Who is Dad’s Mystery Woman? 😳 I didn’t know what to say 🥺

  • This disease is progressive and unfortunately in this video Dad goes to a place less attached to reality. Every interaction is different and although we try and be as truthful with Dad as possible. At times like this when he’s in his own world, you have to go to his world. Again, this interaction was difficult and caught me by surprise and you can see me stumble in my response.

Our next door neighbor who had dementia would come over and visit with my husband at least once a day. She was great. She had great sense of humor even though nothing made sense. My husband was so good to her he would just listen and laugh with her. She would stay for about 30 minutes and then say well time to go and off she went. One day towards the end of her life she told him he had always been the one. ❤ Rest in peace Susan we love you.

At 4:28 was a moment of full clarity for Grandpa Salinger.
    Dan: We'll go tomorrow!
    Grandpa Salinger: What is today?
    Dan: It's Saturday!
Grandpa Salinger: Sunday, the bank won't be open.
Though dementia is a very difficult disease, this channel is such a blessing in so many ways.
Dan, you have absolutely no idea how many people you help each day, including myself. 🥹

Before my father who had dementia passed, he constantly said he had to drive people places. It was every night. He was very adamant that the people were here and he had to drive them home. I would tell him it’s getting late and he needed to go to bed, but I would be happy to take them home. I assured him I would make sure that they got home. He would be good with that. I felt I was a spirt Uber driver.

It's common for those who have dementia and Parkinson's, as the disease's progresses, they will begin to see apparitions and interact with people that you cannot see. I remember one lady I used to take care of. I used to think that her house was like a great big train station with all the people coming and going. She would start talking to people who weren't there even children, leaning down and patting them on the head. We would ask her to describe the people and she would tell us what they look like what they were wearing and then she'd even tell us the stories that they had told her about their life. At night we'd hear her talking to them and when we asked her who she was talking to, she would describe what they look like, what they were wearing and what they were talking about.

As full time caregiver to my husband with advanced Alzheimers, I love watching your videos of your dad. I'm sure he's referring to Danielle as to "the woman". In the video from early in the morning when Danielle saw him in the kitchen, you could see he was confused as to why there was a woman in "his house". He thought it was his house and she said she lives with him. That carried over into this video that you took Dan. He's referring to Danielle. Danielle needs a t-shirt that says "I AM DANS WIFE". It's a real gift that your dad can still read! Maybe a big pin that she can wear each day or a cap that says I AM DANS WIFE that she can put on anytime, day or night. His level of confusion is nothing compared to how he will be as the dementia advances. Hopefully since he has vascular dementia and his Blood Pressure is now under control, his dementia won't worsen too much. Either way, you're doing a great job! Hang in there!! 🤞🌷

@joebert3286 My dad is just starting his journey. So, right now, we are learning how to help him when he's confused. In a way, I am very blessed. They live in 2 different states, and I'm the only one residing in one of the states. This allows me special one on one time to learn his quirks and what is and isn't working for him right now. The Salinger's have taught me so much.
I'm so sorry for the losses you have had. 💔

I love how you never chastise him or ever make him feel bad about a question he asks, even if it is completely out of the blue and makes no sense. You just assure him that “you’ll figure it out together”.
The way you handle his questions is the perfect way to handle a family member with dementia.

I love that he's so concerned even when he's having mental issues, though. His number one concern is his kids and making sure they have food and everything that they need. That definitely shows how important that was to him. It can be maddening to repeat the same things over and over again and can upset ourselves and cause us a lot of stress, negatively impacting our own health. Make sure that you have some "you" time at times where you can de-stress. Stress can make blood pressure go up and just has an awful impact impact on everyone.

My friend was only 55 when she was diagnosed ,and had an aggressive form of Alzheimer.
She use to tell her husband about the shadow people.
Once he put her in the nursing home he found out how real the shadow people were.
He first had what he thought was a dream,. He dreamed he wrestled one and it shoved him against the door so hard that the door stopper put a hole in the wall. It was so real he decided to check the wall for the hole, and sure enough there was a hole in the wall.
Then one day while he was wide awake a shadow figured grabbed him around the waste trying to tackle him.
Then it was gone. He felt horrible for not realizing she was actually seeing those things. Rest in Peace Elaine.
