Megitsune is top 3 in most fans favourite Babymetal song lists. It's one of the quintessential Babymetal songs because it perfectly melds the kawaii and the metal in a way that most of their earlier tracks hadn't quite mastered. Megitsune is the moment that the Babymetal sound really takes shape.

the song that got me into Babymetal all those years ago.... fun edm pop to lure you in and make you drop your guard, then they hit you with a traditional Japanese inspired pig squeal Nightmare breakdown.... Leave it to the Japanese to make a young girl singing in semi monotone in black and white seem so eerie and haunting. 🤘🦊🤘

In Japan, it was once said that foxes deceive people. According to one legend, a fox would spin around with a leaf on its head and transform into a beautiful woman to deceive travelers, get them drunk and intoxicated, and take their money and goods.
The three members of BABYMETAL place their palms on their heads to represent the action of a fox transforming with a leaf on its head.
Also, the Yamato Nadeko in the lyrics is an ancient Japanese woman who is as pretty as a nadeshiko flower, who laughs with her face, cries with her heart, and endures everything, even when she is sad or in pain.
That is why the lyrics say that women are actresses, not foxes. The lyrics say "yamato nadeshiku," which I think is a coined word, but it is correctly "yamato nadeshiko. by the way,The name of the Japanese women's national soccer team "Nadeshiko Japan" is derived from this.
Also, Su-Metal's line "Nametara, ikanzeyo" is a famous line from the Tosa dialect of the Japanese yakuza film "The Life of Hanako Kiryuin," which menacingly states, "Do not disrespect women.

Loved it. NY favorite part of the song is the switch to the oriental style. Yes, we know how talented Su-Metal was at 14, but we go back further to her pre-Babymetal days. Suzuka Nakamoto got her start in Karen Girl's, a group designed to create music for anime. In the "Over the future" we see a an 8 or 9-year-old Su-Metal. She was still amazing.

    Megitsune:-
"Megitsune" (メギツネ, "Vixen") is the second major label single by the Japanese kawaii metal band Babymetal. It was released in Japan on June 19, 2013 as the fifth single from the album Babymetal. It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin.
    "Megitsune"
A figure with a kitsune (fox) mask wearing a headpiece and a black robe on a red background, holding two shamisen criss-cross behind it.
The single was first announced for a June release on April 1, 2013. The single was released in four versions: a standard edition and three limited editions. The "Ki", "Tsu", and "Ne" (Kitsune means "fox" in Japanese) limited editions included single artwork focused on Nakamoto, Mizuno, and Kikuchi respectively, and their included DVDs feature footage of two songs from each of the live performances from Live: Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse. Additionally, the single included a chance to contain a ticket to the premium event Kitsune Festival at Meguro Rock May Kan on July 14, 2013.
To promote the release, the band was featured in the June issue of Marquee and on the cover of the July issue of Hedoban, in addition to collaborating with Tower Records for the 34th rendition of the event No Music, No Idol?.
    Babymetal concert chronology:-
•Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (2013)
    •Babymetal World Tour 2014 (2014).
The Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (BABYMETAL DEATH MATCH TOUR 2013 -五月革命-, Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013 -Gogatsu Kakumei-) was a promotional concert tour by Babymetal, occurring in conjunction with the promotion of "Megitsune". The band performed four shows, with two on the final tour date, at the same venue. Customers who purchased tickets to the tour could receive an exclusive edition of the single, with a remix by Yuyoyuppe, under the name DJ'Tekina//Something.
According to Mizuno, the tour was designed to be a "training tour". During each of the four shows the three members wore stage costumes for the eras of "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" (which had become nostalgically small for them), "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!", and "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", respectively, with the final show premiering new costumes for "Megitsune".

Thanks for coming back and sharing more of your BM journey.
This one certainly is among BM fans most favorite songs.
Like you said, this was released in 2013, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the _shamizen_ japanese traditional instruments.
Song is about female empowerment and if you get to know the lyrics you'll see about it, to say it right just go google translate type the word and read the japanese side. Megitsune means female vixens, and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you, they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and that tend to confuse and men thinking they're cheating or deceiving.
GJ knowing the translation when SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" mic she's saying _"maiden shouldn't be uderstimated",_ that reffers to japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live shows instead of tanto mic, SuMetal throw a kick after saying that, she really looks cool doing it.
Pig squeal and growlings in general are pre-recorded backing track during live performance and MV, credits goes to no one special, except on specific songs like "Distortion" feat. Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy.
Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and one of the most beloved, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why you will hear her doing sound check with this song before live concerts. If you watch a live versión (not the Legend 1997 in this case) you'll feel the power of that heavy breakdown with the Kami Band, my favorite one is the Red Fox Festival with a room full of megitsune only, you can find that at Babymetal Reactor Resource channel under "All female audience" title.
This aren't the original Kami Band, these are hired actors especially for this song, and the woman you saw with the mask dancing that traditional Japanese folk song "Sakura Sakura" was also part of that dance team.
The original Kami Band show up first time at "Legend I" in 2012, none of them performed ever again altogether. The regular Kami Band are other members who joined later, so around this time they got a Kami Band on live performances.
Oh another little info, they really made a ceremony and praise to the Fox God for this song to be a successful hit, but you already know that we are -NotACult- 👀
See you next time and put your kitsune up 🦊🤘🔥

One off the reasons, I love the song is the girl-power aspect. One of your fellow reactioners recently did Meridith Brooks "Bitch" and I recommended "Megitsune" for a similarly themed song. The title "Megitsune", I believe translates to Vixen. In 2017, Mikio Fujioka, Kami band guitarist, fell from a ledge and would die from his injuries.

No, the Kami Band wasn't playing for Babymetal yet until 2014 (or 2013). This video was made earlier, and those in the background aren't the actual musicians. I believe they are actors specifically for the video.
I believe Su-metal was 13 in this video, and Moametal and Yuimetal were either 11 or 12.
Other members of the One will give you much more detailed information that I can. But I really appreciate this reaction and his insights. I think many people don't take 'kids' singing very seriously, and that sometimes is a barrier for them to experience something new and different. By Western eyes, at least. There are some people who were already fans of Suzuka Nakamoto from the previous idol group she was in at 9 years old (Karen Girls), and some even farther back. That's the biggest difference in Japanese and western cultures. Idol fans in japan will fanboy/fangirl over idols, regardless of the age of the idol.
But as someone else already mentioned, Suzuka already had a presence on stage even as young as 7.

This isn't with The Kami Band, they only play in concert. The band here are dancers miming and the album recordings are made with many other session musicians.
Megitsune (vixen) is regularly voted the fan's favourite and is another of BM's female "empowerment" songs, subverting many traditional Japanese attitudes to women. Right from the start Moa and Yui pull Su's obi to release her so she can dance with energetic high leg lifts which contrast with the restrained and restricted movements of the traditional dance in the breakdown. The kimonos, instruments, and setting in a temple all add to the traditional elements. In Japan the fox is believed to be a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes and actresses in the way they have to be different things in different situations and are often crying inside while they are smiling outside. Su, Moa and Yui mime wearing a mask with their hands and also putting on make up which shows how women have to hide their true faces.
The breakdown music is a traditional song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom), but this is also subverted with the heavy metal riff and Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox) rather than "sakura, sakura". Also, Megitsune was written at a time when BM were breaking away from their parent idol group, Sakura Gakuin, and the Fox God is BM's patron deity so it's speculated that singing "kitsune" is expressing their growing independence from Sakura Gakuin. You've also got to include the "super lady" concept of Sakura Gakuin which is hinted at in the lyrics, but there's a bit of tension there as BM are maybe down playing it a bit and emphasizing being true to yourself.
Su's expression of female strength reaches a peak when she shouts
"Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" or "Maidens should not be underestimated", and does a front kick in concerts or here reveals her microphone to have a knife inside.

Great reaction and keep up the excellent mentoring and guidance Kevin. 'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for favourite song. It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks were so prominent in this video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody ("crying at heart, smiling at face") - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The breakdown with the pig squeals uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
As you said - and I'm glad you were able to tell Tim - when Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. I think you have already been told the guys at the back waving the traditional instruments (and their hair) about were not the Kami Band - they were dancers belonging to the company of the lady in the fox mask who did the fan dance during the breakdown
(Rick Wagner has said who she is and the name of her dance troupe - and as he said, you will not see the Kami Band in any official video unless it uses live footage from a concert. By the same token, you will not hear the Kami Band in the studio recordings, they only play live shows. The only known exception is guitarist Leda Cygnus has played guitar and bass in a handful of the songs for the album versions).
I agree with MartinMetal - I hope you will also react to a live version. Can I suggest the live at Red Fox Festival 2017 where they had an all female audience (very fitting for this song to be the opening number there). Do a quick search for the video titles "Me-Git-Sune All Female Audience 2017" on the Babymetal Reactor Resource channel.

I see "Megitsune" in the top 5 for sure and I'd say top 3 easily. It's also their most played live song with 242 times.
This music video is a masterpiece in my opinion. And a must watch. Love the cinematography, the location where they are performing, the anticipation images from the Fushimi Inari shrine (even the girls thanked the director of the MV for going to Kyoto to film them).
These locations became pilgrimage destinations for BABYMETAL fans:
    - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo. This is a stage where music and dances are performed during festivals.
    - The shrine right before the breakdown with the orange-ish torii gates is the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto.
    Until next time!

And yet Babymetal keep the kawaii coming. The parts of Yui and Moa playing a game, they just gave them a game and filmed them. Yui and Moa really are close friends. Kawaiiiiiiiiii. As well as the part where Moa seems to float across the floor and crashes into Yui. Moa said the floor was very slippery and she really just slid into Yui. Which as you can tell from the video, they got a big kick out of it. Overall, this is Babymetals most performed song. An easy fan favorite. Su's vocal power shines during this song. It is one of the hardest Babymetal song to sing. Which of course means it's the song Su warms up with. Su is special in every way. Her talent was apparent early in life. The skills she has learned over the years continue to impress. Enjoy the rest of your journey through the foxhole and into the Babymetal galaxy of music.

👍 Great reaction guys and ditto about these young ladies and their Kami’s Kevin😉
Also great insight Tim concerning your progression into the world of BabyMetal. Kevin is a good mentor.

Curious what live version you’d suggest. So many good ones. I like the one at SSA2015 (theatrical and hyped up crowd) and Metrock (festival crowd is so hype here) and the all female concert, but there are others on par with these

@@FusionPonyTailRed Fox Festival all Female audience is great , SSA entrance is awesome and MetRock the energy and audience reactiion has to be seen to be believed. The one's with the interactions when Su speaks to a huge audience and Su has them in the palm of her hand doing exactly what she wants to do are mindblowing .
I think there all good but certain one's just stand out a litte bit more
Not forgetting Su and Moa's shenanigans 🤣 I suppose MetRock 2015 no special stages, no special lighting , just them , the Kamis and a audience to show how awesome they are 😁🤘🦊

Another great reaction, I like your style with Kevin having knowledge of the song and Tim reacting to it. You really need to see them sing this live to fully appreciate the power of this song.
The girls did a commentary on MV. It has English subtitles. When you listen to it, you'll heard part of their true personalities; the difference between their on-stage persona and how young they are. ua-cam.com/video/tXCC93Txtnw/v-deo.html

On the same side of BabyMetal, maybe going more 'Kawaii' have you seen BabyBeard? Big buff bearded dude, with 2 smaller Japanese girls, full Kawaii outfits all round, and he growls and screams in the songs too. Worth it for the entertainment alone.

They are not the Kami band, but actors. Kami band is not featured in any music videos (apart from live ones of course), and with very few exceptions don't play in the album versions of the songs.
For me, Megitsune, including this MV, is the opus magnum of BABYMETAL.
