Best hip-hop song in the last 10 years IMO. Never come across a rapper who has the ability to tell a story so descriptively, but retain lyrical complexity and decent flow.

As a big fan of Radiohead, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, I don't listen to rap often...saw this CD at Wal-Mart the other day and thought "What the heck? I'll give this guy a try."
Not only is this the best rap album I've ever heard, but this is one of the best albums I've ever heard in any genre. If anybody has recommendations for rap albums I should try next, please let me know!

this album is undoubtedly a 10 in 2021. it’s aged so beautifully. none of the songs get stale (even the popular ones). it’s theme is still relatable and probably will be for the decade at least
Going back and re-listening to all of Kendrick’s albums makes you realize that good kid maad city might have the most longevity. TPAB is great but I enjoy more songs on this album so much more
Abso-fucking-lutely. I was wrong about tpab. It sounds great but there are songs that I don't remember so well or there is so much being said that i can't appreciate the album fully. Production wise & writing wise it was a really smartly written album but concept wise & overall considering songs, gkmc is definitely better

Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst. Best song I have ever heard, hands down. Its impact on me as a person and as a lover of music and Kendrick is incredible. Nobody can tell a story with that kind of lyrical genius and keep me wanting more for 12 minutes, and I find a new line every time. Its astounding and I listen to it every day. Inspires me to do the same.

I love Chance, great rapper, its really a Golden Age for hip hop, so much amazing music.
What a great album, I'm a metalhead and a "progressive-rockhead", I never cared about Hip hop, I stumble upon Swimming pools, I loved it, I gave this album a try, I don't regret at all, one of the best albums I've ever heard.

I like the the normal cover more than the deluxe version.
Leland Cornelius the deluxe version is kind of eerie if you think about it. Kendrick and his gang banging homies would ride around in his mom's tinted window van. Imagine seeing that van right outside your house. It's kind of a last thing you see before you die type thing.

I think you completely misunderstood the hook in Real. Kendrick is criticizing the attitude of Compton culture, particularly outgoing women. He's very critical of their propensity to call themselves "real". It's purposefully vapid. He thinks they are foolish and misguided, and made a hook that mirrors that.
my dislike of the hook wasn't really having to do with any kind of understanding of it. just thought the singing sounded redundant and silly, that's all.
Again, I think it was intended. Purposefully simple and redundant. I liken it to the hook in High School - Pro Era. It fits the song.

This album is FANTASTIC. Never before have i seen an album's entirety flow as a story. 10/10 . I think Anthony is too hard on hooks.

I really like the beat at the end of the track M.A.A.D. city and how it sounded like classic 90's west coast beats. It could've easily been the beat of early Snoop or Dre. It even more fit that dark gang life vibe that he was trying to convey in the track.

Mohammad M Damn was a very mainstream move for Kendrick to release, especially following up one of the most abstract and comprehensive hip-hop releases of all time. And if you think DAMN had a better executed concept than GKMC you need to relisten. Personally Section.80 and his mixtapes are the only projects I like less than DAMN. LOVE, LOYALTY, and GOD really took away from the whole album

I've said this too..if Kendrick puts out 3 more albums in his career that "top" GKMC and TPAB then he'll be the greatest to have done it. Especially in terms of substance, lyrics, theme, production etc.

TPAB is the highest rated hiphop album ever by critics. If he releases a couple more good to great albums he'd be top 3 all time in my opinion. Cause he already has 2 instant classics, and great mixtapes under his belt. Only a handful of rappers have 2 Classic albums. People set the bar wayyy too high these days on best rappers all time. I am still not over that gunshot at about a minute into the song. Kendrick stops rapping while the instrumentals just continue. Really adds impact and meaning to the song

Sing About Me,I'm Dying Of Thirst genuinely changed how I look at certain things in life and his thoughts and point of view on death and his wordplay on the song interests me greatly. (Definitely my favorite song on the album and the length of it only made it better for me)

As a metalhead who rarely goes out of his way to listen to other stuff, I decided to finally give Kendrick Lamar a try. I listened to Section 80 and GKMC, and I’m upset that I’ve been missing out on this art. Kendrick has an amazing ability to write compelling and in depth stories in his lyrics and flows while not giving up awesome instrumentals and just overall catchy music. It’s artists like this that make me wanna venture off into other hip hop

You know an album like this has to be somewhere along the lines of amazing when it's like amongst a wide general range of people. The ones who strictly listen to the mainstream/radio bullshit without any musical insight, the ones who are not easily impressed and focus only on lyrics, the ones focused on instrumentals.
The dense & intellectual listeners alike. I mean I see people who don't generally listen to hip hop yet come to love this album. I think this means something in itself, this takes skill. I loved so many things about this album, you pointed out all the strong pointers. 9/10

I don’t think people talk enough about how swimming pools is meant to kinda satirize the “Trap party vibes” that people generally associate drugs with. When the trap parts start, he talks about getting sucked into the party (a common stage for substance abuse) but then the trap parts stop when Kendrick starts to reflect about his choices.
Sing About Me brings me to the verge of tears, and I'm Dying Of Thirst brings me past it.

This has bangers, TPAB has the best flow for me from front to back, but Damn is without a doubt for me the favorite for casual listening. Each song in Damn can listened to independently and still fit well on a playlist with other songs.

I think that Kendrick Lamar will always be held as the golden child of rap, and that no matter what he does he will be hailed for his golden tracks, instead of looking at his less esteemed bad works. All artists are susceptible to doing filler tracks and bad co-tracks.

For me, this is a heavy 9 for me. Good story, progression, rapping, beats, how the album came together... I could listen to the whole album for hours on end, i've done it before.
The storytelling, flow, wordplay, rhyme schemes and production on this album make it a certified classic. Kendrick Lamar will go down alone of the greatest ever to grace the mic when all is said and done.

I think honestly this would be my number 2 favourite album right under DSotM. It may even be Hip-Hop's answer to it since the themes of fear, money, losing ones mind, death all seem to be there. I think it took elements of everything that was on the radio at the time and totally made it work within context of his story telling which is one of the best things I ever heard. It's like an aural movie dude.

This probably is my favorite album of all time, still rings through my headphones on a daily. So many classics on here Backseat Freestyle, Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe, Poetic Justice, m.a.a.d city, Money Trees, Swimming Pools etc...but I think Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst is my favorite track. The story telling on that is on another level, dude put Maya Angelou on a track. I love GKMC, awesome review man.

love this album to death. Everything about this album is almost perfect. The only thing i didnt like was that Poetic Justice sounded somewhat out of place. I've tried to listen to it many times but something puts me off about that track and only that track.
It's because drake is on it, making it worse
I really hate drake as much as the next guy, but there was something really off-putting about the song for me and i cant place a source for it and it didnt involve Drake. I actually think he did okay here.

That's crazy poetic justice was the first song I've heard of Kendrick and my friend played it in his car and he had sub woofers and it was the craziest song I've ever heard at the time. The bass was fucking wild

Maad City is for me but that would probably be third behind Sing About Me. The passion he has on Maad City is just crazy and Sing About Me is just so emotionally powerful

I think it deserves a 10/10 just because you can tell how much time and detail k dot put into the album, how he took these real life stories/situation and can make you visualize it how he contrast dark situations into lighter situations for example 'Art of peer Pressure is a darker version of 'Money Trees, the good and bad of home invasion in Kendrick eyes as well as 'Sherane is the darker side of he feels about sherane compared to lighter 'Poetic justice Kendrick just perfectly portrays emotion
There's a track from this album called "Collect Calls" which is an Itunes exclusive, this track is easily my favorite track from this album.

Sing about me is insanely good! Just like the rest of this album. Transcends genre, and it will carry its spirit of time and place with it into the future. Kendrick is human in the first place and that's what makes it more mature than Ready to Die and Illmatic, not to gore anyone's ox, I love those albums just as much as the next person. Kendrick has a Dark side of the Moon in him. one love
I know this comment is old but I feel this way too. He somehow bridges ideologies from every aspect of music. He is a true student of the game.
