That beer used to be my favourite for years - that is, until SAB (South African Brewery Group) took it over, and the quality went to the dogs - while it's price hit the roof. I mean, it always has been tad on pricey side, being considered "premium brand", but nowadays it's "premium" only in the "price department".

Yes , the foam protects beer from oxidation , you can also ask for beer without foam (Čochtan) , a 300ml beer in full sized glass with foam up to top (Šnyt) or full glass of beer foam (Milk) , pilsner urquell from tab has the smoothest , best tasting foam of all beers , only crazy guys drink Čochtan

1898-The General Customs Office in London had already designated Pilsner Beer as a special type of beer, regardless of its origin. So, the Plzeňský Prazdroj - Pilsner Urquell trademark was registered in 1898 to protect the unique brand which serves as the model for all Pilsner-type beers.
Pilsner Urquell takes pride in its consistent flavour, a fact that has also been confirmed by expert analyses. Measurements conducted by a Swiss laboratory in St. Gallen in 1897 record the qualitative parameters of Pilsner Urquell beer. The same results were also confirmed by its successor Labor Veritas in 2008. To this day Pilsner Urquell retains the same flavour that has made it so famous around the world

The glass should have a handle so that You won´t warm the beer with your hand as you drink it. The glass has extra space for the foam, so you are not getting ripped off.
The wet (and thoroughly cleaned and chilled!) glass is actually to lower the foaming because it should be poured very fast from the tap (in 4 seconds for example). And it needs a skilled beerista to get a top-notch beer. The foam cap is mainly for preserving the beer from getting in touch with oxygen, which ruins the flavor.
If You visit Czech Republic sometimes, be sure to hit Pilsen. The origin city of this gem. Czech beer, in general, is very good, but Pilsner Urquell in Pilsen is on a whole anotherlevel. We go there once a year for a beer tour, when we go to 10+ pubs and have a single beer in every one of them. Even for a Czech dude it´s a real treat. Highly recommend.

Here in Czechia you get a glass with line marker, so you can check yourself if you are being screwed. Most of the time you receive it over the marker. The way we drink it is very cold and the foam needs to receide a bit from three fingers to about one. The magic of this beer is special brewing method, wooden barrels, special local water, czech hops a quality of ingrediences. They dont speed up the process of brewing as in other mass produced beers. They tried to brew it in Poland and Russia few years back, but it was a flop. The main reason was, that they didnt use local water from Pilsen. It is not your usuall tap water. It is a mass production yet crafted beer.

When I was in Germany with the army in 2018 a bunch of us guys from our platoon decided to take a 4 day pass to Prague. The Czech version of Pilsner Urquell is Plzeňský Prazdroj. I believe that the brewery uses the German version simply because it's easier to read and pronounce for non-Czechs. Both Czech and German were official languages in Czechia in 1842, and they have been using both names from the very beginning.

My dad was born near Plzen and naturally it followed us wherever we were. Growing up with this has been a privilege. I find the bottled version slightly lacking from the tap version which takes a notoriously long time to serve as you need to do two pours. The three finger head is best achieved by tap in the correct Pilsner Urquell glass. And it is simply the best beer I’ve ever had to this day. There’s nothing better than one of these on a hot day. Wishing I could get my hands on the keg, but here in Australia we only get the bottles. Nice to see you give it a great review too!

Two things, first, the three fingers of foam are accounted for in the glass design, e.g. the typical Pilsen's half-liter glass has volume of 0.5L, then a little line all around the glass (marking the 0.5L) plus around 3 fingers space above, meaning you would not get any less beer. Second, that little šušen joke at 6:05 caught me off-guard. Is the interview infamous abroad or have you just stumbled upon this culturally defining moment of Czech TV on your own? Great vid, glad you like the beer! Make sure to try it fresh from the tap one day, nothing beats that!

From denmark. Lived in prague on an internship for my studies in toruism back in the autum of 2021. I went to pilsen a had a glas of urquell straight from the barel.. it was amazing. I was happy and sad at the same time. Never had beer so good and so fresh, and i never will again. Its not as good in a botle or can as from tapp in chezchia. So pleace go to prague and get a glass. And maby ask for a snyt. Its a way they poor it, thats called snyt. There is free variants, normal snyt and milko witch means milk. Its do to the amount of foam in the beer. I thougt they were opsessed with foam, but it does make a huge difference to the taste of the same beer. Im from denmark. We have some good micro breweries. My favorite is thisted bryghus, and fur bryghus. Out of the mass prodused beers id go with a carlsberg or tuborg clasic. But none of them in my opinion comes cloes to pilsner urquell. ❤

@@malfunctionjunction6212 I first tasted it in Malta whilst visiting family. 60 p a bottle I think!
It's great in summer and winter.
Where'd you first taste it, m8?

I'm not sure slugging it down in one go is the best way to enjoy this fantastic beer. Carlsberg is pretty good too if you buy it in Europe

At 4.4 %, it might as well be an American beer too sessionable for my taste but would definitely take it over a cheap beer like bush

I thought the same, but if you chug them quickly, it makes up for the 4.4 - CHEERS!

SInce Czechs jugs beers like it's their last day on earth, our beers are usually around that 4.5 range so people can actually chug those beers and not get too effed up too quickly. We do have some darker beers with more alcohol in them though it's just not a Pilsner type beer anymore.

It's a very good beer, but better ones you'll get if you try the local beers there in Czech. For instance Gambrinus beer is my favorite.

Sorry for the late comment, this just popped up in my feed. You need a bonified pilsner beer glass to get the proper head. Just sayin' Good review though.

Glasses in Europe are designed to hold the correct t amount of beer being sold, and to have room for the correct sized head. By law glasses have a white line with the 25, 33, or 50cl measure indicated so you always know if you are getting the proper quantity. Often you will be served the glass right after the pour while the foam is still settling, the liquid will come up to the line quickly enough while the head settles in.

German beer glasses (in bars) have a pour line for beer proper, with another couple inches above that for head. This is a legal mandate, so drinkers don't get cheated with foam.

You cannot reach 3 fingers head if you have 'small' bottle, you have to buy regular 0,5liter/17 oz. Or better have directly from tap.
