They just going indie tho, but they still have good stuff, please check them out. I think japan actually loved classic r&b, a lot of their soloist still have that kind of sounds

They grew up listening to Lauryn Hill, TLC, Destiny's Child, Faith Evans, Keyshia Cole, Kehlani, Mary J Blige, Missy Elliott, Ciara, Beyonce, etc. That's not including their Pop influences which are from what I have seen.... Michael Jackson, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Billie Eilish, Justin Beiber, Carly Rae Jepsen, etc. Cocona danced to Pop Smoke in her MOVE #2 video and Jurin danced to Chris Brown in hers, so I bet those are influences of theirs too.
The first thing I noticed is it never felt like they were stepping on the songs they were covering, despite the reworked beats and added vocal flair. What I noticed after was that Hinata's cover of Bad was mostly untouched (unsurprising, Kriz did the vocal production for shooting star! What a cool way to circle back) and was the longest. Juria only ventured a little away from Utada (which on its own is impressive to pull off. Utada is an icon) and then Chisa really put herself into MJ's Rock With You and I don't think its an accident her cover is the shortest of the three. It feels like such a subtle layer of respect I just don't expect from non-american/western artists. Then they hit No Scrubs. They've been name dropping TLC as inspirations since the jump, can be caught singing along to Diggin on You and Unpretty, and have thrown themselves into that mid-late 90s culture wholeheartedly in a way only they can. Are they releasing a treatise on global racial relations and cultural osmosis? No, but they earnestly absorb themselves in the Black music that not only built the industry they stood on to even produce this content but our own American musical industry. I'm guilty of side-eyeing certain folks who claim Lauryn Hill as an inspiration, and I was a skeptic for XG until I saw half her damn discography stacked neatly on an endtable in a blurry BTS shot for one of the girl's birthdays. I stopped being a skeptic when I heard one of them humming Nothing Even Matters. They love the music, and ASPIRE to it. I think thats a line worth respecting, and they hit No Scrubs with an originality AND accuracy that speaks to who they love and who they want to be. I can see TBoz, Lefteye (rip), and Chilli in these three. I haven't kept up with the former and latter these years, but I wonder how they'd feel about these girls, even if this definitely isn't their usual scene haha. Great video! Without looking, I hope you got a chance to hear them do the OPPOSITE kind of cover of Peaches by Justin Bieber. They put their foot on it and made it a better song in a way that I find hard to describe, despite my obvious willingness to the verbose.
