I don't understand Abaluck's position in insisting that it wouldn't be reasonable to conclude that masks have a small effect in slowing the spread of covid. One doesn't have to dispute the data or the study to conclude that- that is, in fact, what the study itself concluded.
Great discussion. I can’t believe it has so few views! I would have liked you to ask Jason if he thinks the effect found by this solitary study is big enough to justify universal community mask mandates (even in low vax uptake contexts). He seemed to hedge when he said there needed to be a “calculation” before such interventions are made. He must surely be aware that very few (if any) governments have made such calculations. Looking forward to seeing if he (or, ideally, others) can replicate his result.
This was fantastic!!! It is incredible how two people can be looking at the same thing talking about the same thing and even agreeing on the data the numbers and the facts but still come to completely diametrically opposite conclusions. It’s like that Photoshop filter that inverts the colors, except it’s a cognitive filter.
