How to make a Bitcoin Paper Wallet

- In this video I show you how to use Bitaddress.org to create a Bitcoin paper wallet to store your funds safely offline.
NOTE - To have the highest level of security possible, this would be done on a computer that has never and will never connect to the internet. This minimizes the odds that any sort of malware could be installed on your system and gain access to your private keys. As always, please exercise caution and use this or any other security method at your own risk!

Do you know if there's a way to receive funds from a paper wallet without totally sweeping it? Or do you have to take the full amount using this cold storage technique? Thanks a lot.
Technically you can access a paper wallet and send a specific amount from it. The Mycelium wallet gives you this option when you sweep this way. However I would highly recommend about this. A paper wallet is secure because the private key that allows you to spend the funds has never been online (assuming you've created it correctly). As soon as you scan your private key to spend from a paper wallet, it is only as secure as the device you've scanned it with. That means if your phone is compromised, someone could essentially clear out any BTC you leave on that paper wallet.
Since creating paper wallets is free, I would recommend clearing the paper wallet to something like copay or mycelium, then sending the funds you'd like to keep in savings to a brand new paper wallet.
Ah ok that makes a lot of sense. But they would presumably have to compromise the phone, and also have access to the paper wallet itself? Or does the fact that the private key has been entered and the 'Spend' QR scanned on the phone mean that just the phone would be enough to clear out the wallet?

You're right on second count - once they have access to the phone, the fact that you've scanned the wallet once means they would then have seen and been able to clear the rest of the funds.

Also make sure any printer you print your paper wallet on has never been connected to the Internet and is offline. Otherwise, a virus running on the printer will be looking for your private keys.
Yes, 100% right. Any internet connected device could be vulnerable.
i have no printer. so i need a printer if i want a paper wallet and keep it away from the internet? ... what about "copy shop" ? ... obvious outrageous ?
You use a pen and paper to write down the private key.
Or use typewriter lol

My question, if you took the page offline how can it be sure 100% that the address you make is unique, or is it just that the probability of making an existing adress is so small that's it's almost impossible to make a duplicate?

I work and live in Calgary Canada, but I like doing extended trips every couple of years when I can. I also sometimes work in Vancouver and other major cities, as well as make trips down to the US in the summer to sight-see. I'm going to be a lot more mobile starting in the fall - only need to be in town 1 week per month!

So, in the end, you depend on the app and the developers of copay to not steal your data and password from the old wallet. Meaning that in order to be very protected (or at least a bit more) you would have to send from a new wallet every single time...

If you choose the "Password" option to encrypt your private key, is it safe to let others see it (the encrypted version) as it is printed on the paper?
Or is the encryption weak enough (only a password) that they could easily derive you real private key from the encrypted one?

Ben; can you withdraw funds from a Paper Wallet without sweeping the entire amount?
Correct me if I'm wrong. So you have to send money to that wallet you created first from let's say coinbase am I right?
But if the QR code gets smuched or unscannable, you still can use the secret phrase key code right????

Paper wallets are essentially for one time use. You can load it up with coin but when you take the coin off you should take it all off and later make a new wallet with new keys later to keep it safe.

At the present date, what would be the fees of the 2 transactions you made to and from this paper wallet?
Can you do this with mycelium wallet also? It has a cold storage tab with a camera code scanner but I can't tell if it is used for the same purpose as what you did using the copay app.
why generate a new wallet address, where you move the mouse around, and get the non-decorated paper wallet...if you then go on the choose the paper wallet with the art-work...they have different address/keys at this point. Are they still connected? I'm trying to figure this out, thanks
can this be printed off anytime even if you don't have bitcoins yet?..............and can you keep this one paper wallet and just keep loading on the same one everytime you buy some?.........or do you have to make new paper wallet everytime you buy bitcoin?..... just keep loading would be cool,if you can?
Great simple video! One question, I currently have bitcoin on LocalBitcoin and my Jaxx wallet on my phone. How do I transport these to the paper wallet? Do I create the paper wallet and just send them From my JAXX and LocalBTC to the address from the newly created paper wallet?

Thank you for the video! easy to understand. I tried putting in a paper wallet 0.0005 and then tried to sweep it with copay. It says "insufficient funds" is there a fee with sweeping wallets? Was mine to small to be sweeped?
Does this also work for etherium and other crypto currency or only bitcoin?
