- From the collection of Ben (80s_90s_00s_cars on Instagram) we have this amazing 1987 (Phase II) Renault 5 GT Turbo. Once a fire breathing hooligan wagon, now the 5 GT enjoys a quiet retirement. What is it really like to drive?

the 5 GT turbo was one of the most extreme fun drives I ever owned back in the early '90's, If you push it to the full limit which I think is fair to say you weren't really able to do here James, it out performs and out handles all other hot hatches of the day and once tweeked to 180bhp as mine was, it out performed many more high performance cars, me in my modern Porsche today would not be able to keep up with me in the '90's in that Renault! on a b road that is, mine finally blew up of course ! great video J thanks.
A lot of men of a certain age will be locking themselves away in the toilet to watch this one !
When I was 17 (now 44) I had a Fiat Uno 70SX (70 bhp) and these were loosely considered a 'warm' hatch. A 120 bhp Renault 5 GT Turbo was pure unobtainium back then!
This and the 205 GTI were brilliant backn in the day !
Comfiest seats I ever had in my little Renault 5!
What I’d give for a dream garage with a 5GT, 205 1.9Gti and an Uno turbo inside.
The 5 GT Turbo is the only production car (Group N) that ever won a World Rally Championship race (Cote d'Ivoire 1989). Quite an achievement for the old Cleon-Fonte first released in 1962 on the Floride.
I had a 1986 phase 1 in pearl white on a 'D' plate. and loved it. Drove it to within an inch of it's life for 6 months when I was a wee 19 year old in 1989. Hot starts were always an issue as the car sat right above the turbo and the fuel would evaporate. A cooling fan was added to avoid this but the fan was notorious for seizing. Also an issue was the alloy radiator if you didn't use the correct de-ionised water and furred it up internally, blocking it. Further along, had a phase 2 R5 GT Turbo in Red (1989 G) on which I swapped the radiator out almost immediately. Phase 2 had the electric windows, was a bit more refined, slightly less turbo lag, had the sharper, painted body kit, roof spoiler above the rear window, different patterns on the seats and different wheels to a phase 1. Still a nightmare on hot starts though! My final R5 GT Turbo was identical to the one featured but the Electric Blue was only available on a 1987 D or E plate (on the phase 1 it with the unpainted black plastic bodykit). Great cars to drive if you can forgive the hot start, rattles and paper thin bodywork! Now I want one again having seen this.
My brother had a MK1 Clio with a 5GT turbo engine in it, was running near 200hp and was an absolute laugh
I applaud your calm view of Audi drivers.. Which brings me to why I am not a youtuber :-)
This car is my dream car right here, I'd rather have one of theses over a high end sports car anyday.
I had one of the last ones in tungsten grey. Still the most fun car I've owned. So light and responsive, and you could drive it quick without being totally illegal. Eventually I had to sell it as I was doing long commutes, but I always let it warm up and idle before turning off, and did 63k troublefree miles on the original turbo. I did find that is was a bit sensitive to tyres - I went to Pirellis from the original Michelins, and these lasted a lot longer, but it did not grip as well at the front. An enormously fun car to punt down a lane!!
I've never clicked on a video so fast, this is my dream car and it just keeps getting more expensive, I want a H reg, white blue or red. 😍
The good old days where you drove a Gt Turbo with a spare clutch cable just in case.
This review gave me a flashback to 1989 when I was a passenger in the generation 1 GT Turbo...... which was driven by an absolute hooligan.
With 1 bar of boost from the Turbo you get the proper old school lag from these cars, and it’s brilliant! Will never part with mine.
Living in America, let alone Alaska, I've always wanted to drive one of these, and you gave me the best understanding of the car without ever seeing one. Gold Star!
I'm still from the time these were all over the classifieds for 1500 euro. Now they're close to 15.000 😂
The first car I wanted to see from the garage this is awesome, thank you, this channel is great
Thank you for always doing a proper outro at the end of each video. Let’s me watch every last bit of footage without jumping to the next video.
