Check out the full series: sheepandstitch.com/how-to-knit/
Today you’ll learn how to bind off in knitting once you’re finished your project. How exciting!
At this point, you’ve got some rows of knitting under your belt. You should be very proud of yourself! You’ve used two sticks to transform a loose bundle of string into a knitted rectangle. Now it’s time to get your knitting off the needles.
To bind off knitting, you’ll start on a new row and knit the first two stitches. Now you’ve got two stitches on your right needle.
Take the first stitch and bring it over the second stitch. Think of the first stitch leapfrogging over the second. Now you’ve got one stitch on the right needle. The other stitch has been bound off.
Knit one more stitch from the left needle. Once again, you have two stitches on your right needle. Take the first stitch and leapfrog it over the second stitch. Another stitch has been bound off!
Continue in this manner until one stitch is left on your needle.
TIP: When binding off, remember that you always need TWO STITCHES on the right needle. No more and no less. One stitch is the leapfrogger, and the other one is waiting be leapfrogged over. Binding off is a game for two.
When you’ve got one stitch left, cut the strand of yarn, leaving a tail of 5-6 inches. Thread that yarn into the last stitch and pull tight. Your bind off is secure. Huzzah!
Now your project is complete. It’s all grown up and ready to enter the real world!
You’ll find tutorials and guides for making a Slip knot, Cast On, Knit Stitch and Bind Off. These techniques form a sturdy foundation for knitting.

I started knitting a scarf three years ago and NOW I’m looking up how to finish it off 🤦♀️😂
Same 🤣
Wow
I felt this comment on a spiritual level🤣
Same
2 years for me 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for this. My grandmother helped me start a scarf and I never finished it. She died years ago and tonight I watched this and finished the scarf she helped me start. It was bittersweet, but I'm so grateful to have watched this video. I didn't know how to case off before this.
The same happened to me but my grandmother has alzheymer so she can't knit anymore. I'm sorry for your loss 💛🙏🏻
I’m so glad you’re finishing the project you both started together. Take good care of the scarf!
Awesome
Shed be so proud 🥺
I know how you feel😢
I am making a tiny blanket for a frog that lives in my yard, and your tutorials have been very useful.
@@Grace.f.06 yes! since it is winter, the frog is hibernating. I will give him the blanket once he wakes up.
@@possumbell7419 PLEASE keep us updated on if the frog likes it 💞
This is freaking adorable. Are they still hibernating? And does the frog have a name? 🐸🧣
i have never loved a comment sm
THATS SO CUTE
I genuinely watch this every time I have to cast off because I’m still not good at that
Glad to help!
Its ok! Keep up your good work and never give up reach your goals and im writing this at 00:42AM but keep UP your good and amazing work!
same 😑
I COULD have been able to remember stuff but NOoOo I have to memorize EVERY detail of my childhood!

Go slow! You got this!
@@sheepandstitch
Thank you Soo much... I DID IT 🙌🙌🙌
Same 😂
Same, my back is SOOO dead XD
My stress skyrockets while caring off too bc I desperately don't want to me up my whole knitting
Thank you so much! My mom and my sister both were knitting blankets when they each passed away... I haven't a clue how to knit, but wanted to finish their work off to preserve their projects. This was exactly what I needed!! Thank you! ❤
Me: *crying over ruining my knitting, failing to cast off*
The music in the background: *cheery jazz*
I messed up my one too im crying rn 😭
Sorry.
Literally crying such a sad experience
Omg literally I have no idea what I’m doing and I made such a cute scarf😭😭😭
Update: I failed and my long 3 weeks of hard work is gone😔
Best tutorial ever! So easy to understand. I finished off my scarf with no issues and it looks so neat. Thanks so much! :)
Ok did not end well for me me and my goddoughter
Did not end well for me

I realized, after I started the cast-off row, that I was actually doing a crochet slip stitch. I switched out a crochet hook for the right needle, and AMAZING! So much easier!! Now, I’m sure that is very unconventional, so I apologize if I just cause more confusion. I just thought that might be a fun experiment for crossover crochet/knit people 😁
That makes so much sense! I'm going to try that next time. Wow.
You are a GENIUS!!💖
Thank you , this really helped !
I thought the same thing! Will definitely try that as well. :D
Me, who is just using two pencils to knit with: *I mean, it does work!*
Goodness, I wish I had thought of that months ago when I couldn't find knitting needles anywhere. I had one set and lost one. Since then I've bought more sets.
I use sharpened chopsticks they are actually really good!
throwback to my college dorm using pencils as chopsticks too
@@karlarenee6032
Oop-
After I got my first pair of knitting needles I wanted more so I decided to just use pencils lol! They worked fine
Every two years, I'll forget how to knit due to lack of practice. Thanks for the re-teaching me!
Yes!!!! I'm totally going to do this now. I have like 12 hours in an airport to kill. So excited.
Oh! I just realized that I cld knit o an airplane, I was SUPER scared of airplanes cuz once ur on u gotta find something to do.
How did that go?
@@juniper3526 LOL, I started and finished 3 scarves for my children on that trip. I'd say as a novice knitter I did pretty well
Dumb question, do airport security give you any trouble about knitting needles? Does the material or size matter?
@@Newtlevitator you should probably just get wooden ones or take them out of the bag. taking your knitting needles of all things would be pretty ridiculous... but they do already take pretty ridiculous stuff, so good luck with that lmao
How many people watched that last part 10 times in a row?
Ay!
I did! Lol but I finally made the tiny blanket for my tiny stuffy 😂
@Xxx_Joy_xxX That's so cute! ;-; I messed up on the last stitch and lost my swatch... ;-;
I still am
I actually watched that for 30 mins!😂
When you said "there comes the fun part" you made my stress level go wayy down. Thank you so much!!
It made mine skyrocket! 😂
What do I do with the threads? So you have a tutorial on that?
Just did the cast off on my tiny project. The most stress I've ever been in to this date. Definitely messed up in the middle where I confused myself 10x more than I already was but continued nonetheless to the last stitch which was the embodiment of stress. By then I had already wiled my shaky hands twice and somehow managed to pull through without messing up once again. The stitch isn't nearly up to standard but it works and I'm proud of myself. Definitely would recommend practicing casting off on a tiny knitted material instead of going directly to your project worth a few months.
Absolutely amazing, I use to knit with my nana when I was a kid, now I’m 21 and I’ve never finished a project 😂 have watched how to start, knit, now finish off and these videos are so helpful
Other people have said this,
but I watch this video when I finish every project.
Thank you for teaching me almost everything I know about knitting.
Your knitting tutorials are so helpful! I picked up knitting over 2 months ago and I have knitted 4 scarves (Currently on my 5th one). Thanks so much for your help.
I love your tutorials! I’ve gone through multiple, looking for one that i could understand, and yours are exactly what i needed! Multiple repetitions to explain a certain movement, clear way of explaining, i never held needles in my life and thanks to your tutorial i just finished my first scarf! 10/10, i will recommend your videos to anyone who starts their knitting journey :)
Yea her videos are great!
Thank you for this video I'm 12 and this really helped me with this stuff!
Omg same im 11 about to be 12 and im knitting a scarf!
Ooh same I’m working on a scarf it’s almost doneeeee
i thought i was the only kid who was knitting :) nice to know there are other nerds out there (no offense to anyone)
@@shizayakoob5338 same!!I also thought I was the only kid knitting!
SAME :OOO
Its sooo easy! When watching other channels, they're so confusing to me. Thank you Sheep & Stitch😊
This is my favorite part really. I had no problems with your method. It reminds me of binding off on a Loom. I have tried that a little bit and that maybe why I am understanding the knitting better than crochet. I have done several practice squares this week. I think am ready to take on a simple project.
You are my fav knitting UA-camr by far!! I just started a few months ago and your videos are the easiest to follow along and you don't go off on weird tangents. Thank you so much!
I am so proud of myself for learning to knit! I got frustrated at first but pushed through and it's such a great feeling.
i thought i did it step by step but at the end when tighting up that last loop once off the needle , it completely unraveled the whole cast off resulting in a ruined project.
Oh no! Same but I fixed it when it unraveled 2! I used tweezers to PULL the yarn thru! I mean...if your project is falling apart, u SHLD try to find way to fix it, I'm sorry I cldnt be there!
Same but instead of ruining it I tied a knot. Ripppp
Sad
@@snipervolley4436 I did the same! I have a weird bow shaped knot finishing it off
Dude, I'm sorry. I usually make a little knot, tying the end to the actual scarf multiple times. It might come out a little tacky, but it gives me peace of mind.
I absolutely love how clear this was. Thank you so much, I'm excited to knit my first scarf. ❤
This is so helpful, so easy to follow. Finished my first scarf 😊 and I can’t wait to give it as a gift
Have been teaching myself to knit; finally purchased the yarn to make a block-of=the-month knitted afghan from a pattern in Knit Simple magazine that I have been saving since 2017! With covid, I took the plunge, and with the help of your excellent tutorials helping me cast on and bind off, I am well on my way to make this afghan! These are saved in my favorites 4-ever!
Thank you for these tutorials!! Just finished my first scarf literally 10 seconds ago because of this video, so stressful but it's finally done!!! :D
I just finished my first scarf!! I am so happy lol. Thanks so much for these wonderful videos!
Thank you. I just finished my first project using this tutorial. I started knitting a few weeks ago and I am hooked. My First scarf.. done! Yay!
I absolutely adore you 😭🥰 I haven't knit since I was in 5th grade and now I'm 25! I was finally able to use yarn I've had for over a decade and made a windowsill cozy for my cat! We both thank you!!
Thank you so much!! I just learned how to knit today from one of my dad's freiends, but it had been a while since she knit, so she forgot how to cast off. This was super helpful and easy to follow!
Just finished casting off using this video and I can confirm IT WORKS
it didn't work for me
Me either
Thank you for these awesome tutorials! They are so easy to follow, and not so repetitious that I feel like I’m waiting for the next step. I’ve been crocheting since I was 7 years old (only child that needed a hobby) and picked up knitting a few years ago, but it still intimidates me. So now I’m starting over again, and working on swatches to get the rhythm and learn the stitches! I am excited and nervous about getting to the cables! 🤞🏼 with your help I think I’ll do fine!
You sound like you’ll be a great knitter in no time! The key is practice and patience!
I finished my first project 😁🧶 It’s just a little blanket but it’s the first thing I’ve been able to finish without getting frustrated and giving up. You gave good instructions. thanks for the videos
Bruh why does her knitting look so good and neat. I dunno what I did but my knitting at the bottom (cast on) isn’t even a straight line!
shes got lots of practice! keep trying! after just a year my knitting got a lot neater :)
Don’t pull too tight
Make sure you're casting off loosely. Keep.even tension and try not to pull the loops too far away while maneuvering the needles 🖤
experience hun!! I promise if you keep it up you’ll be just as good :) it’s a learning process, knitting can be very difficult so be patient & take your time! most importantly find what works best for you
I’ve been knitting for only 2-3 days and it’s really that it’s not straight because sometimes we separate a stitch when it doesn’t all come on our other needle
Thank you SO MUCH. This was the easiest toturial EVER
For the first time in my life, three weeks ago I started knitting a scarf and your video came on time to learn how to finish it off - very helpful and easy!
Thank you and be blessed!
PS: my knitted scarf looks amazing as a first time and can't believe my 'gold hands' did it lol 🥰
I had forgotten how to cast off…so glad that I discovered this.
I will carry on knitting simple stuff like leg-warmers, scarfs and squares to stitch together to become a bedspread or wall hanging! ❤️👍🏻🇳🇴
Her channel is so underrated every step is so easy to understand and she doesn’t go too fast
Thank you very much for this 💕 Clear, short and exactly what I needed^^ I appreciate precise beginner friendly how-to videos
I realy appreciate how slow you were going and explaining as you went on! Zooming in and using big supplies made everything easier to see! I spent hours looking for videos that would help me finish a mug warmer for my mom, but they were all too fast and difficult to make out. Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much for the idea about the last loop to secure the last bind off stitch. It's so simple and much easier than other options out there to neaten the last cast off stitch. Simplicity is the greatest sophistication!😃👍🏿
I’m so thankful for these videos, I’ve never knitted before but wanted to, managed to make a handle for my grandads bingo bag for him 🥰
Thank you, thank you and thank you. I'm about to start my journey with circular needles and needed to know how to cast/bind off for a simple scarf. Again, thank you for a clear and precise video!
You're very welcome. Happy knitting!
My local yarn shop convinced me to buy circular needles; I was skeptical because I had never tried them. They said I would love them, and I really do! so much easier on your hands and arms and no worries of losing your project. And the ones I bought are so pretty!
Thank you so so much for your beginner videos. They are absolutely priceless. I’ve just finished my first 🧣 scarf thanks to you ☺️ I’ve wanted to learn for yrs but never thought I’d be dexterous enough 😂
I had no idea on how to knit. I have known in the past but stopped and each time I just pulled it off and started again this time I decided to learn and I was so happy. Thalnk you for putting online tutorials for everyone to learn!
Seriously one of the best UA-camrs for knitting! Thanks for making it so simple!! 🧶
That is literally the most beautiful color of yarn I think I’ve ever seen 😍 Always come here to cast off because I always forget what to do with the last loop 😂
Yea, I let the needle slip out cuz I was confused, but I had to pull the yarn thru the 2 unraveled spots.
Thanks so much! I just made a small square using the knit stitch technique. I am 11 and I have been interested in knitting recently because my mom is knitting. I watched your tutorials that were very clear and step by step.
Thanks so much for your tutorials. I've been using your how to knit playlist to learn the basics. You make it so easy. I'm starting knitting as a hobby and as a way to alleviate my anxiety. My mom started teaching me how to knit and also needed a refresher 😅 We found your channel and it was the closest to how my grandma used to do it. Simple and effective! Thank you 💕💕 I hope I can improve my skills and move on to more complex projects
It had been years since knitting and I had forgotten how to cast off. I’m Just a beginner. Thanks for the refresher.
A beginner with YEARS of experience?
@@mizzyly5759 They haven't knitted in years, not they've been knitting for years
Thank you Thank you Thank you! You just helped me finish off my scarf and I didn't know how to bind off right. Very easy method to use.
The best, concise, yet thorough demonstration on how to cast off. Finally finished my project. Thanks so much!
Yay! One granny square down- 149 left to go!
I can’t tell you how helpful this was, I was sat next to my dad and when I tied it off he got excited
did the ending bit and watched my project fall apart, so thanks for that
I wonder why that happened. It shouldn't have fallen apart
Me: Peacefully learning how to cast off
My Siblings in the Background: AHHHHHH MOM SHE HIT ME! OWWWWWWWWWW! MOM! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Me: I can't anymore
In the end I finished the cast off and am now happily making a quilt
I watched so many videos before finding yours and yours is the only one that actually helped me do it! Watched the whole series and I feel like within the past hour I’ve gotten more done with my project than 2 weeks.
SO HELPFUL. i finally finished the scarf i started over 2 yrs ago thanks to this video
Crochet is more easier then knitting on needles,
I love crocheting 😍 but I a also want to learn about needles, I'll try this 👍
You are amazing thank you so much🥰🥰
Thank you! Glad you enjoy!
It is so hard OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please make it slowly so I can learn I am a beginner here so #peaceoutyall
From cast on, knit, pearl, cast off!! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you a million times over!! I'm headed to your website to learn more stitches!!
I am so new to knitting. Done two little mini scarves for my plushies and making a big one for myself. Come back to this video every time! Thank you 🥰
This was so helpful , I was finally able to cast off a 5 year in the making scarf lol.
Lol, I casted off for my dead grandma! Rip
Thank you for this you helpful lovly lady may god bless you
Well, thank you very much! I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Yes
Thanks Sheep & Stitch, I learnt knitting and completed my first scarf in 70 days..I started with the seed stitch cos it felt cute to me❤️❤️
I have to say. Thank you Sheep & Stich for some reason you videos are the first videos I could under stand and I was able to make a full Scarf that is over 6 feet longs.... It was all to master the basics first of knit then of pearl then I finally finished with a proper cast off. I am happwu with what I have made.
I find that when I do this it’s always tighter at the casted off end than the other end . . Am I doing something wrong?
Her: It looks so cute!
Me: . . . mine doesn't.
Thanks a lot for your valuable teaching.l used to knit many years back. Now I started a throw, forgotten to finish that. Now I got it from your video. Thanks again
🙏
The edge of my niece's blanket came undone and your easy to follow instructions helped this newbie knitter save it. Thank you!!
so with that last tail, do you just tighten it and cut it off?
Just watched this & for the first time ever I have been able to cast off , am now 50 😂
Thank you so much!! I just started knitting yesterday, and i finished my scarf and was concerned I wouldn’t be able to cast off but this video helped a lot!! Thank you!! ❤️❤️
I have never been a great knitter, but I left it behind several years ago. I am picking it up again. Your videos are excellent and bringing my old knitting brain cells to the surface. They are so detailed and easy to follow, I think a total beginner would have an easier time with your videos. Thank you!
DEFINITELY could’ve been a bit more specific on that last part.
Am I the only one who completely messed up on the last part? As soon as I pulled it through and off the hook, the whole thing unravelled and now several hours of work is just gone😭
So much more helpful it’s so difficult finding a knitting tutorial that’s slow for newbies, I really needed this and was worried I’d have to slow down a video. But I loved that it went slow enough for me to focus and that it repeated the motions too it was great and very helpful 1000/10 would absolutely recommend if someone needed it
hello hello, I just wanted to say Thank you Davina. Your videos for the beginners literally helped me all the way through. I have made a hat and the matching scarf. Literally just basic Knit Stitch for now. My next project will be teaching myself with the Purl Stitch whooopp whooop 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Thank you!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹
I have one question, can you cut of both tails or not? Will it undo?
It’s best to weave in the tail using a tapestry needle to ensure that it doesn’t unravel.
I love love love your channel! I am finishing my little daughters first sweater and I never would have made it to the end without you and your awesome videos! Thank you so much!
Thank you ! I have not done the casting off in years so I needed a refresher. Your tutorial was perfect !
I get so stressed out at this point lol
Same lol
I messes up my cast off stitch thing. I have to restart the whole thing
I tied up one side (the end) because it was ruined s I had to do the other side to make it look a little more natural.
Your sentence does not make sense

You’re very welcome!
It looks like a lil patch of raw ground beef tehe
You went to fast at the end
Best tutorial ever ❤️❤️❤️ I love the way you make the video short but enough all the information that everyone need, very easy to follow. Thank you so much for your video ❤️❤️❤️
I just want to thank you so much because I've seen your videos and I've learned how to knit and I'm just so thankful
The music is distracting. You don’t need it.
Actually, I barely noticed it.
Me too
Thank you so much. I started a scarf a month ago & now finally finished it, with your easy to follow video. 🦋🌺🎯👍
The best video on this I have seen. Very clear and helpful. I got a large ball of yarn from Happy Dragon in Los Gatos and just finished a scarf. A note for you. You need about three widths of your scarf to have enough to cast off. That's because of the "Pi" factor. You are making small circles when you knit. Enjoy!
So useful! Every time I attempt to take up knitting again I come back to your videos. Thank you! ❤
very clear language and demonstration!!! I'm looking up more as soon as I finish this scarf. great video, thanks for the help.
i started knitting a little bag yesterday after not knitting for an entire year, thanks for bringing back how to cast off
I bumped into your tutorials as a truly novice. Your step by step is so detailed and well explained compared to many that I've watched. Thank you Delvina ❤
Thank you for this great video I just I finished knitting a scarf and I forgot how to end it off so I watched you and now I know how to do it thank you so much my late mom taught me how to make God bless her heart love from Canada happy Sunday ❤️🇨🇦🙏😘
as someone who hasn't knit in over a decade, your videos have been super helpful for making a scarf for my friend!! now to weave the ends in and add the fringe and i'm done!!
