    Honestly, I love this kind of painting more than ultra perfect hyper-realistic portraits. There's nothing wrong with those of course and the artists who do them are extremely talented, but for me, portraits like these with visible brush strokes and texture and bold strokes of color are so much more interesting to look at.

      the artist definitely deviated alot from his reference though. the face ended up being alot unlike the reference. e.g eyes are bigger, leaving out the upper eyelid that is so prominent in the reference, the face is rounder, which although looks more attractive, is not true to the real persons face.

As an aspiring artist, I always enjoy so much how you build your paintings, place big chunks of dark and light and handle the values, and then how you treat your colors.. makes it look so easy.. thanks for sharing and keep up the amazing work. This is how I paint...I'd have it no other way. I was teaching myself how to paint there were two ways.
    1. very detailed drawing and painting in the sections
    2. shapes....
    I chose the shape form I love bringing out something from nothing. A raw mash of nothing building into existence. I can't do that with detailed paintings.

  • @jeannette4800

    I love seeing you paint. Am amazed how much our eyes want to finish things and how rough you can leave forms and still they come alive and glow. I don't paint with oils, but I want to start. So I have a question. Do you paint just on plain masonite or do you use clear gesso to coat the surface? Would like to know. Thanks in advance! And thanks for the inspiring work. I enjoy your video's very much.

    • @LarrivaArt
      @LarrivaArt  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! The masonite is primed with a few coats of shellac. You can also use gesso, acrylic medium, pva, or really anything that will last and stop the surface from absorbing oil.

    Love watching your time lapse videos! One question, did you edit it afterwards in photoshop to make it warmer or did it look cooler in the video because of the lighting?

    • @LarrivaArt
      @LarrivaArt  5 років тому +1

      Both, in a way. I color matched the photo in photoshop to how I perceived the painting, but editing the video in the same way would have made everything too warm. So both the photo and video were done in the same light, but the photo was edited to match the painting and the video left alone so it wouldn't look weird, if that makes sense.
