Mind-blowing Power BI Custom Background Hack Revealed!
OMG...I have been trying to fix two things in my paginated report for two days now. This video solved them both. First, making the column headers show up on multiple pages. Can you believe that the super obvious option in the tablix properties does not work??? The other was a bit more subtle. Johnny didn't even mention it, but I saw him do it. I was getting an extra page after my second table and couldn't figure out how to stop it. I saw Johnny drag the Body space up to the bottom of his table. This fixed my problem. Thanks!!!
Thank you so much for this. The parameters were driving me crazy!
How can i take .bak file? Im using Macbook
Man, this has been a life-saver. Utterly indispensable for using PBI datasets with paginated reports.
Love you! This date thang...giving me PTSD!!! you are a nerve saver!!!!!!!
Thank you sir for putting this video together. This is indeed very helpful. I am new to DAX and this solves my issue. One thing that I was trying this morning was to add a filter in the DAX query. I got it to work now. Thanks again
Did you ever manage to incorporate the data source mapping into the pipeline?
Thank you so much! This was an absolute lifesaver! I was on the verge of losing my mind trying to get the date range parameters to work!
Many thanks! Quick and easy documentation approach. This is perfect for our business users to understand semantic model better
Awesome! Question about calculation group in your solution, can you select multiple filters and conditionally apply them to calculation group of value 1, 2 and 3?
Ahh thank you , this really sorted out my headache , I now have a new problem of how to limit the rows my report fetches.
If you don't have an existing connection, then RESTORE is NOT AN OPTION.........Please update this piece for those of us who have never established a connection before.
Johnny, you rule. I would not have been able to figure out how to print my Header Rows on all pages without your video.
Sir, I am struggling so much to connect to this dataset via Azure and have hunted for hours all over the internet for further information but cannot find anything that can help me figure this out. Please assist.
Question: how do I connect that to an already published dataset? I want it to be an online solution not an on-premises solution.
In the part where you click restore in the connections, I do not have that option available to me. I'm stuck as to how to connect to this database.
Hello, I have a question regarding paginated reports in Power BI. I have an embedded paginated report that calls another drill-through paginated report. When I click the back button from the drill-through report, the main paginated report resets all filter selections to their default values. Is there a way to retain the selected filter values in the main paginated report when navigating back from the drill-through report? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks so much!! Why would they make it so difficult to keep the table header in every page is beyond me!
Even with over 30 years of experience with Microsoft products, I would not have figured that out by myself!! Thank you!
Hi ! thanks for your tips ! just a question, how to display in page Header a parameter, as in your example "Continent" ? Thanks in advance !
Great! Thanks.
Why can't we add the desc within the report itself? Why can't we have mulitple names for columns/measures for display purposes
So good man. The Visual DAX copy method is alot more confusing
Wow, great video explaining the funky date parameters and the automated dax queries report builder generates. You have gained a new subscriber! Cheers!
Great video. One quick thing: is there a reason why your cursor is hidden? Maybe you've updated this on more recent videos but it can be tricky to follow along and see exactly where you are clicking on the screen in the various steps.
Really Good reminder Video if you've done it before and forgotten what is needed to get that parameter in place. That wee 'Hidden' Flag on the query Designer got me... Thanks you've helped me no end with that.
We need more content on using power bi datasets with paginated reports - thank you!
one more question, how do you insert default date values from a query... is that possible ?
Hi, I have an excel file which I want to do data transformation in M. How do I connect the excel file to my VStudio. Already installed SDk and PowerQuery M but it keep asking credentials are required..?
super helpful video nonetheless! this is huge
what if I were to copy the DAX from a visual because i need the filters that I have on the visual, where do I place the date range parameter ?
I'm getting this error when creating a parameter based on a date range "The property 'ValidValues' of report parameter 'FromLoadDataActivityDate' doesn't have the expected type." does anyone know how to fix this ?
Folders don't seem to be recognized in Version Control which is a little annoying...
I was here to learn the advanced technique, but you didn't teach it.
What advanced technique?! Sounds like you know it already 😂
@@johnnyw5627 the thing you literally named "advanced technique" in the chapters. I also would have liked to know how to get rid of the second total row
Boom !!! Folders 💥💥💥💥💥💥
Thanks for the video, very informative. Paul
Thanks for that video, I didn´t realize that folders finally exist :) Funny, that it took so long. Should be a functionality of day one. I assume that publishing to an Power BI app hasn´t changed because of folders, right?
I honestly didn't think it was needed on day one and I still think it's a nice to have. No impact on apps as far as I'm aware.
Nice, had a play around today. Another gotcha is that you can’t publish from PBI desktop into a folder yet either.
@@neilashworth-on8vw oooh.... Nice find
THANK YOU! I was about to lose my mind -- your WTF?! moment was exactly my reaction.
Thank you for these series. True lifesaver!
Excellent video with pros and cons of visual calculations. I definitely like them as it is a quick way of creating calculations. However, I do see the point about ongoing learning. Look forward to the next video. Paul .
Really interested to hear your opinion on this, but the background music is distracting :(
This music in particular or music in general? I really dislike videos without some background music, but I'm still trying to figure what works best.
@@GreyskullAnalytics in general. Everybody is different though
Having business logic in Visual Calcs would be really a bad idea. I agree on that. But I understand Visual Calcs more as a helpful tool for things like running sums of predefined model measures. For me the calculation for a running sum is much better placed in a visual than as another model measure.
Nice shirt!
The bait worked lol. Hopefully visual calcs serve as a tempting introduction to model DAX for the business excel crowd.
The thing that got me excited about Visual Calcs was now I don't need to add a bunch of measures for One-Off type situations. Summing up some of our financial stuff we sometimes have to include/exclude stuff for both actuals and various budget types we have (calculate ... keep filters etc). That works well for a true DAX measure. However I hated having to make a new measure for every variance combination and % of variance etc. So the Visual Clalcs are perfect for that. Running sum also can be a pain and more a One-Off so useful. I saw some posts that showed as the Visual Calcs only have context of the visual they actually run feaster so again another benefit.
Title a bit of click-bait? I agree that self-service BI user is the intended audience for the feature.
I would like to see this idea expanded somewhat, to show the user (where possible) the DAX that actually goes into creating the new measure. With Quick Measures, there is some ability to learn what actually goes into creating a particular measure. But in this case, 'Running Total' isn't going to be available in standard DAX, the user can't get any clues on how to do this better. That being said, if I might use this if I had a sufficiently difficult calculation to create to get to the number I need.
I don’t understand why visual calculations(VC) feature is believed to help those who have difficulties with DAX. To start working with VC one must create a measure in the first place. It’s impossible to start unless you have a DAX measure in a visual, which means unless you know DAX you cannot go any further. For me, the only reason to use VC would be to gain a noticeable performance boost. Actually, I still hope that when this feature is GA the performance of running total calculation will be good enough to think about using VC in production reports. Unfortunately, the performance VC demonstrates now is far from ideal.
Actually, you can use implicit measures in visual calcs. I wish Power Bi did not even allow implicit measurs at all and required the use of explicit measures (like it does if you enable calc groups).
You don't need a measure it works great with implicit measures as well. Perf will be improved over time.
8:50 Agree with you. A quick solution that could create problems down the line. To be fair, this is another attempt from Microsoft to provide Pivot Tables out of Excel. Not sure why they don't develop a "custom visual" that run insert Excel inside PBI to generate Pivot Tables. Why not to have something like when you paste a chart/table from Excel to Power Point in PBI?
How can you bring in multiple reports? This seems to build for one report but if you have multiple and want a data catalogue for everything how could you approach that?
This approach wouldn't cater for that. You could rework it to loop through multiple reports I guess, but doing it programmatically would be harder.
