Great tips! Just wanted to give my input. I recommend using the MKV file instead of MP4 to avoid losing hours of footage. If, for some reason, your storage drive gets full while recording then you will lose the entire recording. Any type of crash can also cause you to lose a lot of progress which is frustrating. It takes 5-10 seconds to convert your MKV file into MP4 in OBS by going into File -> Remux Recording -> Selecting The Video. It really isn't worth immediately outputting into MP4 if it means you *could* lose hours of amazing footage. Other than that this is an amazing video! Thanks for the tips!

Record in mkv like it recommends, every device and program will recognize it anyways. 2) Keep it simple, just put the output back to simple and select "indistinguishable quality". That's it. Changing settings when you have no idea what they mean is usually a bad idea.
Yes, definitely. Was the case for me. I have a GTX 960 so it can't really handle both game and encoding. I do however have a 6700k with HT so x264 works smoothly for me.
0:40 --> This need to be setting to max resolution what is recording because someone can have 1920x1080 screen resolution and then recording game in 1366x768 so in this case 1st need be 1366x768 and 2nd resolution what he need to be on YT with not to low or not to high from 1st. Like 2nd can be 1280x720 or 1920x1080 with bicubic scaling filter.

I downloaded the most recent version of OBS, and in output >Encoder> I don’t have NIVIDIA but I have different option, which one you think is equivalent? SVT-AVI, AOM-AVI , QUICKsync H.264. I think ADM-AVI is the closest to yours but the options underneath is bit different. I don’t have preset option. So can’t choose ‘ Max quality’. At the end, no improvement for the blurry text. Any suggestion? Thanks
its because you dont have a recent gpu Nvidia GPU so you cant use the nvidia encoder, i think the preset option is exclusive to gpu encoders such as AMD h.264 and NVIDIA h.264
Please don't use MP4 to record, use MKV, I lost two hours of stream recording when I had it set to record with MP4 when OBS crashed. If you use MKV it keeps what has been recorded up to that point.

I was wondering if you could make an updated version for 2023? This video helped me a lot a few months ago, but I tried to experiment with other settings, and they've since updated the app, so I can no longer get the good quality from this video, since there are more options now. So please, if you get around to it :) Or you could just tell me the new settings here, idk

In case someone wants a smaller file size: Tried the settings, 10s video size is 1.16MB. But If I use x264 & Rate control CRF = 17 the file size drops to 0,25MB & the quality is fine (I recorded exel sheet & the data was readable). I wonder if even a smaller file size is possible with NVENC?
If you output scale resolution to 2560x1440p or higher, when you upload to UA-cam you're gonna get the VP09 codec treatment. Otherwise you can have the highest settings ever, but AV01 default codec on UA-cam is garbage. Also my CQ level is at 28 lol, which is close to 30 which is the "worse" quality and anything lower than 14 you won't notice. I promise you if you saw my videos you'd think they were high quality. The main reason being doing the fake 1440p output to force trigger the VP09 codec on UA-cam.
it works perfect but for anyone who doesn't have the right driver for the setting he reccomends like the encoder setting i reccomend to use QuickSync H.264 and it works very smoothly but all the other settings are PERFECT THANK YOU MAAN
I have a rx 580 4gb and tested the AMD HW H.256(HEVC) encoder and when I recorded it was black and windows asked to buy soemthing to be able to play the video. So I just switched to the H.264 and it was pretty good looking with the same encoder settings you listed.

NOTE ! If your source (like PS4 for example) only outputs 30 FPS, and you set "Common FPS Values" on 60 FPS, OBS will clone every frame, so you'll get doubled frames. So if you are not sure what FPS your source puts out, record a short video in OBS at 60 FPS, open it in your video editor and go frame by frame. If every frame is doubled, means your source only outputs 30 fps, and there is no point recording at 60 fps with OBS, because you'll get bigger files but not much better quality.
Are you sure about CQP? because im using CBR and good but some games like mk11 and the evil within 1 are like 80 cpu and 80 gpu,you think cqp is better than cbr?.If that helps me new sub.
so im recording stuff just cuz i like to record some moments on my games, yea? but i am running out of hard drive space despite it being 720p 30fps. whenever i stream several hours on youtube and download it later its a way smaller file, but i dont like streaming all the time. how do i get small video files like youtube streams without streaming? is it even possible?

Oh dude I can't thank you enough. I had problems with recording the game "Alicia Online". I have installed and uninstalled many free screen recorders but I've always knew that obs is the best. It had no time limits, it has everything! And at that point I didn't know what to do! This tutorial is surely the best. You deserve a lot!

Would you recommend using H.264 for GPU intensive games rather than nvenc? One game I'm playing atm uses like 90% GPU but only 3% CPU

2:50 --> mkv is best and when enging recording then just repacking record to mp4 via obs.
5:52 --> Preset Max quality and performance giving this same quality on NVENC (new).
Psycho Visual Tuning giving worse quality in dynamic scenes.

What if CQP isn't an option in Rate Control?
So I have an rx 6800 and the quality of the amd equivalent is absolut garbage before with my rtx 3060 ti the quality was super good

Please don't use MP4 to record, use MKV, I lost two hours of stream recording when I had it set to record with MP4 when OBS crashed. If you use MKV it keeps what has been recorded up to that point.

if you need mp4
you can always remux to mp4 with obs (remux does not change your quality, just changes a container)

for some reason the only option for encoder that i have is x264.... still this sorta helped
Guys if you have access to anything for the encoder with H.265 It is better and faster that H.264. doesn't matter Nivdia, Intel, Or AMD

3:05 I read on google that mkv can produce higher quality videos than mp4. Have you ever noticed a difference? I record Elder Scrolls Online mmorpg.

I opened up a new project and deleted the area where you "paint" the soft and I don't know how to make it co back!! Lol
