One of my girls is a very big licky pig or kissy. The running joke at my place is that she's checking to make sure we're correctly seasoned :D
I've taken my Teddy to the vet before and they never mentioned the crusty ears. She has dry skin, so I spray and rub in a little aqua spray, but her ears always look really gross inside. I'm going to try to gently clean out her ears tonight. Thank you so much for sharing this!

He's absolutely adorable! The more videos I see about boy piggies the less I want one. Poor little dude. One of my girls has an attitude like Heisenberg. When I do nail trims and check ups she can be a bit nippy, nothing bad but when I'm done she always gives kisses. Its like they're saying "I don't like that human!" And then, "sorry I nipped you, I love the human" drama pigs for sure

The little squeaks they make when they’re distressed break my heart. It’s a necessity though, they need the care that saskia and all the other wonderful volunteers provide.

Teddies can definitely come from two non-teddy parents! Of course they're not pedigreed show pigs, but my American foster pig gave birth to two Americans and a teddy on Thursday. Her mate was also American. From what I understand, the teddy gene is a recessive mutation, so it can be carried. If I knew the history of these pigs, I would bet there is a teddy somewhere in the background.
Joni Butts I was thinking the same thing. I know a pair that was American shorthair and Abyssinian, their babies were Abyssinian and Teddy. It's possible that he was something other than Teddy, but that's what he looked like. They were so freaking cute either way haha

thanks for your really good an interesting videos. I can take so much good information from it. Do female guinea pigs have these boar bags too? Please continue exactly like that. I have 8 guinea pigs.2 male and 6 female. 5 from them came from a rescue too.The other 3 are children of one of my females, and now 6 months old. It is a very relaxed group. I had a pure Teddy she was so awesome. I didnt know about the ear cleaning.....she was from a PetCo....Vet gave her fuids/medication/and oatmeal like food....unfortunetly even doing all that she passed at like 2yrs old!!

Have they been clipped too short and bled before? Could be past trauma.

My Roo was a Teddy and I didn't know about dry ears. My vet always checked on the ears of all my piggies.
You can wrap them up in a towel too. A burrito wrap. Haha, you're doing it.

Hi Saskia, love your videos! Had guinea pigs before but this time around watching your videos really made me learn how to properly take care of my boars. I have a question if you could help: should I also regularly check my non-teddy's ear for yuckyness or is that more of a teddy thing? Cheers keep up the good work! :D
I always have styptic powder on hand especially with my one girl who has black nails. Sometimes I’m afraid to take too much off so I usually just take a bit off the ends. My other two piggies have white nails so I cut off just in front of the quick, that way they’re shorter and they’re more comfortable but it doesn’t bleed.

Hi I have needed this videos all my life...so helpful.
Question: I rescued a former breeder boar and his pouch is full of that skunky white stuff and hay all the time! All my piggies get cages cleaned twice a day(Flannel) I clean him out every other day. Does that mean he is old? I use mineral oil and q tips to clean, would anything else help? Thanks and God bless you all!!

I have a teddy at home and she has dry skin, especially in the ears. I'm used to scratching and putting lotion on her ears but I've never thought of going that deep into them. She really does not appreciate me going too deep but I feel like she would benefit from this.
How often should this be done?
Was curious if by massaging or cleaning the ears, can you damage their hearing?
I developed an allergy to piggies when I last owned mine. Some breeds of dogs are better for folks w/ allergies... are teddies good for folks w/ piggie allergies? I'd love to own one again!
Maybe you can try Baldwins or Skinnies? These breeds have no hair.

Id like to hear her mention something about not digging into the ear too deeply with the cotton bud.
I bet it might hurt. Especially when you get one that has a lot of gunk and you’re taking the Q-tip and pushing all of it down further. I imagine that doesn’t feel too good.
I'm no expert, but she did say it's a pouch, so she's not pushing the boar down deeper. So using a q-tip is fine, ya just gotta be careful.
I have 3 teddies and 1 out of the 3 has absolutely terrible ears. The ears arnt dry dry but look n feel waxy. The others r normally fine ❤

no, youre not suppose to. thats the quick of the nail and in people terms, its like cutting past the white your nails into the actual nailbed. itll hurt and be uncomfortable
Does the olive oil not hurt them if it gets inside the piggie some how?
The calluses makes a "flap" sometimes.
And how do these animals clean their ears in the wild?
Is there a reason you did not take him to a little tub with running water and spray down his lower region? I am not talking about the ears, but his hind end. Instead of qtips and fingers, maybe a warm very gentile spray to clean down there. This pigs case, the qtips might have been good for removing big chucks of poop, but I would think a nice washing down there (especially if it stinks).
Also, can you, or anyone, recommend a good piggie shampoo? We do not wash our piggies to much, but we have pig that has really long hair and it gets dirty and smelly from the cage. And as much as we keep his cage clean he still gets dirty.
Could be the pouch is impacted and needs to be cleaned
How often should you do a boar check? I rescued my guy back in August/September and haven't looked down there.
You should do it about once every 2 months, so I recommend you go ahead and do a boar check as soon as you can.

I have 4 US teddy's and 1 CH Teddy. Not only dry ears but also a dry skin is a problem. None of them like it when you clean their ears🙊

With a Teddy I would check every 4 weeks or so.
I have a rabbit and was thinking I would like to get a Guinea Pig. Do you know if the two are usually compatible
In some pet stores they are kept together. But I'd check to see if they are sicknesses that can transfer to pig and bunny and vice versa. I'm not an expert, but that's my educated guess on on keeping 2 different animals together in the environment.
no, if the rabbit comes too close to the piggy they could get hurt from the buns legs. its best to either get a new cage or another rabbit comanpion because well

Ah bless you, he's OK. It's not painful, just uncomfortable as Guinea Pigs have very sensitive ears. Guinea pigs don't actually have very good eyesight so rely on their ears and whiskers to navigate. They can get a little fussy about their beautiful floppy ears! Xx
