- I don't know how many other artists get this when they draw or paint humans, but (well-meaning?)people usually try to guess which celebrity they think I've depicted, or they surrender when they can't figure out who it's supposed to be. What if I told you you can paint a person without them being someone famous? 7.5 billion people in the world and it has to be someone you recognize? Ok. Anyway, this video is about not worrying about likeness when it's not important to your artwork.

Reference is an ingredient in your dish. You get to choose how much to use, what other ingredients & spices to add, and how to prepare it. Take a nice andouille sausage and make a delicious gumbo with it. Serve boiled, unseasoned chicken breast if that's your choice.

Your way to make arts is fantastic! So true, my paintings don't look like my references at all too. It's crazy but I'm not into it to paint it exactly like references. They are only ideas to make my own paint.

I Løve Jøsh Dun. Take ur own photos, especially for portraits....no one wants to sit for extended time or multiple sessions. But, I agree there is no right or wrong way to make art. Express something & b honest. Love life-Make art ✌🏻
I’d honestly just settle on things looking recognizably human when I draw them.

it's still good to practice that, because it's a good test to know that you can really make anything you think of. figuring out what it is you want to make is the next step, no?

@@bramvanderwoerdt7186 I'm adding bunch of bright colors where it wasn't there in the reference, now everything looks like rainbow themed... still figuring out which combination fits well together :)
That's an important first step though. Know your rules before you break them. Making your art exactly like your reference is good if that's what you're going for
Because at the end of the day your painting WILL STAND ALONE! Not hanging next to the reference! One of my greatest, and first lessons when I became a portraiture artist

This is true. That’s why I use vibrant strokes with color coming through to help portray life or sadness or whatever the face says ya know? I try. I love this guys work for that I also work fast and without inhibition or too much detail to help the characters come alive. AlSo, color is a huge factor in mood . So ask yourself what mood this person is giving before u paint. I mean just a few things I’ve learned to train myself to do before or during a piece I care Bout😊😉 if u are an artist and ya e any tips to share please do😊
@@averyartisticraccoon3007 yes I'm a self taught artist. I have starting drawing myself regularly at least thus way nobody judge me. And lioness comes with time. Just work and enjoying the process.

Exactly, why should we as artists overly concern ourselves with recreating images [perfectly] when the camera can do it so much better? Best to channel the reference through oneself and see what feeling or emotion we are able to export from it. My process and opinion at least.
It comes from a sense of pride. Back in the day, artists didn't even have the tech to capture a person's likeness with a click, and some people want to capture that realistic aesthetic with their hand instead of tech. Should they worry so much or put themselves down because they can't capture it exactly? Nope. But there's an appeal.
Check out Voka -the painter....he provides both, a likeness & expression. But no right or wrong way to make art. Just b honest & express something. ✌🏻
i feel the same way, in a way. i don’t love recreating photos through art exactly the same as the photo looks because there’s not any fun in that. where’s the interest? i’d rather see something recreated in an abstract way because you can see the artist through it. my thoughts exactly.

omg yes!! This is what I always thought.
Being able to recriate an exact perfect copy of a photo takes incredible talent and technique, and it is admirable, of course, but a little boring.
What I love about art is the ability to create something new, turning into reality a vision that only existed in your head. Putting yourself and your own style into it and making it unique.
I just don't see the appeal of looking at something that is exactly like something else that already exists. A perfect copy.
Yeah, that kind of painting is really dated. Now we have cameras we don't need that skill so much lol
@@lotte7971 Well, the skill is not so much a bad thing to have. It's the content- the idea behind the work that makes it valuable. There was actually a photorealism movement in the 60s and 70s that was responding to minimalism and pop art. It was meant to be commentary on what was appropriate subject matter for art (rebelling against the idea that only certain topics could be considered art) - they would take ordinary things like cars and make them important by recreating them photo-realistically. So I wouldn't say that it's dated so much that it's had its purpose. To use it just to show off your skill? Boring and kind of conceited. Back then, it had an important reason to exist within the narrative of art history. Now? People just kind of use it to recreate celebrities and post it on Instagram.

The ability can be extremely useful if you use it to create your own things, like in game development or animation for instance.
But just copying a photo is boring to me.
I’m only an artist by hobby, but I actually love realism. To me at least, it’s immensely satisfying to struggle with it to look like your reference and then hopefully achieve it. I don’t know why, but I enjoy it personally lol.
Couldn't agree more - i find it true for drawing especially; theres an emphasis placed on getting exact likeness, but so often that leads to preventing your own expression as an artist.
I totally agree. I paint landscapes mainly, and often I leave things out from my references or even add things that aren't there. It's not compulsory to produce an exact replica of your reference. You are in charge of what goes into your work.
Your painting doesn't need to look like the reference. Good looks tend to fade out but the mind never does, it only grows. That's why good portrait art at all times needs to capture the soul of the subject. The face is the mirror of the mind (and not the mirror of the looks). You've done a great job in capturing the soul of the woman here. It's often in the eyes, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart. Eyes in artworks have something special, they often times say more then words can. Eyes are very similar to drawings in that regard, if you can say it in words there's no need to draw it...

Funnily enough, i can still see the likeness of the model in your portrait- my facial references tend to be starting points, and the finished product may look wildly different (though, this could be due to my nasty habit of overworking a project)
Also, because I feel weird about painting off of exact images, i tend to photoshop together a collage of images as a reference. This girls eyes, that cool mouth, that curly wig... same for landscapes. Of course, (hopefully) my paintings don't look like a collage at the end, but as if it was always one consistent product. Pretty fun, too!

I've been really disappointed with my recent paintings lately the more I compare them to the references, but you're completely right. they're just a starting point, our brains have so much more to add!!

I needed this video and I didn't even know it. I always get way too hung up on making a drawing or painting as close to the reference as possible, that I stop having a good time and stop being actually creative. And the "mistakes" keep bothering me until I get so frustrated, that I throw away my painting. In the end of the day those differences from the photo make my painting a painting and not just another photocopy.

I've done bigger stuff, and even attempted to film, but unfortunately video of large paintings is too difficult considering the time frame and making sure the camera is always rolling.

Actually what's weird is that when I was late for school and I had like an art project(draw a flower or something) I draw rushed it with a green bullpen as I analyse the drawing of my older sister that she did as my reference(which she probably drew from a reference) and I didn't bother to shade or colour it.
I passed to my teacher and my classmate said I didn't drew it,that's when I knew that he thinks it's too good of an art for me to draw.(it was very offensive yet feels like I'm complimented.)
Edit: I think this was one of the first arts that I've ever drawn when I was a kid.
So true. A reference picture can also be used for different things, study different types of face, bodies, composition of the face, shading, anatomy, proportions or to create a new character with our own touch. Awesome message

Listening to my own voice while editing videos makes me nauseous, so I don't do it often. I do have some narrated demos on Patreon, but I'll keep those topics in mind for future videos.
Ya true.... trying to read the text and watching the video is difficult and most of the time we Missout or have to replay the video many times over ... thereby loosing the flow.

Thank you thank you thank you!! At my current place, I feel I can draw and paint really well from reference. I can make it look really realistic and just like my reference... but I can’t draw from my imagination. At all. This video shows you using a reference to make your own piece and this is exactly what I need to see and practice myself. I feel it would be the perfect stepping stone from my current point in my art journey to the next. After all if I want to even think about having a career in art, I can’t even think about copying someones photo and selling that. So, once again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

True. It's what I keep saying to my 5th graders. No one is going to go check if that tree you painted is actually next to that house. As long as your image is convincing and engaging, the likeness comes second. Big like from me for this video, and not only for the cute cat alone ;)

I think in general people want to put Art pieces into a box with a matching label instead of just enjoying the feeling they get from looking. Once you label it you negate it. BTW I love your work. Makes me want to try your pallet.

I really like your painting style. I always think of exact likenesses, celebrity or not as parlor tricks. I always like paintings where there is form and figure, as well as expression in strokes. abstract painting bores me. photo realism does too. you've found such a cool balance.

Keegan Miller I love the concept of how our brains can finish piecing an image together! That’s why I love more free painting styles. I love the painterly look and I don’t like to overwork my stuff. I love this channel for those reasons
My goal sometimes is just to get the canvas covered. If you look at the last couple of minutes of this, after I covered the whole thing, I don't see significant improvements. I don't go for as few brush strokes as possible as much as the largest brush strokes possible, which sometimes is the same thing.

He is aiming for a 3D effect (and probably doesn't know it), he kept on adding the light/shadow details as opposed just adding colours.
