  • This video takes a look at several major Goju-Ryu organizations today, and briefly covers their connections to the founder of Goju-Ryu, Miyagi Chojun Sensei. This is the first in my new series "History of Goju-Ryu", where I aim to look at the founding, features and impacts of the karate style that gave me my introduction into the karate world.

In the original cut of this video, I mistakenly claimed that Higaonna Morio's Sensei Miyagi An'ichi was a son of Miyagi Chojun Sensei. In actuality, they bear no relation. This was brought to my attention by a kind commentor.

There are many other dojo‘s across the country and on some of the United States territories. I studied under Professor Louis a Jackson who at the time was a sixth Dan Ruku Dan Kyoshi Shihan at that time before he created his own branch of that style. I kept studying under him as well as Grand Master Wilfredo Roldan 10th Dan Who is the current grandmaster of the Nisei system. I have only recently found this channel, but it is already a gem for me. I studied Goju Ryu under the Chillemi Brothers, Jim and Bob, at New York Goju Karate Association and later Bob Chillemi's American Goju Karate. As far as I know Jim Chillemi studied with Peter Urban. Regardless, great channel! Thank you!

I started learning the shotokan for about 2 years when I was 13 y.o.
After those 2 years I started goju ryu (gojukai) and I have never stopped. Now, almost 30 years later, I have the privilege of watching a young man doing what nobody has done: sharing important and authentic information about karate. Thanks.

I learned this art when I was 15 years old in Arizona. My Sensei was sensei Spalding. I worked with him for 3 years I also wrestled in high school and Junior so I Incorporated all of his teachings into my wrestling as well. I am legally blind so that means when I was training with him and I was training as a wrestler in high school I did not have contacts or glasses I was blind basically I literally lived off of what a person would do towards me I could not see eye contact I could not see anything other than the person's motions in front of me. I could not see a time clock or a ref. I just did what I was taught. With that I was able to achieve the fastest pin in middle school history in Arizona. 9.3 seconds. At the weight of 189 lbs. It's an accomplishment that I earned. I could not have done it without this practice. P.s. this was in 1999. ✌️🙏 Also look up danial Spalding. You will love it

There are 2 main Goju-kai organizations. The first one was the original pre-war Gojukai which later became the JKF Gojukai after the world. It was founded by Yogi (Chojun's student from Okinawa who went to University) together with Yamaguchi Gogen, with the blessing of Chojun Miyagi, The later/larger organization headed by Yamaguchi Gogen was a breakaway after the 2nd World War.

Shobukan was my school. VERY traditional. Many a student passed out from the intensity. Our sensei would crank the heat in Summer to make our conditions like those of Okinawa. I remember some of the masters coming over from Okinawa. Taira Sensei, Nakasone Sensei. This was in New Jersey. Never got to meet Shinjo Sensei, he passed away shortly after I started. I had heard his style was the closest to Master Miyagi's. This training saved my life...

If you are going to make a video on the "history of goju ryu organizations, The FIRST ones you should have started with are Higa Seko Sensei - who was the REAL only student to receive Shihan title from Miyagi Sensei, Then Yagi Sensei, Miyazato Sensei and Toguchi Sensei. The people you mentioned first should have been mentioned after the information of these Master who are the Pillars of Goju Ryu. Higaonna was a student of Miyazato Sensei. His organization was NOT a good place to start, because it gives him more importance than the MAIN branches. If anything, Hokama Tetsuhiro Sensei has more credence, knowledge and skill than any of the others from the second generation. Gojukai is a sub-branch and Urban's versions is an offshoot of that. You are going to have to make certain things clear in your videos regarding these issues so new prospective students have accurate perspectives. They need to be able to make decisions based on accuracy so no one is shortchanged.

During this time very few second dan and higher level kata were taught. Why not? To prevent precisely what happened later, when everybody announced that they were 10th dan Grandmasters only expert in fighting, no kata.
They had very poor to non-existent technique except for some 1st-year judo, punches and kicks. Some got killed believing they were knife proof.
