  • A major problem that most developments face is maintaining a high frame-rate while getting the most out of visual quality. In this presentation from Unreal Fest Europe 2019, Epic's Mario Plamero and Andreas Suika explain how Unreal Engine 4 is focused on that purpose with several tools that are built into the engine to help developers achieve their objectives.
This talk provides an in-depth look at: Landscapes, Foliage, World Composition, Occlusion, Mesh Reduction, LODs, HLODs, Mesh Instancing and more tools to come that will help teams maximize the capabilities of any platform.

for anyone wondering about a workaround to foliage collision not being removed after destruction (for harvesting resources for example) i was able to spawn empty actors with a tall capsule collider at the world location of every foliage instance at runtime and disable the built in foliage collision, using my blueprints collision instead. then, i have direct and full blueprint control over that foliage mesh, i can remove it and it's collision or i can spawn a replacement.

Whenever I use world composition, the game hitches badly when unloading landscape tiles, basically making it unusable

Then your CPU (Power) and RAM (Speed and Size) are bottlenecking you. In particular, if your RAM is small enough than unloading/loading tiles pings the pagefile, then you're in deep trouble

@@maloxi1472 I haven't tested this in a while. at the time I had an i7 8700k, 32gb ddr4 3200, and a gtx 1080ti. definitely not going into the page file. I might check it out now, but UE5 is switching to world partition instead, and this might resolve and weird memory hitches. I have seen a lot of people reporting the same problem.

I don’t know if this was the reason for you, but it could be related to construction scripts or the begin play event on blueprints objects placed on streaming levels. If there are a lot of heavy code on startup, that may impact the loading process causing some hiccups. By the way it should not affect unloading… Here I got problems with loading only, solved after I changed my programming. Like randomly delaying the startup code on each actor that needs it, so they would not run all at once.

This all sounds good - until you listen to what detail (actual information) is presented. That's what happens when EpicGames keeps posting videos from events that are time constrained - and hence are rushed.

I don't get the point about open world since 99% of them are boring walk simulators or they have the same 6 trees and 6 rocks clone all over the place! The current generation of juveniles wannabe devs don't have access to a 100 and + team to populate any large area so open world is just a big joke! I will prefer linear game with decent size map that have content and nice design over any of these ridiculous so call open world since walking will eventually lead to a mountain or sea barrier. Just start by being able to populate a 64 km square and then come back to me if you still want to populate a bigger world!

there is the other way around buddy... there is no point anymore in non open world games. The only reason they took place and dominated for so long was that the tech was not there to create legit open world games. Now that we have the tech the non open world games become useless pieces of crap that serve no purpose. You live in a open world reality and you have free will/free choices. What you just said confirmed how little understanding you have and that your IQ is very low.

@@misticmac9008 Did i insult you in my comment if not then you are showing who is the low IQ! Anyway all of this is now irrelevant since the world population is about to get decimated by the vaccine but i am sure you don't have a single clue about what I'm talking here...

I feel like the UI for unreal engine development is needlessly complicated.
