In 1971 at Hayward field in the spring I was in a track meet with Pre but thank God I wasn’t a runner, I threw the discus. I must have thrown against Mac Wilkins that day but I wasn’t in his league but did throw. In my off moments of throwing, I watched this young distance runner, Steve Prefontaine destroy his competition in the 5000 meter. He lapped several runners that day, setting a new American record. I know just where I was standing as he flew by. It was as if there was only one person running that race and he was running after the person in front of him, himself. He left such a mark on me that day in Eugene; I would never give up in my life when it got hard, I would run on guts, like Pre. Thank you Steve, I wish we could have met but at least I was able to see your heart.
There's never been another runner like him.
"The best pace is suicide pace," "and today is a good day to die"
Love it!
Who wants to find out.
@@matthewmc4363 The Greats, as we saw in Steve Prefontaine, all know one thing about pain; it is temporary, so bring it on!
@Noah Immanuel Wait you have gfs?
Oh man I almost forgot to watch this today
Same
He was a legend.!!! I wish he had lived long enough to have competed in the 1976 Olympics.
What an era to live in! Go Pre!
"Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run. I like to make people stop and say, 'I've never seen anyone run like that before.' It's more than just a race, it's a style. It's doing something better than anyone else. It's being creative."
Beatiful
It's a work of art!
Love that quote! 💯
Never thought my two big loves would combine so seamlessly. Go Pre you still inspire.
Wonder how Pre would feel about gutless Joe Biden!!!!
Pre is the GOAT in runners. What a pleasure to see such a gifted athlete. There will NEVER be another one like Pre. So sad to see him go so young.....just imagine what he could have done.....😢
Still makes me cry. I used to walk by his house. It was up the hill from Blossom Gulch where I went to elementary school, where he went as well. At the Football stadium, I can remember hanging around refreshment area as a kid where there was a big track meets going on and someone pointing out that Steve passed right through there on his normal run - "a shortcut." I looked at the area like it was sacred. Everything about that stadium and track felt sacred. I think every person from Coos Bay would say that. My grandmother and his mom Elfriede were very good friends. They died within a month of each other in 2013. The inspiration yet sadness never ends. And I never even met him.
I love this format.
U2 with Prefontaine.
'Pre' was The Man to all the the track distance runners in 1969.
Awesome video thanks for posting this !!
RIP Steve Prefontaine
I learnt about Prefontaine a few years ago and his attitude to life and running is something I carry with me today.
There are no limits.
No one can tell you how far you can't go.
Go as hard as you can and be the absolute best you can be.
Your destiny is exactly that: Yours.
sadly he died from drunk driving
Thats exactly what i think
@Richard Milliken in all fairness, he shouldn't have been DWI but it looks like another driver came into his lane coming around a bend. That driver got off because he was the son of a connected doctor in Eugene. The whole investigation is tainted, according to several sources. Pre did like to drink too much, in my opinion.
@Richard Milliken not drinking is definitely better for you, but after '72 is when Pre broke all those American records. He dropped Viren in the 2 mile in 1973, and the following year got his time down to 8:18. Some of your drops in time could be attributed to physically maturing, which is what people like Bill Bowerman were saying about Pre. He was just starting to physically mature.
Watching him run is like watching a great artist paint a picture. You never know just what it will come out like but you know it will be great in the end! I hope he is running in heaven today!
Incredible clips. Bet every high school cross country runner watches before a race
I know I did 😎
Absolutely Love This!!! Pre pretty much changed me from a sit and kick runner to a balls out leave nothing left in the tank kind of person on and off the track. Thank You Steve Prefontaine
Somebody may beat me today but they’re going to have to bleed to do it - god what a great quote!!
This is IMMENSELY INSPIRING 💪😁
Quite possibly one of the best youtube videos I have ever seen. Wow, amazing!!!
My inspiration to push past my running limits ........Pre lives ❤
I love Pre!! Pure guts!! He's an example of someone with limited gifts who can will themselves to the top with determination. The good always die young 😢😢😢😣😣😣
The kid had TALENT, LOOKS, CHARISMA and most importantly? HEART...RIP PRE!
I come back to the video every couple of weeks for a recharge. Been doin that for about 6 or 7 years now.
Had to watch it 3 times to stop crying.
"Success isn't how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started."
There are only so many incredibly blessed people with talent beyond meaasure...Pre was one !!!!!!!
"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift"- Pre
"if they are gonna beat me, they are going to have to bleed more"
When my injury has finally recovered I will beast it and improve my running, I've learned even if you lose showing 100℅ determination and aggression earns you respect. That's why Pre is a legend and this video captures his essence well! Thanks now I'm off to play halo 3
Two of my favorite things: Steve Prefontaine and U2. Great video.
Steve Prefontaine is and will always be the definition of a true hero.
He exuded confidence in the form of sweat through every pore of his body. So dominant and such a beautiful stride from beginning to end! Forever in our hearts, Pre!
Pre was more than a runner, he was a Rock Star.
I take this man's legacy & embrace it. When I'm fading out there on the blacktop I think about his quotes, some of these legendary races & I push forward. Thanks for this video, the music is a great pairing.
He was an inspiration across all sports and all generations
No matter how many times I watch the ‘72 race, I still believe Pre is going to win.
This is Brilliant,.Love it 💪
"With people like this how could you lose?"
@LIKEABO$$ no it was his opponents. You measure yourself by the greatness of your enemies.
@@ironwolfgaming9632 no, he was talking to the fans in the infield because they we re chereing for him
people will never forget that young man - his fire, his heart, his fearlessness -- only starting to realize his capabilities - RIP Steve
How does this Pre video only have 10,028 views and others have over 100,000? This is by far the best Pre highlight video that I've ever seen. Perfect song choice as well. Great job, thank you for posting. I will save this video and drop in every now and again for some goosebumps and inspiration. Cheers!
he was fast.
Grande Pre!!! GRacias por este recopilatorio tan magnífico!!
Words cannot sum Pre up. Like others have mentioned he ran a race and it was a work of art. Died at 24 and the world is a lesser place because of it. What could have been. We will never know Pre and he did his own thing and ran out front on the track and in the game of life.
A
His life was short. He accomplished a life time of running in his short time on earth. I bet he’s having Fun in heaven. ❤️🙏🏃
Ferocious Competitor w such charisma ...his gift just keeps on giving...Go Pre!
"The best pace is a suicide pace, and today looks like a good day to die." Pre
Sublime ...divino y simplemente el mejor de todos ...fuerza ...coraje ...valor y todo corazon para seguir y seguri corriendo....aimplemente lo maximo
Thank you PRE
That hair was legendary!
A very intelligent fellow in addition to being a great superstar athlete.
What a superb posting footage and music utterly fantastic. Pre Guts Personified.
This is amazing!
He loved his people and they knew it. He ran his heart out for you! Come to Pre Classic May 27-28. Ends at Paddock. Hugs.
quel bel hommage ,il était magnifique ce coureur !!
The Greatest Runner ever and my True Inspiration when out running! Great Video!
No he's not. Bekele is the greatest ever.
I am merely referring to what he did in his short lived lifespan, after all he was taken from us at the very young age of 24, if he had not died and lived a long life as Bekele has.... Lastly as per my comment he is my Inspiration as a Runner myself.
@Richard Milliken read my previous comment. 👍
@Richard Milliken My Original comment should have said "In My Opinion" I know all the Runners you have mentioned are world class but they didn't hold a torch in my eyes to the passion that pre brought to Running. Every Sport there comes a "Once in a Life time person who changes everything" Pre in my eyes did that for running. It's just a shame the Regulations and Authorities all changed after he died but thousands of Runners and the Sport benefited as result and life goes on. If Pre had the same level of support and Training Viren had history back then could be different, guess we will never though. Im inspired by the underdog and the individual who shouldnt be able to do what they do.... But they do, that to me makes a difference to the field they are in and the reason they are spoken about long after they are gone with or without Medals. 👊👍
@Richard Milliken Also 1000% with your comment on Shorter another legend in my eyes. 👍
Perfect song, GO PRE!
"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more." PRE
David Goggins was born a couple months before Pre's untimely death in 1975. He passed the pain and suffering torch to Goggins.
Your attitude and mentality determines your performance. Yes, training, diet, and rest are all extremely important. However, when you’re up on that line, about to race, nothing but positive self belief in yourself will carry you to the end. Having absolute, full belief and confidence in your ability to do your best is the ultimate factor. That’s magical…
“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” -Steve Prefontaine
My senior quote!
good bumps the entire time
By the way, Michael Muller? THANK YOU so much for this lovely tribute to Pre, the song and the video goes perfect together....
I concur excellent choice.
Imagine, in the last minute of his life, how hard his heart worked to keep him alive?
What did Pre die from?
@@jeffmiller4204 car accident. His car an MG convertible rolled over and he was pinned underneath it slowly crashing him to death.
@@btqy which is so ironic considering his lung capacity and strength!
Amazing!
The legend
Beautiful running style!
Very aggressive!
What I noticed about this amazing game runner , besides a fantastic rythymn to his racing style are 2 things: that huge barrel chest which like secretariat must have given enough him extra oxygen and upper body chest and heart strength....and the other, of course, is that long legs stride.
He got no idea of what he does best. Genius
from pre to rupp..oregon has produced some of the best ever americans
He wanted to run the mile when he first came to Oregon but Bowerman put him in longer distances like 3,000. Pre said that no one watches the 3,000. Bowerman told him give them a reason to watch and that he did. It became the prime event whenever Pre was in the field.
Champion runner as brilliant philosopher.
Go pre
Go Pre!...
Sharolyn Shepherd what does that mean in English?
Sharolyn Shepherd put the Drugs down, you're a fregin Weirdo.
"Pre's People" documentary has cool, unseen stories, photos and film of Pre in his younger days!
Dios mio mi de porte Favorito
The finalists waited anxiously in the room. Then, five minutes before they were to go out on the track,
. . . we realized we were all thinking exactly the same thing - Lasse Viren wasn’t there. Just then, in walks Viren, like the imperial king. Officials checked his hip numbers and his spikes, and then he sat down, all by himself. He put his elbows on his knees and just slowly looked around at everyone in the room, one by one, as if to say, “I’m here guys.” And the race was over then. I’ve never seen a presence like that.
--Garry Bjorklund in From Running with the Legends
That blood doping must of ran him a little behind for the race

Would like to hear the Announcers ... but THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD !
good video man
Definition of the word "racing"- STEVE PREFONTAINE
@njcisaballer I just realized I can't because of copyright infringement, which is bullshit!!! I'm not trying to profit from this video. I only made the video for the enjoyment and motivation of others.Thank you to all for the positive responses this video has received. Unfortunately we live in a world where greed and profits rule the day. Nevertheless, "Pre lives" on through each and everyone us that practice the same hard-work and determination on and off the track.GOD SPEED!!!
lots of people think of Nike and they say .. hey the House that Jordan Built....I say Steve PreFontaine is Nike! a kid from Coos bay! it does get more Oregonian than that !
"The best pace is a suicide pace, and today is a good day to die."
-Pre
he was secretariat
hicks727 so true
FUCKING AMAZING!!!
Because they gave 110 percent
@njcisaballer How do I do that? I'm assuming your from NJ too; Monmouth County here.
🤗🤝🇮🇱🇵🇦Dios mio Hombre de valores
dopers really piss me off
Pre lives
I was a runner s a kid when he was doing his legendary runs but because we had such shit people director's and non existing track programs in Detroit I missed out on this mans history until my oldest brother told me about him.
Oh what might have been had he not gone up Hendricks Park that night. I remember when he died and i was so angry with him.
@ 5:56 He says a last lap 58 sec quarter is't too bad.... Wtf man hes too good.
Ne plus ultra
I believe he would have won in Montreal (1976). He just needed a few more races against the Europeans. Viren was good, but Steve would have been better in 1976!
Watching that 1976 5000 metres finish, I can imagine Prefontaine right in the thick of it, or maybe even a few yards ahead, and this time holding on to the line, as he had been working on his finishing speed throughout 74 and early 75. That would have benefited him in the 76 Olympic year.
He wasn't even ranked in top 10 in world at his death. All those 1500 meter runners moved up to 5000 and passed him.
What race is at 3:03?
Prefontaine did not win Olympic Gold....Tiger and Michael actually won championships. Hats off to Prefontaine though....he was one of the best to do it.
Pre would have for sure won gold in the next olympics had he not died prior to. 😢😢😢
Lasse Virin the original Track and Field Blood doper! In a couple shots. Pre kicked his ass, clean!
13:26,4:)
What kind of name was Prefontaine
What is the music doing on this video? Spoiledi t!
Pre would have won Gold if he would have let the others runners take the lead and he put the burst of speed in - in the last 300 meters.
Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan definitely need a statute from Nike....if they don't already have one.
One Love no Just stop. The fact that you’re on this post would make one believe that you’re a Pre fan. Obviously not
