  • This is the end of London station Liberty Radio. The station failed to get it's license renewed and went off air at midnight on 3rd July 2003. This is some clips from the last 2 hours of broadcasting. Liberty is one of only 6 UK radio stations not to have their license renewed.
Liberty started broadcasting on 3rd July 1995 as Viva 963, a female orientated station devised by PR consultant Lynn Franks. Due to limitations in coverage of the 963MW frequency it was also given 972MW for West London.
Viva only lasted 11 months and was sold to Mohammed Al Fayed, owner of Harrods, during his ownership it became a music station specialising in 80's and disco with several well known DJs and presenters including Simon Bates, Toby Antis, Bruno Brookes, Caron Keating and David Hamilton.
In 2000 the station was sold to Brazilian reglious organisation Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). They weren't allowed to change the station to a religious format but did broadcast programmes linked to their 'Help Centres' in the evenings.
Because of it's ownership by a religious organisation it wasn't (at the time) allowed a DAB license therefore in 2002 when it's license came up for renewal it didn't qualify for automatic renewal. When it was re-advertised it was awarded to a new station Club Asia. Liberty went off air on MW at midnight on 3rd July 2002 but continues online and on satellite
Club Asia went into administration in 2009 and was taken over by Sunrise Radio who now occupy 963 & 972MW
