What’s the Born on the Fourth of July movie about?
Ron Kovic is (Tom Cruise from The Firm and Vanilla Sky) a good kid whose patriotism takes him to Vietnam in the late 1960s and brings him back home paralyzed from the chest down and burdened with the guilt of having accidentally killed a fellow soldier in combat. Living at home with his parents, Ron struggles fiercely with these challenges against the exacerbating background of his culture’s anti-war and anti-vet sentiments. Things get bad for him, he gets very angry and leaves home for Mexico to forget it all with booze, drugs, and prostitutes. That false paradise eventually fails him, however, and he returns to the States and makes some positive moves, including visiting the parents of the soldier he had killed. He winds up being a spokesman for vets, anti-war ones in particular, and at the end he is wheeling himself out onto the stage of the Democratic Convention of 1976 to huge applause, feeling, as he has just said to a reporter offstage, "I’m home."

What the film doesn't tell you but the book does is that the marine that rescued Ron Kovic on this day was killed later on repeating the same act of courage for a third time in the same day.
It is too bad they couldn't have found a way to incorporate it in to the movie
@truthandfreedom885 Yeah, true.. But I suppose that the film was shot consecutively and Kovic didn't find out until years later (according to his book)..
I suppose the cutthroat business of Hollywood picture, didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a set and a few lines of dialogue just to show Ron being told, or probably another quarter million dollars producing a battle scene so we can see the brave fall.
Maybe he was the black Marine getting hit with the defibrillator. He was wearing the same wife beater A-shirt and looked similar.
@nicholasmuro1742 Whoa!! Are you saying they all look the same?
Only joking dude, yeah maybe you are right, I remember thinking that initially when I first watched the film, but during the field hospital scene, that marine seemed to have a different shaped face, hair style and body shape, but during that scene he did have a lot going on, so I could definitely be wrong.
@@DaDaW9762 the bravery… the courage.. the valor of the soldiers that fought in the Vietnam war… it’s never been celebrated and honored the way they deserve for fairly obvious reasons. To all the Vietnam vets they are still with us I say: welcome home.
Tom Cruise should have won the oscar for this film.
It was imo Tom Cruise's best performance ,I think Daniel Day Lewis won it
The problem with "The Oscars", is they are annual. And it's one per year. It needs to be every 4 years, and do as many as should be praised. 1, maybe 10. That's a better system.
@@i.marr.6688Yes, D.D.Lewis won it👍...
Great performance, say what you will about Tom Cruise but he gives 110%
Say what, that he's part of a tax exempt cult?

@Jay I agree, I've seen all of his movies, and movies like this one he always did perfect
I agree. He's very eccentric; but I've never seen him do a bad movie.

I knew someone who was an army surgeon in Vietnam and he had this serenity about him. He never spoke about it. Perhaps he was in a place like this and any normal problem was nothing compared to this scenario. The same with the priest. The fact that he was so honest with Kovic and tells him he was doing the last rites... I definitely start tearing up. Great scene.
Fuck, I agree...
Those Doctors and Surgeons should be honored for the work they did the amount of young GI'S they helped and cared for they stopped many from dying. When I saw this scene on the big screen it was so realistic the priest who tells Ron you have to stay alive I thought Born on the fourth of July was really in your face the Vietnam scenes was so realistic and The scene with William Dafoe in Mexico William Dafoe had a Cameo but boy he nailed the role of the bitter vet , interesting that both him and Tom Beranger from Platoon were in this movie 🎥 God Bless all the men who fought and died in the Vietnam war 🙏 🙏
@@i.marr.6688 There's HALF truths in this masterpiece.
There's LOADS of scenes where there's CRUEL, UNCARING AND obscenity-spewing ANTI-SOLDIER doctors in the scenes in that movie that SYMBOLIZED a portion of how MANY VIETNAM stateside doctors treated veterans!
FUCK THE CRUEL DOCTORS AND NURSES. GOD BLESS THOSE WHO DIED IN THE FIELDS, AT VIETNAM HOSPITALS AND AT HOME, BACK THEN AND CLOSER TO NOW!
My dad was a surgeon in Vietnam, he only spoke about it once.
The scene when Ron is getting the last rites was one of the most realistic scenes if ever saw Stone really deserved the best Director film was one of the most realistic scenes i ever seen it was a very powerful and realistic
This movie really traumatized me as a kid ,a definite masterpiece
I agree, the hospital scenes were scarier than the war scenes.
In fact, Ron was shot in the foot and later get another shot in the shoulder.
Another guy tried to help him, but was shot in the heart and died instantly.
Then a black marine helped him to get at a safe place, but this marine died two days later in combat.
random fact the man who rescued Ron was actually a Hispanic man named Molina.
My dad was in Vietnam. He said it was awful. He had nightmares
Thank you for censoring the word "fuck", wouldn't want to have my parade of blood and gore ruined by someone rearranging the alphabet to form a naughty word.
UA-cam politics
@Heidi Engel What?! Your comment is irrelevant. The word "fuck" is said in the film in this scene, but its censored. But the violence is not, due to obscure and asinine politics of UA-cam; which was the whole point of both of our comments. Comprehend what you're commenting on first.
Makes me want to give this video a thumbs down, but I can't cause this movie is really good
@@ironberserk2175 fuck & other words freely used in UA-cam: thank God’ in countless movies both US & foreign + documentaries etc etc and also in other versions of this fine kickass film from 1989
@@ironberserk2175 It's not UA-cam, it's America's Puritan sensibilities at work.
Very realistic and great The M.A.S.H. scene it was like the real thing ,very powerful and the way Stone films it he kind of shows you the confusion in a firefight very powerful scene
His best movie...heartwrenching
A typical Hollywood inaccuracy the lead actor in a battle scene is not wearing his helmet.
I saw this movie. I recently read Ron Kovic’s book. I then happened to see the movie again. The Vietnam Era Veterans were between the proverbial rock and a hard place. That generation was taught to have all this fear of ‘the Communists” and the U.S. opted to prop up a corrupt government to fight them because it was irrationally afraid that if S. Vietnam were unified with the North that “somehow” all of SE Asia would become Communist? The Vietnamese were fighting for their country and many young Anericans were fighting because if they didn’t they would go to prison and not be able to get a decent job? I have so much respect for both the Vietnam draftees and the Vietnamese that fought to get the Americans to go home. It must have web terrible for everyone but the American defense contractors. May God bless you Mr. Kovic.
Vietnam Is a 3rd World poor country.
BLAH BLAH BLAH.... it was all about money and innocent 18 year old boys lost their lives
True.
75 percent of combat troops in Vietnam were volunteers. We were sold a false bill of goods.
@@stephenfermoyle4578that’s basically what he just said but award yourself 10 virtue points anyway.

I agree, zero accuracy in that scenario
Being read your last rights has got to be the most surreal thing you could ever experience. your still here and alive for now, and youve got a man of the cloth giving you permission to die. I'm an atheist and dont follow any faith, but I think hearing those words would probably break me.
I have seen it with my very eyes working at a hospital. Catholics are the patients that die most peacefully. Thanks to the Last Rites. They close their eyes, they smile, they feel no pain anymore, they are ready to go.
Totally agree, on my opinion this scene here is one of the most emotional that i ever saw , everytime i watch it , tears came to my eyes .
Just immagine to be a young guy almost a teen , you’re saying to yourself: “ok , everything is going to be ok, i’m at ROLE 2 and medics will help me, i gonna came out of this soon, i’m too young to die…“ and finally the priest take your hand… “are you ready, son?” Uuuuuufffff one of the hardest scenes!!
In the Catholic faith, it's encouraged to have a Priest come when you suffer a major illness or injury, even if you have an okay shot at surviving. It gives us a chance to confess our sins, or receive the anointing of the sick, so that if on the chance we do die, we do not die in a state of mortal sin. Since war affords many opportunities to commit potentially mortal sins, it's important to have chaplains embedded with both medical and combat units.
People who go into cardiac arrest due to traumatic injuries are not defibrillated. But I understand how it makes for good cinema.
Read you your last rights, that is something he will never forget. So sad these scenes keep playing out in ukraine, gaza and parts of africa. Men being killed and maimed for politician's. The hell with that
Vietnam & Afghanistan war is American disgrace,, so much potential soul wasted by that senseless war!
Completely incomparable situations
Vietnam yes, Afghanistan I can at least understand those mfers had to pay for 9/11. But it became sort of like a Vietnam in that it was unwinnable. The difference is nowhere near the casualties as Vietnam
@@TimezOfInfamy So you're saying we or the US should've done nothing after 9/11?
@@scottwilson1251 it's not an easy question but in hindsight the 20 years of war really hurt this just as much as 9/11 did
@@scottwilson1251 Afghanistan was never about 9/11, Bush let Bin Laden escape, it was about controlling the region for other purposes.
Now you know what darkness is
They show the M14 being rapid fire with zero recoil . That's one of the main reasons I got rid of it it was such a beast to fire especially on full auto.
Pleased you pointed that out, I noticed that to. Just wondering how this could be made to look right when filming ? At the very least, the actor could pull the rifle back hard into the shoulder, like when you're playing at shooting when a your a kid.
@@user-xs1yx9tc9m most of these movies are made for people that have never even fired a weapon. Hollywood hates people like me cuz I'll stand up in the movie theater and say that's not true 😁
The Man in The Black Pajamas, A Worthy Fuckin Adversary…
God bless our troops!
This is a true story. The Black man who rescued the "kid" was saying curse words, the men helping the wounded gave up on the person who was extremely injured, and spoke of the football team named the "Packers."
That Black soldier flashed in like a true superhero to save. Also great scene when Ron was turned from his wheelchair in riot mess, then again the Black paramedic veteran run in and saved him.
Dam- - the last rite you know it deep
I always wondered when watching this years ago if the black marine saying where the devil at at the start of the battle scene is the same black marine going code blue in the field hospital
Was wondering the same. I'm pretty certain it was the same guy.
So somehow a few naughty words is worse than graphic bloody violence? Grow the hell up and re-release this clip UNCENSORED!
The account holder is probably the one that censored it, not youtube. There's no restriction against the F word on UA-cam.
You cane see the hole in his back.
What a scene.
I guess at some point the doctors must have witnessed so much death and brutality, that they can't help buy try to clock it all by talking about things like sports, even when facing it head on.
This was on his 2nd tour.
He liked it
How did he even get into the USMC after shooting up all those NGs at school...?
Even joined the NAVY in the 80s and ended up being some high paid movie actor manager...🤔
I grew up a lot like Ron Kovic. Extremely patriotic, religious, all American boy, who had been brainwashed into thinking that if you've gotta go out somehow, then this is better than dying a boring, unexciting life. Boy, was I misled!
I actually missed two separate combat deployments against the odds. However, watching this now, as an older, (hopefully) wiser man and husband and family man, all I can think of is what a waste of life and talent! What a terrifying last place to die, in a field hospital, surrounded by your friends who are, in fact dying! Just that part alone is terrifying. Then to be a quadriplegic for the rest of your life after all of that?!?! Ugh!
3:09 It looks like a serious injury to his genitals.
Stephen Baldwin's character? Yes, it appears that has suffered a catastrophic injury to his genitals. From what I've read the VC booby traps caused terrible lower body injuries.

How did he get paralyzed if he was shot in the shoulder? Just asking
How the fck did tom cruise not get an oscar for this. He carried the whole film through every single scene. I love how people paint this broad stroke as "the guy who does 20 mission impossible movies." And btw, exactly how easy is it to do those? Rain man, mangolia, few good men, color of money, taps, collateral, tropic thunder, jerry macguire. They gave leo an overdue token award for revenant when he actually deserved it for at least 4 other prior films. They gave it to denzel for training day when he was criminally overdue for multiple efforts before that. they need to honor cruise in some manner.
Ron getting shot and spitting blood is one of the most powerful scene of this movie. Last rites🤭
That exit wound on his back really freaked me out when I was younger….. out of all the anti-war movies I’ve seen this is the only one that made me think twice about wanting to join the military if I ever decided to…… the only film….

Because the sounds when in a firefight are absolutely deafening. Nothing but constant explosions, screams and total chaos!

Great scene! This is why I love being a Catholic. Last Rites is a great sacrament which allows you to be forgiven of your sins right before dying if you accept Jesus Christ.
Its more of a ritual to calm a person down as they are dying. Religions have been doing similar things for hundreds of thousands of years. Hell even hunter gathers did it to the animals they slain for food. Last Rites is one of the few primal rituals that humans do to this day. Its fascinating.
