- Tamil Nadu has witnessed a surge in atrocities against Dalits, and in recent years, these attacks have multiplied, raising questions about the commitment of Dravidian parties to protecting marginalized communities. Incidents such as human feces being mixed into a drinking water tank in Vengavayal, Pudukottai district, and assaults on students from Scheduled Caste communities in Nanguneri, Tirunelveli district, have sent shockwaves across the state. Dalit rights activists and intellectuals have criticized the DMK government for its lukewarm response to handling cases related to atrocities against Dalits. Vocal activists have faced online attacks and trolling. In this episode of Pakka Politics, Shabbir Ahmed engages in a conversation with Shalin Maria Lawrence, a writer and political commentator, discussing her politics, activism, her connection to Vada Chennai, social justice, gender justice in politics and where Dalits fit into Dravidian politics.

@@GayuBala-yi9pp Dr.Ambedkar is a great intellectual among the many we had in this land including Swamy Vivekanantha. You are free to choose what you want in a democratic country and that is what meant by democracy which we all enjoy and thanks to many of our leaders who brought this freedom to our land. Here the questionis not about Dr.Ambedkar's intellectual ability and his content of books. Why dont we as humans use our own brain to think and assimilate what we are today?. If some says "think like a German" or "think like a Japanese" around the world we all have a meaningful positive thought and where as someone says "think like an Indian" it does not sound good anywhere and No Ambedkar's books helps us there. The only thing that will create our identity is our culture,conscience and competence. My question is more towards the first thing "culture". Using an Android phone and typing in English for convenience doesnt stop me speaking in tamil without mixing english words with my fellow tamilian and neither it can stop me respecting my other languages spoken in Bharat. What is culture?. It is the language, religion, behaviour, activities, practices..etc. I am sure Ambedkar is not against culture and if he has pin pointed any of the bad practices within a religion that can always be rectified and evlove further like any other religion like Christianity which evloved with many Biblical Testaments subjective to the needs of its people. Your very DNA belongs to Hinduism and see how that can be improved for better and see the positive aspects of that religion. You dont have to listen to Sai Deepak but there are millions including the people from other countries understanding Hinduism in the right way and want to follow it u. It is pathetic to see our own people with the right DNA couldnt. Around the world wherever u go, you will feel the best place and the culture to live with is Bharat.

@@GayuBala-yi9pp I am glad for your position that we all come as shaiviite from Tamil Nadu and Kerala thousands of years back. It is a matter of a question how vainavam came and from where it came from, how Sanskrit was used in this land and what it has to do with our older Tamil, what brahma, Vishnu to do with lord Shiva, etc etc. religion is a belief system that should guide society for it's sustainable continuity. We should learn it from the right guru who has the expertise rather than concluding that there is no one in existence and call the religion itself as waste. For that matter every religion has its areas like child marriage, women impoverishment that is continually discussed..
@@GayuBala-yi9pp I did not belittle Ambedkar rather I quoted what he said and mentioned the contribution of many people to the constitution. I respect the constitution and always look for it's further improvement that will benefit and improve this nation. Any discussion today of splitting the nation as north and south will only breakdown our growth and harmony. Enough of religious based hatred ness. Respect everyones religion and faith. If we don't want to follow it stay away and keep quiet rather than throwing mud on those people who have faith and want a progressive country through faith and harmony.
@@GayuBala-yi9pp I totally accept your view on how Tamil as our mother tongue can be the prime language to worship and take up our spiritual practices. At the same time do you accept the state of our shaiviite temples in Tamil Nadu and the know how of our spiritual practices went and reached the right way to all of us?. I feel it is not. It is not even to a fraction on comparing to other religions which want to spread here in the last few hundred years here..

@@gomathigayathri3852 . She talks on history but did she analyze when did untouchability started?. Who brought this up into the state?. Britishers are the pure reasons for untouchability concept in India,particularly in South India as they had their head quarters in Madras.

just one question- why did they not pass a law eradicating untouchability? equal rights for everyone irrespective of caste and they cud have tried to ban the caste system all together.they did not even attempt to - that was possible only AFTER political independence!! The British were not interested in Dalits at all - their only motive was conversion to Xtianity and then? where they equal to the British? No way ! That is the whole point here!!
