omg I did NOT expect people to start talking
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
We may hate Mrs Bennett all we want, but her trick of sending Jane on horseback in heavy rain did indeed make Mr Bingley fall in love with her. Moreover, it also helped Lizzy when she visited Jane, since Mr Darcy also fell for her when she was staying with them.
She knows how the game is played!
@@maddiesenator5491 I think you sympathize with her more when you remember the context. I loved the line in the 2005 version when Lizzie says in exasperation, “Is marrying off your daughters all you think about” and Mrs. Bennet turns to Lizzie and says, “When you have 5 daughters, tell me what else will occupy your thoughts.” You can almost hear Mrs. Bennet think, “I may sound crazy, but we have no sons, no one to inherit the house and very little savings. I am right to be anxious about this.”
Well, she had also almost ruined their chances by her display of presumption at Mr. Bingley's ball, by not disciplining Lydia, and by encouraging Mr. Collins to marry Lizzie. So, really it was more luck than Mrs. Bennett's doing which makes her character all the more ridiculous (but in a funny way) because we just know how she'll brag about how she had planned it all. Hence I've always thought of P&P as a romantic comedy.
I don't hate her for she reminds me so very much of my own mother
I just want to know just how the match between Mr and Mrs Bennett occurred. They clearly have little in common and have a basic disdain for each other. HOW DID THESE PEOPLE GET MATCHED AND HOW THE HECK DID THEY STAY ON GOOD ENOUGH TERMS TO PRODUCE THOSE GIRLS?!?!
Pure perfection! Not only in explaining the dress of the time but the awkwardness of the scene, spot on the actors did amazing!!
I love how you reminded us that if Mrs. Bennet was 18 when she had her first child, she'd be 41 in this scene. Not exactly the old grandma we often picture. lol
In those days not that many people made 'old bones' so to speak, so as she had her first child very early she would have been considered senior at 41 in the period, she'd had five daughters, that would have put her in the 'soon to be granny' category.
@@OdeInWessex I actually lived in an impoverished neighborhood where, by the time I moved out at age 32, it wouldn’t have been unusual for me to be a grandmother. Really changes your perspective to move to a place where people were having their first kids in their late twenties, only half an hour away.
When the actor who played Mr. Wickham in 1995, Adrian Lukas, entered his 60s, he created and performed a one-man-show from the perspective of Mr. Wickham in his 60s. It was fascinating how the actor mentioned that while he couldn’t play a handsome rouge anymore, he still had many years to live life. However, Mr. Wickham might be heading towards the end of his life at that age. Crazy to think about.
I also have to imagine that with the number of children Mrs. Bennet had and the way her husband married her despite not being in tune with her intellectually, she was probably hot stuff at age 18. But it does make you wonder if she’d be a Kate Beckinsale-look alike at age 40 or more like a grandma type. Humans come in many forms. Lol
Yes, but 41 by their standards wasn't 41 by mine. (Holy cow, I'm old enough to have grown up kids by now!) Nutrition and medical care, even in richer families, wasn't as good as it is now, having five viable pregnancies would have taken its toll on her.
The romance of fashion collides with the romance of the Jane Austen era. It's always the detail in fashion that is overlooked; the embroidery; the cut and style; how dresses can be so elegant and eye-catching. In this mini-series, the costumes will no doubt enchant whilst making a social statement that suitors' cannot fail to miss.
LOVE how you cast Mary with an actress who fits the period beauty standards while also still looking like she could be sisters with the other Bennets
Having more historically accurate clothing from other movies/ books would be lovely
Agreed!
YES!
OOOO-especially if they did different genres, like gothic horror (Frankenstein), or adventure (around the world in 80 days) (I'd also like to see some American books!)
Anne of Green Gables would be fun!!
And 1920s costumes from The Blue Castle!
This was delightful! Everyone did a great job, but Mrs. Bennet was utterly perfect. Also, proof that Jane Austen did cringe comedy very well! (And to be continued...are we getting the Lizzy/Darcy proposal too???)
Cringe comedy, indeed. I had to read this book in high school, and the entire thing reminded me of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I had only watched one episode of that show, and the entire book reminded me of them.
He even wears a blue coat!
Excellent attention to detail!
How illuminating to see this performed in the dress of the time it was written! It really is a fresh perspective.
Classic Jane. While rejoicing in the best thing to ever happen to her, half her mind goes to guilt that not everyone else can be as happy as she is. 😂
Hello how’re you doing?
I love how Mrs. Bennet's clothes look like earlier 18th century gowns she would have worn during her youth. Merely reshaped for the 1790s modern silhouette.
Um early 18th century would have been before Mrs Bennett was even born😬
If we are saying that the story is “supposed” to be 1790 and Mrs Bennett is 41 years old that means she would have been born in 1749 which puts her birth MID 18th century. When she was a young woman that would be late 1760s early 1770s. So also not early 18th century. Also the Bennett’s are landed gentry so this idea that a wealthy family isn’t staying up to date on fashion is ridicules. Mrs Bennett has a clothing allowance and is expected to be fashionably dressed for her station as the mistress of Longbourn.
But can we please talk about their hair. The actress hair are all way too long in the front. They would need to have shorter haircuts in the front for the rag curls to do their job. This looks way too sloppy for what I usually see on this channel. Man they let their standards slip because they wanted to do a seen from the book more then doing accurate fashion history 😓
Often that's what they would've done, reused the fabric!
@@talosheeg I really love the idea of people reshaping their favorite dresses as styles changed.
This is by far the best film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice I have ever seen! It made me teary, and I wish it were the whole book!
Same here! This is the best casting I've seen out of any adaptation. I want a whole new miniseries but using this casting director.
What a wonderful video!!! I can almost feel like I’m there at Longbourn!
For anyone who hasn’t read Pride and Prejudice, READ IT NOW!
I’m ashamed to say that because I’m a man from the Southern US, I was always told Pride and Prejudice was “just a romance book for women” and I didn’t have the courage to challenge that sexist nonsense when I was younger. It took me decades before I decided to read it while bored during lockdown last year. It is now my favorite book of all time and I am PROUD to say that I have binge-watched the 1995 series too many times to count.
So for anyone putting off reading Austen and particularly P&P (especially the men out there), the sooner you read it, the sooner you will be able to fall in love with this masterpiece and the genius that is Jane Austen. I’m actually jealous you’ll get to have the magical experience of reading it for the first time!! So, hurry up and open the darn book!
It’s so unfortunate that modern audiences think of Austen as romance, when she had such a satirical wit! Her books are funny and well-written, and I’m so pleased every time someone gets to encounter them for the first time, and then come to love them as well as I!
Amen!
Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book in the world. Historical clothing is my favorite thing in the world. This is now my favorite channel on UA-cam! Please, please do continue!
And mine. Have you worked through Crow's eye's back catalogue? There are some lovely pieces in there, they did a fabulous WWI series that's really worth watching - especially as they also produced a book of the knitting patterns too!
@@OdeInWessex I have! I've always wanted to get into making clothes myself instead of just scouring antique stores, and these videos are sorely tempting me to get a sewing machine...
@@beek.4860 Have a look at Bernadette Banners channel, she has some video's on hand sewing period dress that might interest you. In the meaning Happy Christmas to you and yours, wherever you are!
It's fascinating how in the text, Mrs. Bennet goes on the "hang Kitty" rant on one day but the proposal doesn't happen until Mr. Bingley has been there for a full day and then comes back the second day. But it just wouldn't make sense to for a filmmaker to film those 2 whole days, which is why both you and the directors of the 1995 version made it one day. And by making it all in one day, it makes Mrs. Bennett seem way more effective than she is in that moment. 😂
I've never seen an adaptation that didn't blend the two days together. Like you say, I can see why a filmmaker would rather get to the point.
I honestly thought it was extremely rude of Mr Bingley, he would have known that the ladies probably wouldn't have been fully dressed yet, however there he is barging in far too early in the day. I understand that he was anxious to see Jane, but still bad form fir a gentleman
As though everyone's most beloved himbo, Charles Bingley, would ever SIT in the presence of a lady who was STANDING. Goodness.
Jane Austen thought he would: "Not a syllable was uttered by either; and Elizabeth was on the point of going away again, when Bingley, who as well as the other had sat down, suddenly rose, and whispering a few words to her sister, ran out of the room."
The girl playing Jane is adorable.
The stays are spiral laced 😍 I am deceased.
This production company has done an outstanding job as always. The awkwardness of their first meeting was spot on. Beautiful clothing.
Hello how’re you doing?
Your Mr Bingley is so adorable! I love how you played out the whole scene straight from the book (and giving Kitty a bit of sauce.) Looking forward to the next one on the series.
Augh! The To Be Continued haunts me again!!
Ooh just hanging out in your bathrobe for brekky!
Hello how’re you doing?
This cast needs to make another P&P series. STAT!
Beautiful attention to detail - Well done everyone! Special mention to our client Gwyneth for her wonderful portrayal of Jane! X
I wish her all the luck in the world and hope she goes far.
I have seldom been so excited by the words "to be continued."
Oh, well done! The first time that the costumes befit the time the book was actually written, too. So appreciate it.
Absolutely gorgeous!! Worth the wait!! And Mrs B did not disappoint!🥰
OMG it is finally here! I shall have a seizure! I need my smelling salts! I can not wait 😍
The actors are cast so well. The age is very appropriate. Jane Austen films always cast them too old for the roles.
In the 2005 version, you had a 19 year old playing a 20 year old (Keira Knightley), a 19 year old playing an 18 or 19 year old (Talulah Riley as Mary), a 19 year old playing a 17 year old (Carey Mulligan as Kitty) a 20 year old playing a 15 year old (Jena Malone as Lydia), a 25 year old playing a 22 year old (Rosamund Pike as Jane), a 30 year old playing a 28 year old (Mathew Mcfadgen as Darcy), a 30 year old playing a 27 year old (Claudie Blakey as Charlotte), and a 17 year old playing a 16 year old (Tamzin Merchant as Georgiana). So that film was awfully close. However, the 1995 version had actors way older at the time of filming, so that’s def. true for some adaptations.
@@laurenconrad1799 Agreed! Although Mr. & Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Collins were cast far too old (in both versions). Mr. Collins was supposed to be in his early twenties. Also S&S 1995 - Lovely as Emma Thompson is....she was supposed to be 19.
@@maryhamric Definetly! They always cast Collins as 20 years older at least. After I wrote the comment, I googled Sense and Sensibility actor ages. Kate Winslet was a couple years older but not crazy old. Emma Thompson was a different story 😂. But they still did look an awful lot like sisters. Emma seems to have been played by a variety of actresses between 21 and 27, so she varies a bit.
Omg the mother busting into the room made me laugh!
Your actors are beautiful and wear their costumes like they belong in them!!
This should be an edition of Pride and Prejudice all its own! I love it!
To be continued! Oh my goodness I am excited. Is it too much to hope we might also see some gentlemen get dressed?
Yes! I’d like to see men’s dressing and clothing as well.
I'm so happy these are back!!!
Even better than I thought it could be :D thank you so much again for the beautiful glimpses into the past
I now need this full adaptation. Wonderful!
Thank you for transferring a narrative piece on a historical dress to one of my favourite scenes from P+P. Wonderful acting. It felt really immersive ❤
I absolutely adore this. This was fantastic. I normally love watching these videos. Having a Pride and Prejudice one is such a treat.
I have a theory that the Chemise a la Reign of 1780s inspired the Regency Era silhouettes. Maybe people were tired of all the opulence and show of Rococo gowns.
I’ve also heard that the French Revolution made people want garments that were looser with less structure to symbolize how they were trying to dismantle structures of oppression (also rich women could afford more structured gowns in the 1700s). Apparently that’s why the Regency era had looser dresses than the century before or after.
Emma Hamilton also changed fashion ;)
Beautiful costumes.
Beautifully made scene and thank you for all the attention to detail! The music was absolutely charming as well!
Wonderful production! Ah! I had chills! Thank you for recreating this iconic scene!
Awesome video! I love most adaptations of P&P, but I do think it'd be cool to have a full movie actually set properly in the 1790s and with the 1790s fashion and hair. Most productions either choose the date it was actually published (1813) or just some nebulous date from 1795- 1815, and then they mix up all the fashions from that era (ahem 2005 P&P). So you have characters that look like they're dressed in clothes from 1796 and characters dressed in clothes from 1812. Which is a bit silly.
I agree with you so much.
That's not too far-fetched. People didn't buy new clothes often, they would re-wear or re-make existing clothes. Older generations probably continued wearing the fashions they were familiar with (as they do now). So it wouldn't be unusual to see people wearing fashions covering a 20-year period.
I love this! All the actors did such a lovely job. I’m always partial to Mrs. Bennett though, she’s just a hilarious character.
Favorite You Tube Channel, ever. Always has been, always will be!
Just excellent. Thank you for all your hard work. Can't wait for more!
Absolute brilliance! I smiled watching the whole video! This is it, the best depiction of Pride and Prejudice with historically accurate costumes! And this still to be continued? Can't wait to see what will you depict next! My vision says it'll be evening dress part.
Thank You!! It is PERFECT and I adore the clothes, how times have changed.🥰
This was such a joy to watch! Not only for the tutorial on dress, but the lovely scene as well!
Cannot wait to see Mr Darcy to propose to Elizabeth soon.
This was done so well! I hadn't watched your channel before, but the algorithm showed me this and I will definitely stay tuned for more!
Omg you all did a wonderful job ! It was lovely and delicate ! 😍
Filmed at the home of the Wesleys, I see! How wonderful, what a perfect location
Brilliant! Everything so carefully done! And I especially liked the "to be continued" part at the end! 😉🤣
Wow! Absolutely sublime! Perfect in every way! And I've always preferred the fashions of this transitional period over the more popular Regency period.
I loved this, and I'm so glad you left the door open for a part 2! :)
I AM SO HAPPY!!!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!
This made my day! Thank you and love to all the wonderful Amy adorable actors!
I was so giddy watching this, I can't wait for part two!
Bravo, this was lovely! I can't wait to see the next part! ❤
I've been looking forward to this one! And it was truly lovely
This was beautifully done! Wonderful video!!
Fabulous! Great job by the actors too!
This was so beautiful!!!! ❤ P&P is my comfort book since I read it as a teenager.
Pride & Prejudice is my all time favourite book. This was a delight to watch 😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️
I'm so excited that my favorite historical fashion channel is doing a production of my favorite historical novel!!! 💗 You are doing such a great job with this Crow's Eye Productions!
That was amazing. Loved it. Cant wait for the next instalment.loved the person doing mrs bennet.spot on
This is a true masterpiece! I loved every second ❤️
Wow!!! What an amazing performance!! I smiled, giggled, and experienced second hand embarrassment! Mrs. Bennett was truly hilarious. Oh I can't wait for the continuation. I can see this being in a longer format. Thank you.
Love how the music matches with the eyebrow quirks 😂😂
Awesome job!!❤
Hi, I'm just rewatching this with enjoyment. I hope the sequel is going well!
Oh I so enjoy being off of lock down. And started to be back to more normal routine.Even seeing my favorite UA-cam
channels. Merry Christmas to you all.👼🌟🎶
That was marvellous.
Playing the part of Mrs Bennet would be so much fun. Right up there with Lena Lamont.
Stunning to watch
As wonderful and informative as ever 🥰
I can't tell you how happy I was to see a little scene of Mrs. Bennet getting anxious about Mr. Bingley coming down; it was absolutley lovely in the middle of the dressing information.
That was soooooooooo adorable. Soooo cute. I can't even. Ahem and of course the actual purpose of the video was well done as always. But p&p is my favourite book so I will rewatch this again and again. Wonderful.
AMAZING!!!
Pleeease do one about ancient egyptians
I didn’t watch this straight away but kept it as a treat. It didn’t disappoint. ❤
Dont u have compassion for my poor nerves Mr.Bennet, post it already!
Oh you mistake me, my dear. I have the highest respect for them. They've been my constant companions these twenty years
Oh dear I couldn’t stop shaking from how beautiful that was❤
This is so lovely and well made!
A masterpiece. Loved it. ❤
Love this! Chills
Hello how are you doing?
I love that there's a moment at 4:30 where you see Mr. Bingley question whether this is really worth it.
So wonderful
I didn’t know Jane Austen was only 20 when she wrote this! I have been doing a bit of a re read of her books lately - wonderful stuff.
Love Mrs. Bennett! What a perfect actress.
Oooh this is nice! I love all your historic dress videos, but acting out some of P&P makes it even better!!!
What a very well done production! I would watch a full length movie done by you. So, quite entertaining as well as educational. Now I am going to have to binge watch all your videos, lol. Thank you for all your hard work.
Yay! Love these!
Its amazing more plis😊
I love it! I'm sharing this!!
Hahaha, Mrs. Bennett really steals this whole scene. So lovely!!!
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!! Xo
Would love to see a Howards End and French Lieutenants Woman ones seeing they are also books......
Yes! 😊
The acting is amazing! I love everything!
I have never wanted to read pride and prejudice, but because of this video it's going to be on my read list!! 😁
Hurry up and read it !! In Jamaica, Pride and Prejudice was among the books I had to read for the General Certificate of Education ( GCE) Literature Exam set by Cambridge University. I have loved the book ever since the early 1960s as romance. As I grow older and better understand the economic situation of that class of young women; no Bennet sons to inherit the property; the looming predicament of Mr Bennet's estate entailed to another male relative; and seeming disinterest of Mr. Bennet to the cloud hanging over his unmarried daughters; I understand and sympathize with Mrs. Bennet's motives much better.
READ IT NOW!!! I’m ashamed to say that because I’m a man I always dismissed Pride and Prejudice as just a romance book for women. It took me decades to read it before I gave it a go during lockdown last year. It is now my favorite book and I have binge-watched the 1995 series too many times to count. The sooner you read it, the sooner you will be able to fall in love with it and Jane Austen. I’m actually jealous you’ll get to have the magical experience of reading it for the first time!!
@@nailartguy3363 Me too!
Do read it, you will see all the subtle humour that the films invariably fail to catch because it's not obvious enough. The more you read of Jane the more you realise she was an acutely sharp observer of human nature and all it's foibles, and was also very, very funny. I've always thought it was a real tragedy for English Lit that Cassandra burned all her correspondence. I imagine it would have been hilarious!
The book is well written-I hope you enjoy it!
