Not just a spring compressor that is scary.. anything with potential energy is scary. A car in the air has potential energy. I don't just leave it on a jack, I will use jack stands AND the jack AND put the wheels under it if they've been taken off. (This is mainly for brake, suspension, oil change work).
I did an all you can carry, and promptly removed the hood from a 1964 pickup truck and placed everything, including an LT1 Corvette block. The owner called the cops because we had an awesome amount of stuff, needless to say the cops sided with us, and applauded our creativity.
