My sincere apologies to all my members and viewers who were unable to leave a comment when the video first posted. Apparently, and unbeknownst to me, I had switched the comments off. Because all the members of my channel are able to view the videos prior to making it public, they will very often leave comments. Well, after 4 days of the private posting and with over 130 views, there were no comments which is unheard of, and with that many views, there should have been at least a dozen or more views but there were none. It should have been at that point I would have suspected something was up, but my simple mind did not put 2 plus 2 together. At 8 o'clock this morning Mona called to tell me the comments were switched off, and because Charlie and I were out wrangling bees, I could not change anything. Thankfully, when we got back to Charlie's I was able to go back in and allow comments. Again, I'm very sorry that mistake happened, and hopefully, it won't happen again. Happy Anniversary to you and your wife. I am always delighted to watch your videos as I have learned much about bee keeping, rendering, wax rendering. It reminds me of an elder friend who kept bees for his blueberry and strawberry fields, and pear orchard. I never really knew what he did with the wax...but we loved to go picking all three fruits and buy his honey knowing that the taste came from the efforts of his workers. Thanks for those memories...and the education you are passing along to us.

Hello! I just wanted to give you a tip that if you were looking for food grade buckets, check with a grocery store that has cake decorating in it. I am a decorator for a small mam&pop grocery store and we get 5 gallon buckets of icing and when we use it up, we give the buckets away and they come with a seal tight lid. If you told the grocery store that these were for the Abby for the honeybees, they would probably give them to you as well. Or sell them very cheap. I enjoy your videos - we use to keep bees when we lived on acreage. We moved into a village and it’s not worth it when all the neighbors use pesticides. 🐝❤🐝

While preparing themselves for winter, they propolize everything that they encounter. At least give it a try with some traps to start (10 maybe?). You can do so much good with propolis!! God bless!

Suggestion....make a half-cone of metal screen to set over the bucket and outlet. Keeps bees out, you have full access to the valve, and Bobs your uncle. Let Brother Lazareth (sp?) know that he is most appreciated for his multitudinous skills from CA!

I love ❤ Bees Wax. When I go to buy candles, I always buy Bees Wax ones. I also use it on leather handbags, leather shoes etc. Helps protect them & to repel water off them.

Good morning Mr.Ed Congratulations to u and Ms. Mona! Janet and I have been married 46 years! We are very happy. Three childern Janet was a stay-at-home mom! Her love helped put me thru medical school to be a GP MD. Retired, and we have a farm called Applewood Ranch in San Antonio, Texas. We have lots of beehives on the farm. God bless you and Ms. Mona! I'd be McGuyvering up a custom metal screen with a handle to fit into the bottom of that kettle. Get all melted, then hook onto the handle to pull the screen out, and most of that debris will come out with it! Then you'll only need to worry about filtering out the finer contaminates. Not to mention... less clean-up!
I actually came up with that idea a few years back and started working on a screen that could accomplish the task. It did work, but I still had issues of trash in the wax and it was very difficult to lift the screen from the kettle. In the end, the method I use now, just leaving all the trash in the kettle contained by a screen in the throat of the gate, has been the simplest and least amount of work. Hi Mr Ed… I’ve been watching your content for years on & off!… but, I subscribed today because I just like the whole concept & what you do! I’m not trying to make more work for you, but I know that you make candles! Have you ever considered casting the candles for the UCO lanterns? It is a unique candle for emergency & camping lanterns. They have a tea light size & a small pillar size candle lantern! It would be a beneficial & easy way to help many people with beeswax candles (which are very hard to find for these lanterns). I’m sure that a cheaper alternative to the high market price & helping the Abbey at the same time is a win-win! I know that I would buy them without a question, as I am 62 now & very low income. Just a thought…

8:45 - is there some sort of cover you could put over the bucket and pipe to prevent them from getting at it while the hot wax is pouring out? Might help a few of them have it not "go well" for them ;)
Any cover that would be place over the bucket as the wax is dripping would hinder that flow. What I did to prevent the bees from getting into the wax was place a fan near by and blow the air towards the dripping wax. It was strong enough to keep the bees away and still allow the wax to flow unobstructed. Thanks for watching and for your suggestion. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Would the cappings be a good approximation of wax production? The combs are just started with your prep right? Maybe cappings plus X% of the comb wax? I was thinking maybe a wipe of the buckets with a paper towel with cooking oil would let the wax loose. Shouldn't be enough to contaminate the wax I don't think.
I never considered an equation for wax production, as long as the bees produce it, I'm ecstatic. It is difficult sometimes to get the wax out of the buckets, especially when the blocks are very large, but for the most part it is simple enough. These capping came from about 120 deep honey supers, a process that took place over a period of 2 weeks. I would go and get about 25 supers and run them, and then go and get about 25 more. Check out the link below showing one of running of our honey supers. This year we had about 200 hives which is more than I want. I like having about 150 and that's where I'll be once I have sold some of the colonies. If the last block you opened was not the first one you made, it makes sense that it would need longer to harden. I also think it could be because there’s too much wax in the bucket, it held more of the heat than the smaller blocks
Mr Jeff, got a question. I have about 3 acres of land near the Red River in Pineville area. I am currently working on harvesting trees and I grow a bunch of Kahali Ginger…trying to start a nursery. Anyway, don’t know if this is a thing, but I would like to see if I could make a little passive income. Either storing boxes (property was a car wash years ago, so well drained concrete), letting a keeper set boxes to feed, or really anything…ha! I’m willing to learn to “watch” the boxes and would like to have bees one day, just don’t have the money currently. Appreciate it and your channel, it’s very informative. Best✌🏼🤙🏼😊
Awesome idea on generating some income. I would suggest locating a bee club in Alexandria or Pineville and present your idea to them. Who knows, it may present itself as a good thing to a beekeeper. I find it very hard when I have to go through hard times, I’m going through something hard now. For some people it might not be a big deal for me but I overthink everything, get overwhelmed easily and stressed out easily. There’s really nobody that I can talk to, nobody that will really understand. Most people are too busy to talk and not really caring. Life is full of challenges every day and lots of times I just wish life would pass by even though I have everything in life and have good health.

I love your wax videos especially. In fact it was searching for wax videos several years that led me to your channel, and I’ve been here ever since. One question: I know that bees use the honey when you have it in the hives as a base on the frames. Will they reclaim wax that is left out, or would they just clean the honey off and leave the wax?
What ever the reason that lead you to my channel, I'm very happy for it as you have been subscribed for 6 years and that's a very long time. Like you, and a whole lot of other viewers, I too love making and showing the wax rendering videos. It's just so cool taking beeswax and making these beautiful blocks of wax from them. To answer your question, the bees are for the most part getting the honey from the wax. However, I can not say with all certainty they are not taking a very small amount of the wax as well. The manufacturer of the kettle is Vulcan, and they do make smaller versions. However, due to the cost of them, I would highly recommend you look into used kitchen equipment and find a used one, very often they are quite affordable. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
I'm always amazed how you get the wax out of the buckets. All of that horribly nasty wax I bought (165lbs) was murder to get out of the buckets. I actually split around a third of the buckets, beating them with a 4lb dead blow hammer. The wax was a puke brown. Three hours down, three hours back. A terrible waste of time, money and effort.
Oh, that stinks. Reminds me of a load of sheeps wool I once got, where the shearer mixed the hair sheep shearing with some truly lovely Merino crosses.....
It may be because the buckets are food grade the wax blocks come out so easily. How horrible a story you had, I can only imagine your frustration at the entire process. God's peace Jay. Mr. Ed

what kinda buckets are those that you use for pouring the wax into? ive been using orange home depot buckets, with a l id over top to cool, and every time they crack and the wax gets stuck to the side of the bucket. makes for a heck of a time trying to get the wax out without breaking up everywhere.
They are 7 gallon, food grade plastic bucket that contained coconut oil used in our Monk Soap operation. Whenever I need buckets I ask for them and they give them to me. Yes, St. Joseph Abbey gives tours. I am VERY familiar with Subiaco as I spent many weeks with the monks over the years helping build and install the monk's choir as well as various work inside the monastery and the school itself. It reminds me of an elder friend who kept bees for his blueberry and strawberry fields, and pear orchard. I never really knew what he did with the wax...but we loved to go picking all three fruits and buy his honey knowing that the taste came from the efforts of his workers. Thanks for those memories...and the education you are passing along to us.

I just wanted to give you a tip that if you were looking for food grade buckets, check with a grocery store that has cake decorating in it.
I am a decorator for a small mam&pop grocery store and we get 5 gallon buckets of icing and when we use it up, we give the buckets away and they come with a seal tight lid.
If you told the grocery store that these were for the Abby for the honeybees, they would probably give them to you as well. Or sell them very cheap.
I enjoy your videos - we use to keep bees when we lived on acreage. We moved into a village and it’s not worth it when all the neighbors use pesticides.

Remember the propolis traps. This is the best time to place them. While preparing themselves for winter, they propolize everything that they encounter. At least give it a try with some traps to start (10 maybe?). You can do so much good with propolis!!

Suggestion....make a half-cone of metal screen to set over the bucket and outlet. Keeps bees out, you have full access to the valve, and Bobs your uncle.

Wow that is a lot of wax. You scored on wax. I would say don't work too hard but it would not go far with you. I think you thrive on working. I have a feeling your retirement will be spent working. I love ❤ Bees Wax. When I go to buy candles, I always buy Bees Wax ones. I also use it on leather handbags, leather shoes etc. Helps protect them & to repel water off them.

Good morning Mr.Ed Congratulations to u and Ms. Mona! Janet and I have been married 46 years! We are very happy. Three childern Janet was a stay-at-home mom! Her love helped put me thru medical school to be a GP MD. Retired, and we have a farm called Applewood Ranch in San Antonio, Texas. We have lots of beehives on the farm. God bless you and Ms. Mona! That is a lot of wax and a lot of work. Ya'll have a wonderful weekend yeah hear.
I'd be McGuyvering up a custom metal screen with a handle to fit into the bottom of that kettle. Get all melted, then hook onto the handle to pull the screen out, and most of that debris will come out with it! Then you'll only need to worry about filtering out the finer contaminates. Not to mention... less clean-up!
I actually came up with that idea a few years back and started working on a screen that could accomplish the task. It did work, but I still had issues of trash in the wax and it was very difficult to lift the screen from the kettle. In the end, the method I use now, just leaving all the trash in the kettle contained by a screen in the throat of the gate, has been the simplest and least amount of work. Hi Mr Ed… I’ve been watching your content for years on & off!… but, I subscribed today because I just like the whole concept & what you do!
I’m not trying to make more work for you, but I know that you make candles! Have you ever considered casting the candles for the UCO lanterns? It is a unique candle for emergency & camping lanterns. They have a tea light size & a small pillar size candle lantern!
It would be a beneficial & easy way to help many people with beeswax candles (which are very hard to find for these lanterns). I’m sure that a cheaper alternative to the high market price & helping the Abbey at the same time is a win-win!
I know that I would buy them without a question, as I am 62 now & very low income. Just a thought…

8:45 - is there some sort of cover you could put over the bucket and pipe to prevent them from getting at it while the hot wax is pouring out? Might help a few of them have it not "go well" for them ;)
Any cover that would be place over the bucket as the wax is dripping would hinder that flow. What I did to prevent the bees from getting into the wax was place a fan near by and blow the air towards the dripping wax. It was strong enough to keep the bees away and still allow the wax to flow unobstructed. Thanks for watching and for your suggestion. God's peace.

Some people use a 5 gallon paint strainer bag to filter the drained hot wax.

Would the cappings be a good approximation of wax production? The combs are just started with your prep right? Maybe cappings plus X% of the comb wax?
I was thinking maybe a wipe of the buckets with a paper towel with cooking oil would let the wax loose. Shouldn't be enough to contaminate the wax I don't think.
I never considered an equation for wax production, as long as the bees produce it, I'm ecstatic. It is difficult sometimes to get the wax out of the buckets, especially when the blocks are very large, but for the most part it is simple enough. That’s a great wax harvest ,how many colonies or frames of honey did that take to get ? How many hives are you running 2023/24 season ?
These capping came from about 120 deep honey supers, a process that took place over a period of 2 weeks. I would go and get about 25 supers and run them, and then go and get about 25 more. Check out the link below showing one of running of our honey supers. This year we had about 200 hives which is more than I want. I like having about 150 and that's where I'll be once I have sold some of the colonies. Have you ever thought about saving some of the water you pour out from the process to feed the hives over the winter? Just a thought.
It just is not possible, unless it was frozen, to keep the mixture as it would go rancid. It's just simpler to feed them right away. If the last block you opened was not the first one you made, it makes sense that it would need longer to harden. I also think it could be because there’s too much wax in the bucket, it held more of the heat than the smaller blocks

I have about 3 acres of land near the Red River in Pineville area. I am currently working on harvesting trees and I grow a bunch of Kahali Ginger…trying to start a nursery.
Anyway, don’t know if this is a thing, but I would like to see if I could make a little passive income. Either storing boxes (property was a car wash years ago, so well drained concrete), letting a keeper set boxes to feed, or really anything…ha!
I’m willing to learn to “watch” the boxes and would like to have bees one day, just don’t have the money currently.

I find it very hard when I have to go through hard times, I’m going through something hard now. For some people it might not be a big deal for me but I overthink everything, get overwhelmed easily and stressed out easily. There’s really nobody that I can talk to, nobody that will really understand. Most people are too busy to talk and not really caring. Life is full of challenges every day and lots of times I just wish life would pass by even though I have everything in life and have good health.

I love your wax videos especially. In fact it was searching for wax videos several years that led me to your channel, and I’ve been here ever since. One question: I know that bees use the honey when you have it in the hives as a base on the frames. Will they reclaim wax that is left out, or would they just clean the honey off and leave the wax?
What ever the reason that lead you to my channel, I'm very happy for it as you have been subscribed for 6 years and that's a very long time. Like you, and a whole lot of other viewers, I too love making and showing the wax rendering videos. It's just so cool taking beeswax and making these beautiful blocks of wax from them. To answer your question, the bees are for the most part getting the honey from the wax. However, I can not say with all certainty they are not taking a very small amount of the wax as well. What do you do with the rendered wax? Could you refine it another time for a more pure wax?
I will still need to render the wax once more to make it clean enough to use on our foundations next year, first video link below, and that is what I primarily use the wax for. What is the cook pot equipment you use for separating the wax, where might I purchase something like that in smaller version?
The manufacturer of the kettle is Vulcan, and they do make smaller versions. However, due to the cost of them, I would highly recommend you look into used kitchen equipment and find a used one, very often they are quite affordable. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

I'm always amazed how you get the wax out of the buckets. All of that horribly nasty wax I bought (165lbs) was murder to get out of the buckets. I actually split around a third of the buckets, beating them with a 4lb dead blow hammer. The wax was a puke brown. Three hours down, three hours back. A terrible waste of time, money and effort.

It may be because the buckets are food grade the wax blocks come out so easily. How horrible a story you had, I can only imagine your frustration at the entire process. God's peace Jay.

What do you do with your blocks of wax? Do you use them yourselves for things like waterproofing, soaps, and candles or do you sell them?

what kinda buckets are those that you use for pouring the wax into? ive been using orange home depot buckets, with a l id over top to cool, and every time they crack and the wax gets stuck to the side of the bucket. makes for a heck of a time trying to get the wax out without breaking up everywhere.
They are 7 gallon, food grade plastic bucket that contained coconut oil used in our Monk Soap operation. Whenever I need buckets I ask for them and they give them to me. It is relatively easy getting the wax out of them, but from time to time, I get difficult ones that cause me to work getting them out. Thanks for watching. God's peace Dan.

Good morning from Odessa Florida. How long did it take to bees to clean up the buckets?

Good morning David. My prayers go out to all Floridians who are in the path of Hurricane Helene, but it looks like Odessa may escape a lot of the damage. Within 2 days all the honey water that was poured out on the ground was gone as well as the buckets cleaned up. Thank you for your anniversary wishes and for taking the time to watch the video, and you may want to take a look at tomorrows video, it too is about wax melting but using a solar wax melter. Yes it will. For me, there is nothing prettier than a brand new frame with brand new honey and wax on it. It is one of my biggest joys of being a beekeeper that I have. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Jeff, what liquid do you use in the jacket of your heated honey tank? Water or oil? If oil, what type and has it ever gone rancid? Thank you for your videos. I always learn something from them.
I use distilled water, it's simple, cheap, and if spilled, it drys up without making a mess. Yes, St. Joseph Abbey gives tours. I am VERY familiar with Subiaco as I spent many weeks with the monks over the years helping build and install the monk's choir as well as various work inside the monastery and the school itself. I consider so many of the monks there my brothers and still maintain a relationship with most of them. Just ask a few of the older monks there if they know me. Why do you not do multiple buckets melted at once, and just swap out the bucket at the spout as you fill them?
Mostly because of the amount of debris that is in the wax. I can not imagine how difficult it would be to strain the liquid if the kettle was completely full. As it is, doing one load at a time is not the easiest thing to accomplish. Thanks for watching. God's peace Tiana.
