I really loved this tutorial - it was a lifesaver! It helped me tackle a challenging problem at work that I’d been struggling with for quite some time. Your style of presenting the material is exceptional; it’s clear, engaging, and incredibly easy to follow. A big thank you for making such helpful content!
only partway through the videos but need to say a BIG THANKS to you Johnny. Clear and concise. You get the pain we feel and do not torture us with needless comment. Thank you again
There is a separate place in hell for those who developed PowerBi report builder. It was really good explanation. After hours of searching in Internet, finally i found someone who explained why it doesn't work. Great job.
Johnny, great video! Power BI Report Builder can certainly stand even more enhancements. Glad we can finally paste the DAX code in the initial dataset window. Nice job pointing out not only the gotchas, but workable solutions!
Thanks Charlie. I hope that MSFT do continue to add improvements. I don't think it will be as regular as the PBI desktop updates, but with more and more people now using Report Builder hopefully the development team will be more inclined to add those improvements
@@GreyskullAnalytics You probably saved me a couple of days trying to figure this out! I'm working on a multi-sectional report having to use multiple "fact" queries in the report I'm working on. Your video helped me figure out how to pass a date parameter and other parameters to all those queries. My first report....so this was VERY helpful!
Wow, great video explaining the funky date parameters and the automated dax queries report builder generates. You have gained a new subscriber! Cheers!
OK, I'm additionally impressed that you wrote and recorded your own music to this video. The content of the lesson is going to help me so much at work. I was struggling with date parameters yesterday and you addressed each of the odd problems I experienced with them.
Thanks for showing this, I never knew how this worked and got around by passing separate parameters for year and month, so users will select from 4 parameters in a range scenario. I like that know I can use a date picker.
Thanks for the video. It really helped me. I am new to paginated report it took me few hours to break this after watching your video solved the issue in few minutes. Once again thank you for the video :)
My data is only being filtered by the From date picker, is not being inclusive even though the inclusive operator was selected, how can i fix this? thanks.
Hello I loved your video--I am currently using your suggestions when creating Date Parameters in Paginated Reports. However, I have a situation where I have over 500 members and they have a population. I have a column for Population Rank--What I want to do is to do a similar type parameter where I choose those members who are pop rank of 5 above and 5 below the selected member population rank. So say, for example, that I have a member who is population rank of 10--I want to show all members who are population rank of 5-15 dynamically. This will eventually be a report that will be ran in a data flow and each report be put into a pdf file, so I need to have it where there is no interaction with the slicers. I have everything running so far, I am just not able to get the 5 above and 5 below working. Can you please point me in the right direction? Thank you
Excellent presentation! I'm not able to run the report, I have the following error if I can help: The Value expression for the text box 'Favorecido' refers to the field 'Favorecido'. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current dataset scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified dataset scope. Letters in the names of fields must use the correct case. ----------------------------
Hello @Greyskull, Need your help for implementing the cascading parameters in DAX.. so for e.g. Based on the selection of Start_Date and End_Date my other parameter should get filtered out and give me the values for those date range in the Slicer/parameter.. Hope you can make any videos on the same..
Hoi Johnny, thanks for this great video!! I am struggling also with filtering dates in my paginated report. The report may only show all results until last month. How can i fix this please?
I do! I may have to make a video. For any parameter you create, in the parameter properties pane there is an option to set a default. You can use an expression for that too, so far example you could always set the end date to today and the from date to today-30 for example
@Johnny W Thanks, Johnny! I was having trouble with the expression... Specifically, returning a single date to use as default value. I ended up creating a 2 column table with just 2 dates (start/end). Luckily, it worked! Thanks again for the extremely helpful video and your response to my question!
Hi mate, I've followed your DAX method and have a simple query returning 3 cols that works. When I try and add the date parameter I receive an error stating I need to use a VALUE or FORMAT funciton to convert the values as time can't be compared with Text. I've formatted the parameters but can't see where else I can do this? Have you any clue? I've set the parameter format in the query as you've suggested, I've also tried using formatdatetime and still receive the same error.
Hello friends, excellent explanation, thank you, I need your help, when I use the parameterization of a report with start date and end date embedded in a power bi premiun it asks me for parameters of start date and end date, but in the table I only have a (1) date field, how can I fix it?
If you're talking about using the Paginated Report visual and mapping to your date parameters, them I would do it using a DAX measure for max date and a DAX measure for min date
I have one question...now that I've done this, I'm trying to embed the paginated report visual into a Power BI. When I'm mapping parameters, I'm not able to use the RequestedDeliveryDate in both the To and the From parameters. Any suggestions on how to get around this? Thanks!
So the report that I am developing a paginated report for has a date requirement to where it is pulling for the last 1102 days (3.01 years). Is it possible to set it to where you can pick the week start data(sundays in my case) and have it only go back to the rolling 3 year mark but set the current date to be the week for the current report (a week prior from current week) and disable future dates?
You should be able to write an expression that sets that as the default parameter. If you've converted the parameter to use a date picker I don't think you can exclude future dates in the parameter. If you're hooked up to a PBI dataset you can probably tweak your Dax to stop the report returning data for future dates (if there even is any)
Is there an issue with Date Parameters when trying to embed a Paginated Report into a Power BI report and link Date Slicers to Date Parameters? Do they have to be the same format?
THANK YOU! I was about to lose my mind -- your WTF?! moment was exactly my reaction.

Fantastic Work Johnny! Many hours spent trying to figure out how to use Date Parameters with a Power BI Dataset as the Data Source. Many thanks!
Thank you so much! This was an absolute lifesaver! I was on the verge of losing my mind trying to get the date range parameters to work!

Thank you so much!! I couldn't find an answer for this anywhere until I watched your video. I'd been struggling with a project for weeks. My hero!!
I had the same look on my face when I saw the generated DAX when I added date parameters. That look is priceless! Great videos!
Thanks. That auto generated DAX really is mind boggling!

Thanks a lot for this one. A great video & so helpful. Also, comedy gold from 3:10 to 3:17 😆
Thanks for the great explanation step by step.
Thanks man. I was not able to make it work if the type in the power bi dataset you connect to is DateTime. It needs to be a Date in the source...
Genious! Was Searching so long to solve this issue. Thank u a lot. Directly got Abo for more stuff like this
Really helpful and saved time
Can you share the Calendar Dax code you created?

what if I were to copy the DAX from a visual because i need the filters that I have on the visual, where do I place the date range parameter ?

one more question, how do you insert default date values from a query... is that possible ?
Great video! Do you know how to add default values to the To and From dates?
I do! I may have to make a video. For any parameter you create, in the parameter properties pane there is an option to set a default. You can use an expression for that too, so far example you could always set the end date to today and the from date to today-30 for example

Really hard to know without taking a look. Definitely sounds like a type mismatch somewhere. Is the parameter showing as calendar control now?

They certainly should have to be the same display format. I expect they do need to be the same data type.
Thank u very much
Thanks
