How to Change Your SRAM Chain

  • Replace your SRAM chain. It's a good way to extend the life of your drive train. It's also good to know how to do it and be familiar with it if and/or when your chain snaps in the middle of a ride! A very common "middle-of-a-ride" mechanical problem. Let's walk through the basic steps involved.

    Also love that special bike clamp holder you have for the frame! What the heck is it? Do you use it because the frame is carbon or do uou just prefer it over clamping the seat post?

    • @ridethechaos304
      @ridethechaos304  11 місяців тому +1

      Another great Question! In that video I put a shop towel in my Park Stand and loosely clamped the frame. It is carbon and this can damage your frame if over tightened. The Best way is by clamping the seatpost, just make sure your seat collar or quick release is secure. Good opportunity to check it. I always use a torque wrench on tightening my seat collar. Over tightening it can of course damage the frame but also make the dropper not function correctly. Thanks again! RTC, D

    Does the direction of chain installation itself matter? Like how the master link has directional arrows and should be properly oriented, do SRAM chains have a direction?

    • @ridethechaos304
      @ridethechaos304  11 місяців тому +1

      Excellent Question! SRAM chains are not directional. Just the Link itself. After use the chain rollers will stretch to one side. Some mechanics suggest actually rotating the chain, although I would say replace it and save the drive train. Thanks for watching, hope this helps! Ride The Chaos, D'Miles

      Good morning! Sram chains are not directional just the link. I have XX1 on one bike and wondered the same thing. Some mechanics suggest actually rotating the chain because the rollers stretch to one side. At that point I just replace the chain. Have a great day and Ride The Chaos, D'Miles

    Great video, helped me change my chain easily. Just one question, when fitting the master link you said the arrow should point in the direction of chain rotation, is this for the front or back master link?

    • @ridethechaos304
      @ridethechaos304  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Brian, thanks for the feedback and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. The arrow should be facing you (outwards) as you install it. The arrow will be going in the direction of travel so when under the chainstay it will be facing the rear tire then when on top it will be facing the front tire. I am dislexic myself so with tire rotation and chain rotation I often visualize the process prior to installation.

    how often do you change your chain?

    • @ridethechaos304
      @ridethechaos304  3 роки тому

      This is an Excellent question Richard! Basically there are two schools of thought. Ride the whole drive train into the ground or catch the wear on the chain so you can make the drive train last longer.
      The art of replacing your chain in time to avoid this accelerated wear of your cassette and chainring (s) is beneficial in my book. No two chains will wear at exactly the same rate because no two riders treat their chains the same. Different conditions, different products different amounts of stress on the chain.
      The trick is to replace your chain before it has to much "stretch." A new chain will slip if the stretch on the old chain has gone too far and the new chain will not be compatible with the rest of the existing drive train. At some point I do end up replacing the chainrings, cassette and derailleur pulleys no matter what in a complete drive train overhaul.
      Although I feel I get more out of my drivetrain by replacing the chain based on time such as seasonal maintenance (for me 2x a year) or by hours/mileage. Some say every 2,000 miles, 800 miles, etc. I can also calculate from an app like Strava how many miles or hours I have on a component by cross-referencing to the date I replaced it or purchased the bike. In addition I look at it like this... change it while you can because chains are often not as durable as the rest of the drive chain. If the chain fails, hopefully the drive train will accept a new chain.
      Measuring chain stretch is another great method. Park makes excellent tools for this and has a Phenomenal video on this practice as well. Here's the like to that video.

    So. Just to be clear for us doofs (ok I’m the only one). Rear on smallest, front on largest even if you have 2 up front? Wiggle master link back and forth to remove chain not a random link?

    • @ridethechaos304
      @ridethechaos304  3 роки тому

      Hey there, Don't be hard on yourself... I've worked on bikes for years and I like to break things down for people. Anything mechanical can be easily confusing. I am also dyslexic, so the way people explain things sometimes mixes me up as well. Don't be afraid to ask more questions if this doesn't clarify the instructions. You got this!
      You want to have the chain in the Smallest cog on the rear cassette no matter what. If you have two chain rings up front, then go with the smaller up front. That avoids the "cross shifting" angle or twisting of the chain in the process. The chain should be basically straight in line from the small cog to what you have up front.
      For Sram, You definitely want to loosen the master link. I highly recommend a set of master link pliers for this job. Park tools makes an excellent reasonably priced one.
      I hope this helps, Thanks for your question. Ride The Chaos 🤙

      Thanks for the simple (simpleton?) explanation. I got an engineering degree in college so I tend to way over think things and want to know every tiny detail. That’s fine if your designing something but not efficient when your putting a chain on a bike for instance. As always the learning experience of hands on makes all the difference. I still had a helluva time getting the old chain master link to give way. Any tricks I need to know for that? Thanks again.

    You should rename this video "How to Change Your SRAM Chain... except for the sizing the chain part". That's a pretty key piece of information in this procedure. Just sayin'.

    • @ridethechaos304
      @ridethechaos304  2 роки тому

      Thanks Floyd! This video is meant to match and replace an existing chain that is already the correct length especially on a 1X system. Yes this video is assuming there is not too much slack or the derailure is not getting sucked up. Calculating chain length from scratch is a video in itself. For Most people replacing an existing chain I feel including Calculating correct chain length would overcomplicate the process. As with Park Tools video on chain replacement, I simply measure the new chain next to the old chain rivet to rivet and count links as I briefly explain. If you have considerable stretch, I replace the complete drivetrain. Although as this video promotes, replacing the chain before it gets to that point increases the longevity of your drivetrain. If you are in the process of new build, converting the drivetrain or your bike does not have the optimal chain length then yes sizing is important.
