEX. The rest of the details is quite irrelevant
rolex explorer. how original
The only reason you love this watch is because it has a Rolex logo.
Rolex’s crown logo is amazimg
Only reason you say that is because you can’t afford one and wish you had a Rolex instead of your Casio!

Not only that, I also happen to have small 6.5 inches wrists and even though I've had many amazing watches. This watch is jusy perfection, it's simple yet elegant, sturdy, well made, and beautiful. There are not that many great options when it comes to 36mm watches.
@@littlerascals6529hey don’t disrespect Casios like that
Guy spouting BS about what looks good or bad while wearing a dodgy 'tache and backwards baseball cap...
It’s a nice Rolex for a lady or a guy with a girl sized wrist. Otherwise, the 39 mk2 is far better.
With respect, awful take.
feel the need to compensate for something?
i won’t say it’s a lady watch but perhaps too dressy for a sport watch, older references with lesser bracelet tapering is perfect.
Its a boring watch though? No?
No, I have a lot of watches in my collection and it just seems to be perfect like the Speedmaster or the BB58 is. It doesn’t have to be anything too exciting or have many complications or be expensive to tick all the boxes and for some reason the Explorer 1 seems to be one of those watches.
Looks like a Seiko 5. 😂
