She began inventing and licensing products for the toy industry in 1992. She started in the pet industry in 2003. Because she liked it so much, she decided to focus on just pet products beginning in 2006. In the early 90’s, she worked as a full-time travel agent. As her inventing business grew, she began working as a part time agent in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. By 2002, she was working on her design business full-time.
Her degree is actually in biology with a minor in art history, but she was always a big game player especially board games. Being a travel agent as well as enjoying board games, she got an idea for a travel game. Passport was her first game design. Unfortunately she never licensed that game. (In the early 90’s, travel and educational games were not considered very marketable.) However, she enjoyed the ideation and creation of the board game so much that she designed another one and another one. On just her fourth try, she licensed Leapin’ Lily Pads, a dart board game, in 1995!
Of the more than 50 products she has licensed in her career, most have made it to market. A few did not due to manufacturing issues or management changes.

How much is it ? I wish the pricing was more straightforward . I don’t want to go through a two hour consultation call only to find out I can’t afford it yet .
Fire Mama it was a while ago so I m sure their pricing has changed but there are multiple options with different costs. The amount of help you might need really depends on how much experience you have now. You should call and talk to them. It was a great experience and once they taught me how to approach licensing a new product I’ve been very confident and comfortable doing it on my own. Once you know how to talk to companies it becomes much easier to reach the right person. I still have my day job but have had some small success. I currently have a small product being looked at for licensing. It can be a bit of a slow process. They give you all the tools and support you need to succeed but it’s up to you to have a good product. Good luck. 🍀

Wow, 50+!! Amazing to see how the creative mind works to see an end to the solution means. Relationships and mentoring are a definite plus in being able to bring concepts to selected licencees with options. I love how she has been able to build on previous successes in different markets. This is great! As a european engineer/designer/inventor I'm a bit sad we don't have the "provisional patent". One question about the licensing fees: 5% of what? The sales price to consumer?

Very smart
My question is how much does it cost to get my product patent and licensed? We tried another company then heard all the bad reviews and fraud and cost was rediculous yet they said our idea was the vest they ever had but wanted more money constantly. Please help. I can make my product to start and i can have my packaging designed but want to get it patent and licensed so it cant be stollen and would like to sale to retail stores. Then once it gets bigger id like a company to help me manufacture my products
Amanda mentioned 5% as a typical royalty rate, but is that on wholesale or retail? There are many ways to slice a deal.
I have an idea that is related in technologies but I dont know where to start and who i can sale? It to?
If I had the chance I would have been one myself. Got tens of ideas myself, out of the blue, without making a purpose out of it.
If I would have had a first opportinity and made some cash with one, hundreds would have folllowed.
Of course relationships are critical. When $65 for a PPA isn't something you xan afforrd to risk, and you also don't have ANY connections whatsoever, well...
Hello Steve and Amanda. I’m feeling stuck with my invention. I have a patented product but am stuck in the manufacturing stage. Don’t know how to find a suitable manufacturer. My product is a plastic toy. Very educational. I am interested in how Amanda went about getting a manufacturer to make her products. I have successfully found companies who would consider selling the product line but only when I have the products. If ultimately like to get a licensing agreement with loyalties. 😊🙏🏽😊

I had an idea that I shared with a company board has called me four times but I have not returned your car because I don’t have a provisional or protocol or anything at all should I wait to call him until I’m more educated and have something on paper thst I can show my oroduct .? Curious to when u would want to use a "broker" as opposed to going direct to a company or at least trying first. I would think the "broker" is some sort of middle man that prob has the connections that you dont have, but also isnt exactly working for free. Is his money taken off the top typically or is he getting a cut of the royalty?
k bar you should watch some of the other videos with a Toy Broker. If you’re not serious about this industry I would submit directly to the toy companies. But If you’re very serious about this industry a Toy Broker’s can be extremely helpful. It’s what you know and who you know in this industry. There’s a toy trade show coming up in November in Chicago called Chi TAG great place for beginners. But it’s expensive! Thank for watching!
Hi Stephen, can you please tell me what the high side percentage and low side of royalties payment should be when licensing a product, i know they can vary but if you can just give a ballpark figure.. thank you..
T wie all depends on the technology. All depends on how much risk you’ve taken away in terms of market demand, prototypes, and even protection. 3% slow side 10% of the high side.

If the inventor only gets upto 5 % how much does he has to share this with promoter/helper for helping you ? Or does he gets his commision from the company, leaving your 5 % intact ? Please can you clarify ? Thanks.
There are different ways of paying the people who help you get a deal. At inventRight, we never share an inventor's royalties or profits. Others have a different business model.
