"Mystery box" isn't a storytelling technique, it's a marketing technique.
That is a damned interesting point. That makes a lot of sense actually. So would the whole point of mystery box be to just suck the unwary into a story that they don't have a resolution for?
Its a shitbox. He can't open it not because of he is excited about the mysteries but deep down he knows that its full of shit. Plus its pretty lazy. "Hehe I won't tell you the story but here is your cgi action scene instead and you fill the gaps sorry"
The mystery in JJ's box is nepotism.
It is ok to have a story with maybe one mystery box which never gets revealed, like say, the contents of Marsellus Wallace's briefcase. But you can't tell a story filled with like 20 mystery boxes and none get revealed.
I totally agree. In pulp fiction the point of the story isn't for the audience to find out what is in the briefcase, that's why that mysterbox works. Whereas the mystery boxes JJ uses are the story
Because the briefcases contents aren’t that important it’s the character arcs of them getting the briefcase to Wallace not the case itself.
One Piece be like:
the difference is that Tarantino just uses those mcguffins as an excuse to provide the story a starting point, JJ uses a freakin mistery box one scene after another one without any intention to put pieces together and end up with a conclussion or anything close to an arc, just a bunch of actions happening without a purpose
He embodies the trope Fan-Disliked Explanation to a fault, for if he manages to answer the questions posed by his own mystery boxes, he doesn't give a satisfying answer....like at all. See Cloverfield Paradox and Rise of Skywalker to understand.
J J ABRAMS THE DESTROYER OF FRANCHISES
The box is empty and the answer sucks
Haha very true
Lost and Rise of Skywalker, eh?
WHAT'S IN THE BOX???
Cue the scene from Seven.
It’s a good idea if used only as a resource, not as a substitute for an actual story.
You still need to create a story, with plot, good characters, an interesting and consistent world, etc.
If the only thing you have is the box, you’re a hack.
I feel like the biggest issue is that he writes the stories in such ways that it feels like He doesnt know whats in the box either !
I thought it said "JJ is bad at writting"
both are true
The funny thing about the Mystery Box is that Tarantino's been using it long before JJ has and has done it properly.
What happened to Mr. Pink? What was in the briefcase? Did Cliff really kill his wife?
So here's a question then: Is the mystery box a bad plot device, or does it depend on the filmmaker who's using it?
As I understand it, JJ did have outlines for 8, but Rian ignored them because he had started writing TLJ while TFA was being filmed, and apparently he only wrote one draft of the script with no one looking over it.
I will never forgive JJ Abrams for ruining Lost
lost was perfect. hush.
Great frigging essay!
The tracks in this video are very good. Does anyone can tell their names?
This video deserves more views
The production value of this video is just great tbh, can really tell how much love you put into the editing, graphics and so on
Good job man
A well edited and written video essay with only a few hundred views? Rare. Nice vid man.
Chekhov's gun. If you look like you're setting something up, you better fucking do something interesting and substantial with that concept. Otherwise, you're just wasting time at best, and lying to your audience at worst.
A good mystery is theoretically solvable on your first read. A good mystery should make a second viewing MORE ENGAGING because you start noticing all the hints that were right under your nose the entire time.
Essentially, Abrams is a lazy writer who doesn't want to put work into his stories. No wonder his movies are disappointing.
His theory of the box is simular to the fysical box. He can show you his box and tell you it's a mystery but he has never cracked it open.
Edit: damn now i feel like a fucking moron, guess i should have watched the next 3 minutes cus you fucking brought it up
Just watch the next 3 minutes of the video dude!
Edit: Oh fuck.

geiler typ!
You know, you could just put the box through an x-ray machine to see what's inside. That's how flimsy and shitty his premise is; a simple solution destroys it entirely. That's why _actual_ good mysteries involving planning and foresight, not selling you BS and hoping your imagination does the rest. We all learned that the hard way after LOST ended.
When Lost first premiered I was instantly hostile to it and knew, from the core of my being, that they didn't have a solution to the mystery boxes JJ and his ilk were seeding and the show would go on long enough for everyone to be disappointed by it. I had friends who were huge fans of Lost and they didn't like what I said about it and to be fair I was pretty harsh. However, I was right. The reason I was right had nothing to do with the individual story elements of lost itself and everything to do with my own disenchantment. My disenchantment came from what I still consider the greatest science fiction TV show ever realized (and I say this as a massive Whovian and Trekkie): The X-Files. The X-Files was amazing but they had one serious problem that emerged over the course of the show: They had too many plot threads and had seeded to many contradictory story elements. As such, when it came time to end the show and write a concise conclusion, they couldn't do it. Watching it unfold as a young man of 15 I realized they couldn't end the show properly, and as such the show ended with a dissatisfying finale. What happened after that was I re-watched the entire series on DVD (still have them) from start to finish and learned the warning signs for when they have a cool concept but don't have an ending. This has lasted me ever since and it's the reason I despise JJ Abrams with a passion. Because this is all he's capable of, and it bugs me because so many people can't see that the man can't tell a proper story, he can only smear mystery box everywhere. My friends who were so unhappy with how Lost ended were eager to see his Star Trek. My friends who weren't pleased with his "reimagining" of Star Trek were willing to see what he did with Star Wars. It's just frustrating.
great intro

Mystery box is a similar thing which had and others directors. It's not great news
While I agree with everything you said about JJ, I still don't forgive Rian Johnson for his actions in the build up and aftermath to "The Last Jedi." He was an asshole through and through. Does anyone remember "Your Snoke Theory Sucks?"
I honestly am kinda looking forward to Rian's trilogy. I would be nice to see a trilogy that's made from the mind of one person, and not the hot potato of this one.
You also can't fully excuse Ryan Johnson, because he too, just like Abrams, was a corporate pawn and a Kathleen Kennedy yes man. After The Las Jedi got panned by the fans, he continued to provoke and insult them on social media for years, while he should've stayed silent. To his day, this hack is convinced that made an amazing Star Wars film. He's completely dellusional.
Rian Johnson only took it against the people who deserve it, pretty much like the Knives Out movies were he mocks people. And honestly the only thing that hurt Johnson's movie was having to clean the complete mess that JJ Abrams did. The Force Awakens ends in a way were none of the character motivations are clear or established and wasted half the movie in a remake storyline that really didn't do anything to develop the characters, the world or anything. Basically, The Last Jedi from the get go was in the impossible position of having to explain the previous movie while also having to have it's own plot and also explain itself.
